MTV Puts All Videos Online -- But Censors P2P References?
Must...not....reference...KaZaA....
MTV this week put nearly every single music video they've ever aired online, which is a nice trip down memory lane for those of us who grew up with MTV. Interestingly though, Techdirt notes how the channel censored out the names of popular file sharing sites from a Weird Al Yankovic video. While the music industry has been inadvertently advertising these services for years via a very public legal assault, allowing them to be named in a music video crosses the line? Unless the move was either a joke or publicity stunt?

Videos?

What I find interesting is that someone at MTV has worked there long enough to realize that they used to show music videos.

I was going to say "that was like what, 10 videos?" But sadly I too am old enough to remember when they played videos.

They don't show videos anymore? I don't watch it anymore, but I do remember when they first aired "Video Killed the Radio Star"

Re: Videos?

MTV is now nothing more than a "trailer" channel for selling RIAA records and a wannabe E network (which is owned by Comcast, not Viacom).

I remember those days, when there was a number of tv channels that actually played music videos. Are there any left?

VH-1 used to show many more videos, but now not so much. MTV2 I thought showed videos, but I've been seeing a lot of reality/cartoon programming on there as well.

Sometimes the truth hurts.

I love the idea that they put the videos online. I just wish they continued to show videos on MTV. It seems that they only show reality shows, or cartoons. Not to say that those shows are good or bad (I happen to love Jackass and Viva la Bam), but I do miss the videos.

80s

When I was a teenager in the 80s MTV was the pinnacle of coolness--Yo MTV rap, Headbanger's ball, etc. Now, all MTV shows are just middle and upper class young adults fighting with each other and complaining.

I guess they had to put the music somewhere or be forced to change their name to the crybaby channel or something.

Not so much really just replace the word Music with Media. Either way you end up with MTV and IMO that's what they're doing.

Didn't help that most popular music went in the crapper in the late 90's/early 00's, what with Brittney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, and all of those other ones I've managed to purge from memory with a mixture of pot and alcohol. Anything that wasn't too offensive for television sucked. The decline was inevitable.

VH1 and VH1 classics.. Then there is always Youtube. When MTV started dumping music for the "x-generation" soaps, well, to be honest, when they started playing mostly hippity hop and rap, I deleted that channel from my line up (Yo.. mtv, you listening). The turned their backs on a generation who made them what they are so, I don't watch'em my kids don't watch'em. Thank god to youtube.. Oh, and VH1C

That's MTV for you. They've sucked since about the late 90s
or so. Now they're just a propaganda arm of the RIAAtards.

Copyrights?

Could Kazaa be a registered copyright? MTV may be trying to avoid tempting lawsuits against an organization heavily antagonized by the RIAA by not broadcasting what could potentially be construed as a copyright violation.

Weird Al did this as a parody so he can say it all he wants. MTV is just trying to not give kids any ideas.

so in other words, they don't want to give kids ideas that they could be sued for? seems to fall in line with today's fear of getting sued by some schmuck or offending some idiot.

Were they censored on tv?

Were they censored when they aired on TV? Though, does MTV still even play videos? I mean last time I saw MTV they still did overnight, but it's been some time since I've seen MTV.

An editor has to do it. It was probably done on the source video file.

FNMTV is the closest you find to music videos. Overnight block is dead unless they air FNMTV, which is their cheap replacement for expensive TRL. FNMTV has slightly longer videos, but still "trailer" length, and no studio audience.

Re: Were they censored on tv?

Figures... They should just rename it "Reality" Television, since there's no music on Music Television apparently anymore. Yeah... I don't have cable, and even when I did MTV was not in my scan list, so I haven't watched the network in years.

YAY!

We can finally watch music videos!

I think the real issue with MTV is that interest in music videos peaked around the year 2000. And now no one cares.

Errors - Videos that don't play and failure to Alphabetise

Whats up with all the videos that are listed but seemingly never load and play. Not to mention they must have gotten so fatigued with setting this site up that they stopped putting videos in Alphabetical order. The Artists listed under the S category is the best example scroll all the way through.

When is "evey single video" not quite it?

Apparently, it's not every single video they ever played. I just looked up several artists (XTC, The Specials, Madness) and no deal. So I don't believe the hype.

MTV bleeping what sponsors want them to, not new

Ever since hordes of kids in the early 90s believed that Humpty Hump sang about "I once got busy in a fuck-ing bathroom", MTV has been known for its really weird, really pandering broad censorship of ridiculous things. Usually these are things that compete or conflict with either their sponsors or their other corporate ties.

MTV is irrelevant

I see MTV never ceases to keep redefining irrelevance, but then I suppose that is to be expected since they are the propaganda arm of what someone else said, the RIAAtards . Good one, BTW.

This isn't new news

When he very first put this video out places it was hosted like AOL and a few others had a version that had the file sharing sites censored out. Only the one on his web site or his youtube was uncensored. Who knows if he did it as a publicity thing or just to make it ironic. It's Weird Al, he does humor.

epic failure

Soundgarden - no "Black Hole Sun?" No "uncencored" version of "Pretty Noose" either.

Beck - no "Loser"

And who cares if a Weird Al song mentions these things?

He even made that song available for free and WANTED people to download it (using said bleeped out programs?)!

What a crock. Even Yahoo videos had more selection, better quality, and I doubt they'd censor Weird Al of all people...
Then there's youtube, of course, who got sued by Viacom (owns MTV)... which is the dumbest thing they could've done. Nobody cared that youtube had a frakton of video from all over the place

MTV should just give up. They don't care about music anymore (if they ever really did..), and I don't care about them. Nobody I know actually watches any MTV.
