Malaysia's new Communications Minister Lim Keng Yaik said the country's Internet services need improvement and the government would prefer that any mergers in the sector boost Web access.Internet usage ranged between 22% and 35% of Malaysia's 25 million people, according to independent surveys. A finance ministry document obtained earlier this month said the government was considering a merger of ISP services provider Jaring with and local broadband provider AtlasOne. It made no mention of a previous plan to merge Jaring with Telekom Malaysia's ISP TMNet.
Malaysia's internet services have not met public expectations, industry executives say. Service providers such as TMNet have been slow in rolling out broadband access and there have been complaints about the quality of existing services. Full article
