MTV Makes Content Available For Embedding
Changing styles for a changing web
by KathrynV Sunday 25-Feb-2007 tags: Video · alternatives · content
Viacom’s deal with Joost for making video content online may be a big deal but it’s not the only thing that’s going on over at MTV Networks, owner of Viacom. The company has recently announced that it will be allowing other websites to embed video clips from its various sites, including MTV.com, VH1.com, Comedycentral.com and BET.com (New York Times). MTV has always kept their content under strict lock and key, but is looking at making the switch to increasing its availability in recognition of the changing world of Web 2.0.

viacom owner of MTV Networks?

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't viacom own MTV Networks?

I can't wait for joost to come out. I have been waiting for a token or invite from them for a while now as I am on the waiting list. From what i hear from people here joost is just short 3 minute clips right now. In the meantime I will enjoy my Slingbox tuner.

No, you are apparently right, it looks like Viacom bought up all the MTV's in the world that they could.

What? WHAT??!!

MTV has music videos? When did this happen? Last I heard from a band manager friend of mine(Managed bands like RATM), he had heard from an MTV Senior Vice President that MTV was no longer "about music". They were now "about lifestyle. We are moving away from music". If that's the case, what does the "M" mean? I would entertain any suggestions posted here.

I have yet to figure out how to get lifestyle into a CD player, and I am pretty good at that there technamical stuff, too.

Are you kidding? MTV2 used to be where MTV would show music videos (apparently, they felt the need for a music station to appease those of us who remember when MTV was a music station). But, even that's now heading in the direction of "lifestyle" crap.

VH1 used to be where they would show videos for the Celine Dion lovers. Now... Well, they've got some good music history shows. But, mostly, it's the "best week ever" type of crap.

About the only reliable place for seeing broadcast music videos is Fuse.

something tells me that MTV2 and MTVU and all their subdivisions are just going to become like MTV and pushing everything away from the real meaning of the network: music.
Not to mention more places to put more ads and crap

Absolutely. Think: Product placement taken to its damn-near illogical extremes.

If the RIAA wants to know why their sales are down, they need look no father than MTV.

Oh, one more thing: Out of the thousands of "records" that are released each year, in the US, only approx. 150 get any meaningful airplay in the US, and far less get in rotation on MTV. One reason why is that the budget isn't there to put those artists on MTV.

Yup, you want to get in any tier of rotation there, you better anti up the really large. They used to call that "payola". Now, they call that an economic model.

i have to agree with you on that. MTV is most definitely about "lifestyles" now. To be honest, theres no money in running music videos all day. All the ads that MTV would be able to run would be the commercial segments during "music" breaks, and there's no money in that. When you watch Pimp My Ride or any other show on MTV, its all sponsored by one or another company...hence how the major TV companies make their profit--Embedding their ads in our daily life.

Theaves and scoundrles.

They are bringing TV into peoples homes over wires and are not paying franchise fees.

They are going to clog my *tubes* with rock'n roll.
