Blog 'newyork' » MTA Under Fire For Not Spending $391 Million Slated For Security

MARCH 18TH, 2005

As the Metropolitan Transportation Authority demands more funding to keep trains moving, officials admitted Friday they still haven't spent the money they have to secure the subway system more than three years after September 11th.

“This takes time, because this is not money that you want to willy-nilly spend,” said MTA spokesman Tom Kelly.

Shortly after the terrorist attacks, MTA officials found they needed to invest $1 billion on new security measures. So, the state allocated $591 million to the MTA budget, including $143 million in federal funds. But so far very little of the money has been spent.

Not surprised

Just another example of that the MTA doesn't know what it's doing.

Yup

Take this statement for example:
“This takes time, because this is not money that you want to willy-nilly spend,” said MTA spokesman Tom Kelly.

So they're admitting that they normally spend their funds on foolishly.

Re: Yup

Doesn't sound like they're admitting anything

"This takes time....." is nothing but an excuse

Everything takes time, the thing you have to do is use the minimum of it to accomplish the program you you have allocated monies for.

Money was allocated for security enhancements right after 9/11, and they are just now saying that they will spend 200 million - but have no idea where the rest should go????

And I think one of the original reasons that they needed to increase the fares was that 'increased security was needed'. And they had money coming from the state/federal goverment specifically for this already.WTF?

Re: Yup

Tell me about it.

I take the LIRR & about this time last year my monthly was $135 - now it's $178.

And I read a report in Newsday a couple weeks ago that because of a 'accounting error' that they made, they might have to raise the fares again.
