story category Macbook Air Sets Stage For Generation of Smaller Computers
But its flaws continue to cause mixed reviews
(old news - 12:06PM Sunday Feb 03 2008)
tags: hardware · Mac
Despite reports of numerous problems with the Macbook Air, sales were high when the new notebook was released this week; it sold out of stock within minutes of hitting San Francisco shelves. As was to be expected, reviews were mixed with some people loving the ultrathin computer and others irritated by the aforementioned problems.

However, the general consensus seems to be that despite flaws, it does “break new ground” for a forthcoming generation of smaller laptops. This seems to hold true with announcements that Intel will be marketing the chip designed for the Macbook Air to PC makers interested in creating their own smaller notebooks.

Readers in our forums have pointed out that misconceptions about the true purpose of the Macbook Air could be what’s led to the disappointment of some people.

What misconceptions?

I hear this as an argument and roll my eyes. Unless someone buys this sight unseen, what is so confusing about the product? The link to the forum topic that discusses this is as ridiculous a strawman as I've read in sometime. The basis for teh thesis is that anyone who voices an opinion contrary to sucking on the damn thing is too damn stupid to understand its intended market.

MBAs for MBAs. Fools and their money. Yada, yada, yada.

Re: What misconceptions?

People are foaming to see Apple fall on its face. People who have never used their computers, people who for some reason loathe the iPod, people who hate the concept of the iPhone. Some people far too concerned about what other people do with their money.

Yeah, it's an ultra-light ultra-portable computer that is the first to address what I've been pissing and moaning about when it comes to portables -- they're getting heavier and the battery life sucks.

Am I going to buy one? Hell no. But I might buy a follow-up from a competitor (or even Apple) if it meets my price point and suits my needs. This pushes those who are already in this market a little harder.

Relax people, it's just a freakin' computer. And if Apple users get under your skin, you need to work on your self-esteem issues.

Believe me, I know it's just "a freakin' computer." It isn't Apple users that get under my skin, it's elitism conflated with idiocy. Neither of which have anything to do with self esteem if one finds either objectionable. The strawmen just keep coming . . .

But the problem is it's being marketed on it's looks and not for what it is, a niche system. It would be like putting Soekris hardware in an Alienware case and advertising it like it's a gaming machine. I don't think that's necessarily bad as long as they're forthcoming with the specs, but it could backfire on them as some of the annoyances could turn off a good number of people that purchase them out of ignorance.

Not Really

The Macbook air is not small, its just thin.
13.1 is not even close to the smallest laptop.

Even the OLPC pc beats the Macbook air.
The eepc and any laptop that is 12.1" or smaller are true traveler laptops.
My Dell 700m is much smaller than the Macbook air.

Apple is doing it wrong. Thin is not really a benefit, its a smaller profile with more features that is the benefit.

If there are people who just want a dummy internet browser that uses wifi only then the Macbook air has found a market, otherwise I have no idea who would use it.

To say that the Macbook air sets the stage for smaller computers is just insane. They made a thin computer, not a smaller computer. The stage has already been set and the MBA is apples failed attempt to make a small laptop.

Re: Not Really

So people want heavy portable computers with tiny screens for travelling? I really doubt that.

Going by your criteria a perfect cube would be the ultimate "small" computer. heh

The targeted market doesn't want to sacrifice screen size, they want something light and something within the size of the other stuff they're carrying with them like file folders or even the manila envelope seen in the MBA commercial. Any 13" laptop is perfect for this so thinner wins.

Until Apple makes it, the stage isn't set with Apple loyalists and the Mainstream media. See: Every MP3 player compared to the iPod. Every touch screen capable phone compared to the iPhone. Now its every thin computer will be compared to the Macbook Air.

Apple does this because people will always compare and contrast future products. The Air is about 1-2 years too soon. The iPhone is well...crap to me with its shortcomings. iPod is the only one useful after enough refreshes hit to make it more worthwhile.

Yes, the Air is a nice thing. But its innards and price is definitely not something for me.

@verizon.net

Stop the FUD. Just stop it. Domo!

MBA is for those wanting a lighter portable mac IN ADDITION to their Mac at home. A MacBook will suffice for those that need a builtin drive for dvd watching. A MacBookPro will suffice for those that need a portable for serious work. But the Air is for those that just need email, surfing and working (where a Smartphone or PDA/iPodTouch are just too small/inconvenient).

All you Anti-Mac trolls just go spread FUD on your toast. This is about FORM over FUNCTION. Or haven't you got it yet?

Yea, cause god knows you get way more productivity on a ugly ass pc then a mac....lol.

Silly haters. Same old whinning we heard when apple stared using mice. Or when the ipod came out, or when apple did away with floppy drives, or the iphone and on and on and on.
But then again... name a company thats even 1/10th as inovative? So many great industry firsts came from apple who takes the risks and so many lost winsheep just talk shit about a great company.

