Maintaining Interest in FCC's Spectrum Auction
Waning interest could re-ignite when bidders are announced
by KathrynV Sunday 09-Mar-2008 tags: fcc · business · wireless
There was a lot of interest in the FCC’s 700 MHz spectrum auction when it first began but that interest has been waning as the auction continues to drag on. Although announcements came weeks ago that the auction might be coming to its close, bidders continue to keep the action going with single-digit bids on small areas of wireless spectrum such as those serving Minot, ND. Despite waning interest in the auction, the argument can be made that we should continue to care about who is making the bids for this spectrum. The results of the auction could change the playing field in terms of whether the mobile platform or the computer platform reigns supreme. Of course, we won’t be able to tell that until the auction has closed and the anonymity of it has come to an end. Furthermore, some people suggest that we as consumers aren’t going to see any actual post-auction changes for a long time to come. People still following the bidding changes can stay up to date at the FCC’s auction page.

Yes, from what I read, it will be 3 or 4 years before anyone is really using the spectrum just auctioned. With all the hype that the auction garnered I am sure many people think that some high speed open access national wireless broadband system was going to be the quick result.

That is probably still better than the AWS auction. At least we know the drop dead date for vacating 700MHz is February 17, 2009. With AWS it is still anybodies guess.

Just because that has to be the most (mis-)quoted line of all time...

Well obviously...

The interest is going to be higher once we know who's actually won- the anonymous nature of the bidding really hurts potential interest, though it has very good reason for being done, "mysterious company that may possible be Verizon or AT&T bidding against another mysterious company that could be Google" doesn't draw too much attention.

Re: Well obviously...

Actually, I would think the interest might wane even more around here if/when VZW and T pick up big swaths of spectrum from the auction.

Double Edged Sword

I know a lot of people hate the idea of the bigs getting hold of the spectrum, but lets face it. The little guys can't afford the R&D and advertising needed to make things work on such a large scale. The last time that worked was the old CellOne days. Remember the days that if you were unlucky enough to roam into some podunk territory and you had to pay $6.00 a minute because there was no roaming agreement across the state border.

I hate to say it, but its own (consumer) fault. We want the biggest, brightest, and fastest with the cheapest rate and then bithc because the CEO of the only company that can provide that to us makes more money than most third world countries.

My small company owns the C-block in two rural areas and I am hoping that one of the big boys bought the majority of the spectrum. Otherwise this spectrum will end up in the same file as my LMDS license...In the can.

So you leased the spectrum just to squat on it? For Shame!

Re: Double Edged Sword

No, I can't do anything with it until the famous Feb date in 2009 when TV goes all digital (interference). I am currently working with 2 vendors trying to decide which technology I am going to deploy. Technically speaking I have until 2017 to build out, but I am not going to wait until the last minute.

The trick is not to be too quick, though. I don't want to put a product in the market on day one that will limit my capabilities in year four.

I am hoping the big boys R&D pays off in the long run for little guys like me who can't afford to put Motorola or Nokia on my payroll.

Re: Double Edged Sword

Are you having interference from a local station?

We have been utilizing our C block licenses for nearly 2 years now using WaveIP gear. I still see the noise floor jump to -40 - -50 when the duction conditions are just right that brings in distant signals. We have a couple of licenses such as the one that covers Springfield MO that we cant touch because a local broadcaster is still there and they are still primary holders until the cut off date.

Re: Double Edged Sword

As you know the C block is channel 54 and 59 (I am not an engineer BTW). Channel 59 is Indianapolis' Fox station so until they pull their signal I am sitting on my hands.

I have been looking at SOMA for the cities I cover and Airspan for the more rural areas. How do you like your WaveIP product? I don't know much about them.

Right on, since a lot of stations are already transmitting, I'm sure there will be cheaper/better equipment by Feb 2009.

Good luck!
