Malaysia: Syndicate behind pirated version pre-release Windows
by teh Wednesday 03-Dec-2003
PETALING JAYA: A well established piracy network could be behind pirated copies of early versions of Microsoft’s yet-to-be-released Windows operating system currently being sold in the country.

Microsoft Malaysia corporate Attorney Jonathan Selvasegaram said popular consumer products like software, music and movies sold through illegal channels have been known to be available before official release dates. The Windows operating system in question -- codenamed Longhorn -- is only expected to be commercially released in 2006, but local pirates are already selling pre-release versions of it.

I saw someone running Longhorn in a computer shop in Ipoh.It looks very much like XP but with a a taskbar on the right of the screen? That guy was demonstrating his mp3 collection with it.

Ho hum

...all well and good, but it's not like we're unaware of the piracy problem here. The fact that pirated software is still sold openly in KL shows that it isn't a stall-under-a-tree type of shady deal, there must be some sort of backing behind it. Gotta admit, the pasar-malam type dealers have been closed, can't find them too openly elsewhere.

The point is: who produces Windows, eh? Microsoft, right? Well then, is it Microsoft Malaysia? No. So the "leak" doesn't originate here. The "syndicate" must have some sort of inside person or connection or whatever. Until they clean up their act at the source, there will always be "conduits" elsewhere willing and eager to channel the illicit copies. I don't pretend to know how widespread piracy is elsewhere in the SEA region, but people on IRC from Thailand and Phillipines (at least) assure me that pirated software is easily obtainable in their countries too.

Re: Ho hum

Oh please, any software is leaked by the overseas groups. Most of what we find here have originally being posted 1st in newsgroup. Before it spreads to irc, p2p & local pirates as well.

Re: Ho hum

That was what I was saying. Malaysia is just the place to sell. Like Thailand and Phillipines.

Who is the biggest pirate..

If all of you read BBC's news on their website yesterday, Malaysia was labelled as a hardcore pirate haven.

As if the Brits and the Yanks never used pirated stuffs, if my memory serves me right, USA is the biggest culprit of all.

By the way these days the school & college kids in US doesn't need to get pirated Windows & M$ Office due to the M$ settlement I think. The whole bunch of them are given free.

Re: Who is the biggest pirate..

Yup they don't sell pirated discs over there but that doesn't mean that they are free of software piracy. You may be surprised with what lurk in their HDDs.