You may be anon, but at least you're close. I've yet to chime in (seriously) on the reasons behind this thing. But if I were to do so, I'd look closely at how this WiFi everything (in form) approach applies to Apple's future products that are also WiFi everything and network centric in function. Apple Inc is deftly moving their product lines towards interoperability amongst each other to compel cross pollination. iTunes/iMovie/iTV/Leopard > iPod/AppleTV/Airport/Computers-Airport wireless backup.
The only piece missing is iApple iISP. iI iYi iYi

IBM has had an ultralight the x series for a long time now. but because it is apple it is trendy and expensive. The laptop doesnt even let you plug in a usb thumb drive and power plug. and there is no headphone jack as well as only one usb jack. the laptop overheats and has to shut down half the processor so it runs slower. doesnt look production ready to me.

Want truly portable - get an internet tablet

Get an iPod Touch or iPhone. Or get what I bought - a Nokia N810 or even cheaper - a Nokia N800.

I can browse the internet wherever there is WiFi; sync to a cellphone with Bluetooth and access the internet that way; use the built in GPS for map navigation; take pictures; play music and videos; and use a small slide out keyboard(or bluetooth external keyboard). And the screen is 800x480 in resolution. And it weighs 8 oz. and fits in a pocket.
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N810

Would I want to start using this for writing long documents - no. But while travelling, it does email and browsing very nicely.

Junk

this laptop is junk.. it doesn't even have a ethernet connection not to mention other things that make it useless unless your leaching off of wireless somewhere. If you ever have to have it worked on Apple will drill you hard on fee's... avoid it at all costs!

It's junk? So I guess you have one....

If you need ethernet, just get a USB dongle. no big deal.

You say it's junk just for criticisms sake.

I've never seen the thing, so I can't say if it's junk or not. I'm guessing the same thing applies to you...

This is so much better

Small, light, a stable operating system, only getting unstable when it experiences a sugar rush. The battery life is also excellent.

FYI: It's Lenovo Inside

The MacAir is actually core built by Lenovo for Apple.
In about 3-6 months (as per contract) Lenovo will come out with theirs. It will have an Ethernet connection and will also have a DVD slim drive built in.

The "MacAir" is probably built for Apple by Foxconn or another large manufacturer. I'd like to see some evidence that it's built by Lenovo. Furthermore, where did they happen to fit the DVD drive? Unless they make it thicker or there is some overnight revolution in the size of the components being used, there is no room for an optical drive with the current design.

Re: FYI: It's Lenovo Inside

Ron Paul and a Mac FanBoi...go figure.

Check the specs of the x300, then wait for the next one the x330 and x360 (or x400) depending on the date of release.

The optical drive (a dvd burner) is 7mm and there is a 4mm drive in test right now.

Now to cook you little noodle of MacFandom...check out the Lenovo original layout which predates the Mac by about a year...and glory be it's the same layout that the Mac Air is using...why? They licensed it for that little Mac.

Now ask yourself, why did Mac go Intel inside...innovation in architecture on the Intel camp.

Re: FYI: It's Lenovo Inside

Please provide proof.
If you're saying the MacBook Air is built using many of the same components of other manufacturers, fine. But I still doubt your claim that Lenovo is manufacturing laptops for Apple, primarily because you have provided no proof thus far, but also because Apple has used other system builders for previous machines.

I'll ignore your inflammatory comments in the hope that this conversation can remain civil - let's please try to stick to the topic at hand and avoid further trolling.

Re: FYI: It's Lenovo Inside

No I am saying that Lenovo designed the core structure of the MacAir (the entire schematic is Lenovo), under contract, which gives them (MAC) about 6 months to a year to get into the market. After that, Lenovo will be able to use technology that it designed, as well as now superior newer technology. In fact the x300

I have already proved you wrong once, you say that there is no DVD burner that is thin enough. The base x300 DVD burner is 7mm

The MBA runs about 4 mm to 19 mm in thickness. The Lenovo DVD burner drive is 7mm and a new one is form factor at just at 4mm. Depending on the options of the newer x3nn and x4nn they will accept the 4mm drive but hold the bay at just over 7mm to accommodate the battery (the bay is dvd/cd/bat/200GB RAM disk).

The base x300 will be pretty thin, the newer x330 and or x400 will be thiner is some respects than what is offered by the MBA now. They will offer a weight savings in the same config (by about half a pound to three quarters of a pound -depending on options). The ram drive will be 64gb base, 120 add on in the bay and then 200 add on -those numbers might change.

The processor will be low voltage, it will have GB Ethernet on the MOBO, the bay will be a PATA connection to accomodate the various swap options.

Lenovo with Intel fronting a custom CPU for APple and Fujitsu developed these new books but then pawned off the technology on the board and sub architecture to the Apple folks. Why? Because the newer Lenovos will support the Intel Montevina CPU, where as the Apple uses the Merom architecture. That being said there will be a slight permofrance loss switch up and a power difference but not a big deal for apple to switch to the Montevina.

You can Google some of this or you can wait about 6 months and then tell me how I predicted the future.

This does not "Break new Ground"

The Asus Eee PC, the XO Laptop, and Palm Foleo are what broke new ground. Apple copied the idea from these.
