Malaysia plummets in global e-govt rankings
(old news - 04:02AM Wednesday Sep 22 2004)
PETALING JAYA: A new global study on e-government sees Malaysia plunging from No 8 to No 83 in ranking. It was a far cry from the lofty positions it held in previous years, according to Providence, Rhode Island-based Brown University's fourth annual e-government survey released last week. The country was ranked 16th in 2001 and 21st in 2002. The survey evaluated public sector websites of 198 countries on two dozen criteria, including the availability of online publications, databases, disability access, privacy security and online services.

Malaysian public sector websites rated quite well for online publications and access to databases. About 83% of local websites surveyed have online publications, while 67% provide access to databases. All local websites surveyed also have English language versions. Full article The Star

Does this ring a bell?

Hangat hangat tahi ayam ...

but to be fair to those sites that actually make an effort, how many Malaysian users have enough trust to use these sites for financial transactions or submission of confidential data.

Unless and until using mykad as a common means of online authentication becomes prevalent AND people trust that these sites are secure and managed by competent people, its unlikely that these sites will extend usability beyond just information dissemination.

Be nice though if they had a chat room applet that could serve as an alternative method of real time communication.

Since I don't fly much and when I do the company pays, I doubt I'll be using that site anytime soon.

So mind elaborating on your comment? I'm not sure whether you are saying its good or bad

Hahaha

Its about government not commercial sites. And the funny thing is some of those were frequently defaced. Which its not funny but the response of those agency's whose sites were defaced. I think I read in news that those agency stated they are not bothered if their websites are defaced since they don't rely on it. Which is a bad thing to say publicly. Then there is the updating those websites problem. Some of them haven't being update for quite awhile.
