VoIP competition gets a little silly
(old news - 06:31PM Wednesday Nov 05 2003)
tags: prices · VoIP
What happens when dozens of telcos, cable companies, P2P developers and even beer companies decide to rush into offering VoIP? We're about to find out. CNet reports on the recent price warfare going on in the industry, where many providers are willing to take losses in order to gobble up the most customers.

Our VoIP forum maintains a list of the current hardware-based providers. There's also an increase in the number of free providers out there, including one sponsored by Labatt's beer (see ZDNet report), and services such as Skype (see "Skype Hype"). While companies have been busy trying to undercut one another, $30-$35 a month has emerged as the industry standard, with analysts essentially in agreement that anything less isn't sustainable.

Qwest this week became the first bell to officially throw their hat in the ring, saying they'd soon be offering VoIP service in Minnesota, with other markets to follow. Since a Minnesota federal judge ruled that VoIP providers in the state don't need to adhere to telco guidelines, Qwest jumped at the chance to join the fray. They've yet to offer price details or dates, but it puts them in the odd position of having to compete with themselves for voice service.

As discussed in our VoIP forum, AT&T has been conducting a beta of their own VoIP system, which offers free service until the trial ends on February 29, 2004. Users interested in the beta can sign up at the AT&T Consumer Digital Solutions website.

The majority of cable companies are also feeling the pressure and are accelerating deployments. Time Warner is busy applying for rights to offer cable telephony services in its markets, with Comcast and Cox speeding up their own trials. Adelphia is holding off on their deployments because, as we mentioned yesterday, they've got bigger fish to fry. Users in our forums recently gave their impressions of Optimum On-lines new "Optimum Voice" service.

So you will have a choice of LaBatt's VOIP or LaBatt's VOIP lite. LaBatt's VOIP lite is less filling and LaBatt's VOIP tastes great.

Do you ever go to "Meijer'S"? What percentage of the population in the Midwest pronounces 'Meijer' correctly.

In all fairness, if a beer company can provide free VoIP, I believe that a VoIP company should provide free beer. Are you listening, Vonage?

Beer?

Beer and VoIP are they compatible?? This is shaping up to be one of life's great mysteries. I think I need to go get a beer, Homer Simpson would certainly approve.

Re: Beer?

Given the likely sound quality of Labatt's VoIP service, I'd say they'd be compatible enough that you wouldn't be able to tell that the person on the other end drank a bit too much Labatt's (or that they didn't, for that matter.)

I think that's the problem some of us see. After a time some people get sick of technical "flash in the pan's".

Selling something below a price point only serves to drive out the competition who is actually interested in investing in the future of the service, rather than the "dot-com" looking to market something quickly or other short term visions (IPO, sell to another company, buy a corvette for trophey wife # 3)

I didn't necessarily mean "silly" in a completely negative way...

As DSLKnowitall points out, I start to get shivers when I see dozens upon dozens of companies rushing to all provide the same thing, at price points they can't support, offering products that often aren't very good. Usually means some kind of ugly explosion is coming.

Labatt Blue Line

Well, I have used the Labatt Blue line »www.labattblueline.com/ for my long distance for a while ... VoIP is not THAT much of a jump.

First bell to officially offer VoIP

"Qwest this week became the first bell to officially throw their hat in the ring, ..."

Not really...

BellSouth officially offered a branded VoIP service months ago (actually it was resold Vonage under the BellSouth name)... and they were in the position of competing with themselves. They have already ceased offering the service.

Re: First bell to officially offer VoIP

Yes, I forgot about that. It was very brief, and they were re-selling Vonage service with at the same time engaging in a spat if I recall...

Yep... I remember that... I seem to recall that the disagreement was over blocks of telephone numbers that the VoIP community was wanting...

We've specificly avoided the VoIP . . .

Give it another 18 months, then maybe a mainstream product can be sucessfully implemented, untill better standards are achieved I'll stick to my Mobile.

Re: sticking to my mobile???

If this VOIP thing is really taking off, how far are we from a mobile furnished with only IP broadband services??? Legacy operators may have to stop milking the voice cow and get more serious on becoming WISPs and switch to beer Sounds déjà vu on the wired voice service going DSL and leaving the subs with real options, if I am not dreaming. Any "all IP" mobile Vendor announcement on this yet on 1X, for instance? I can see the beer logo on the mobile now along with the bottle opener feature and beer commercial ring tones.

VOIP = new Oppty

I beleive that VOIP will create a new medium for communication . But I think that only the big players who invest the most money will triumph, but as any big Goliath knows David is around the corner.

Re: VOIP = new Oppty

Sounds like an other MS thing on the horizon for the consolidation: MSN IM&VOIP. Good grief: I would rather have the mobile with the bottle opener and the beer commercial ring tones.

2004 ... and still unstable and crappy (adelphia)

thanks a lot adelphia for raising the price on my cable TV and keeping
my internet connection crappy, slow, unstable with plenty of lovely spikes, and untrustworthy.

i know cable sometimes beats out DSL ... but not in my part of town

if you live in Miami, Florida, DSL is the way to go.
ANY DSL company will outperform adelphia down here in south florida.

5 thumbs down to worthless adelphia.
