Majority of Americans Oppose Time Warner Cable Comcast Merger
by Karl Bode 03:18PM Thursday Mar 27 2014
A Reuters/Ipsos online poll released this week indicates that the majority of Americans are skeptical of the benefits of a merger between Time Warner Cable and Comcast, and generally believe that the government isn't doing enough to keep corporate monopoly power in check. Interestingly, the degree to which people disliked the deal hinged on their education level.

"62 percent of people with a college degree or more took a negative view of the deal, but that number fell to 57 percent among people with some college experience and 42 percent among those with none," notes Reuters.

Then of course there's those who have no idea: 26 percent of those polled stated they did not know how they felt about the merger; prime candidates for Comcast claims the deal will create amazing new synergies.

If you peruse the newswires and most comments sections, you'd be hard pressed to find a news outlet or individual without financial ties to the industry with something nice to say about the deal. But with Comcast's massive lobbyist operations and a significant number of former FCC officials on the payroll, will public sentiment actually matter when it comes time for antitrust regulators to do their jobs?

Merging a GSM and a CDMA user base? I don't think either of these two monoliths want to even try to venture into that.

Verizon would be much better served absorbing Sprint.

Re: Majority of Americans Oppose Verizon ATT Merger

It wouldn't matter at this point... they are both using LTE [tm]..
It may just be as simple as updating the roaming profile / firmware update; depending if the phone chipsets supports those frequencies so they can connect to the towers of both carriers.

Re: Majority of Americans Oppose Verizon ATT Merger

The problem is the vast amount of legacy devices that make up the significant majority of both carriers networks, not to mention MVNOs and budget hardware that has no support for any of the LTE bands.

But this merger will not reduce the number of cable TV choices for any consumer.

...factual basis for their opinion, it's just the buzz they heard at the water cooler, online, from some guy, which they just repeat to the next friend the talk too.

Once upon a time the (vocal) majority thought being an English subject was fine, slavery was acceptable, women were unfit to vote, The Vietnam war was worth the cost(s) being gay was a choice etc..... doesn't mean they were right.

Given the choice of being subject to the English monarchy, or subject to the American Corporate Oligarchy, I would prefer the former.

If only there was a way to restore the American Republic ...

These "Polls" are bullshit.

The questions are usually skewed in a way that will lead the results they want. If they don't get the exact results they can monkey with them by changing the conditions.

4 out of 5 dentists who graduated on a Saturday in a facility with 7 doors, near an airport with 2 run ways facing east to west agreed that this survey was worth the money spent...

Re: These "Polls" are bullshit.

Of course it's not good. The alternative was getting sold to Charter, so we were going to have one less cable company in the market either way. Given the choice between two evils, I'd rather be sold to the slumlord that can actually afford to maintain their new empire.

The General Public STILL have a remnant of common sense!

Surprisingly there is still a thread of common sense and basic reasoning among the "Murican Sheeple".

Even the dullest citizens seem to understand that less competition is worse for the customer. Of course I can promise you that the big corporations would gladly dumb down subsequent generations through the "public fool" system even more if it is possible.

Absolutely true. Problem: TWC and Comcast don't compete with each other.

I wish we'd spend less time fighting against something that doesn't impact competition, and spend more time figuring out how to encourage real competitors like Google Fiber to enter more markets.

Re: The General Public STILL have a remnant of common sense!

Their networks may not overlap but the fewer cable companies means fewer new ideas that may cable better. Most massive companies get so bureaucratic they can't change.
The only good I could see is if Comcast starts telling the content providers what they will pay instead of the channels telling the cable companies the price is going up again.
Every other reason is bad and the mergers should end like the AT&T and T-Mobile.

They compete nationally for deals on content and other things. "Being a huge national conglomerate gives you advantages when you're negotiating with cable networks. And the bigger Comcast gets, the more leverage it will be able to exert on the networks who depend on it for distribution, and the less competitive the entire cable industry will be as a result. That's ultimately bad for customers, even if their monthly bills don't change all that much in the short-term." »nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/20···ked.html

They don't not compete locally in the traditional sense, but I know of several places where TWC-Comcast are adjacent to one another and in the same metro area (Columbus, Ohio for example).

Re: The General Public STILL have a remnant of common sense!

Out of my hind end apparently. Wow! is there, but I couldn't find Comcast. My mistake, I listened to a friend who still lives on the East side!

Used to be that TWC was on the West side and another cable company was on the East side of the city. (I know that TWC is still on the West side because relatives have it) I was told that Comcast got the East side, but it apparently was Insight which is now TWC. So I don't know where Cox is either.

Majority of Americans POLLED don't you mean?

It's majority of Americans polled.

The actual majority of Americans aren't even a customer of Comcast or Time Warner Cable, so how could it matter to the actual majority?

Majority of the Americans are Comcast customers. They have watched NBC Universal content, ads, etc.

You don't have to be a customer of either company to have an opinion (one way or the other) about the merger.
