Advocates using USF to fund rural broadband....
(old news - 02:11PM Tuesday Jun 19 2007)
tags: competition · fcc · business
Repeating previous calls, FCC chief Kevin Martin today advocated expanding the Universal Service Fund (USF) to fund rural broadband deployment. Speaking from video link at the NXTcomm trade show, Martin mirrored incumbent telephone provider positions on topics such as deregulation, franchise reform and network neutrality, while lauding FCC broadband policies as "a success."

no surprise

Has there ever been a politician who described his policies as a failure?

A very good, and in this case quite accurate point.

Yes. Huge!

Just like the war on drugs!

Down with hippies!...and those who want fairness and competition! ...but mostly hippies!

This guy should try to not open his mouth so much, because he rarely makes any sense.

There already is a war on education, look at the graduation rates.

Edit: Well there is money going somewhere now. My services total $80, but my actual telco bill is $116, so go figure if anyone is eating my pie. Now they want more.

Yes, when I look at my cell phone rates, it always annoys me that the USF is getting 11.7% tacked on to my bill (this qtr -it chgs qtrly). That is a ridiculous tax rate. And most of that money is wasted and does nothing but pay off local pols pushing their special projects.

We're certainly spending money on it like it's a war. Funny how the more we spend the worse it gets...

In other news...

In other news, Kevin Martin's home was raided today by the DEA, on a hunch by the director of the DEA after seeing Martin's last three press conferences.

The raid was "hugely successful. We haven't found this much crack, ever, not even in Columbia!" said a DEA agent who was involved in the raid, who spoke on condition of anonymity. It is believed that Martin had no intention of selling or distributing the product, rather that he planned to "sling the biggest crack rock this side of Aquarius before going out in a blaze of glory!" according to a note taped to Martin's refrigerator.

When asked how he was tipped off, the director simply stated: "Have you seen this a***ole lately? There's no way he's thinking clearly! And look at those bloodshot eyes! My God, I'm surprised no one picked this up before now! I mean, come on now, do you really think anyone in the US has true broadband competition? When I have my choice of Fios, Cablevision, Comcast or Lightspeed, all without moving, then we'll talk!!" The director finished off his press conference by whipping out two six-shooters and firing wildly into the air and screaming and hooting loudly several times.

actually, Martin wants to run for congressman from NC or something like that - that takes lots of campaign contributions, if you know what I mean (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

when he is tired of damaging the nation from that position, he will take the big-bucks telco job.

oooohhhhh noooooooo

broadband in the U.S. is so screwed.

i can't wait to see the fraud, waste and abuse we currently have in the USF transferred over to broadband deployments.

i wonder if we'll get 768K/128K service for $100/mo? That's to the provider, of course; customer will only pay $15 or something, USF pays the rest.

BOHICA

Why do I have the nagging feeling we are all going to be asked to bend over and pay for this? I live in a suburban area. I wish the government would subsidize MY broadband not to mention my telephone.

I am 100% against this expansion if and until they straighten out what they have already. With all of the reports of graft and vendor overbilling, the last thing we need to do is pump even more money into these providers.

Re: BOHICA

This might be nice if it was managed enough that it actually did some good. But its another government budgeted task that will end up costing every taxpayer 10 bucks a month so 5 people can get broadband.

From the Dpt of Irony

This just in: The FCC was told that tracking broadband penetration stats is harmful to the industry so let's just go ahead and raise the USF fee so we can be further assured that the FCC has its collective head up its collective ass.

What color is the sky in Martin's World?

"We need to make sure we're doing all we can to facilitate video competition. It's also key to broadband deployment," Martin said. "The local franchising process might have been inhibiting companies from making investments. We need to have additional competition on the video side."

Geez, if he thinks local franchising is the only thing keeping other video providers out, I wonder what the color is of the sky in his world....

I'd like to interview him in a few years when cable rates still are running high and find out what the new excuse will be...
