Massive Comcast Lobbying Army Pushing NBC Deal Approval
Including 78 former government employees...

The Governors of three large states are urging federal regulators to approve Comcast's planned acquisition of a controlling stake in NBC Universal for $13.75 billion. In a letter to the FCC, Governors David Paterson of New York, Arnold Schwarzenegger of California and Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania say that "the significant benefits associated with the creation of this new joint venture far outweigh any potential harms."

Comcast has also been busily snapping up ex-politicians to help carry their water, and there's currently 78 former government employees registered as Comcast lobbyists working to push the deal through (in addition to all the other lobbyists, PR firms, consultants, trade associations, think tanks and other hired policy vessels). Says Politico:

In all, 78 former government employees registered as Comcast lobbyists in the final quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010, according to an analysis by the Investigative Reporting Workshop. The most common background among those identified in the workshop investigation is congressional staff, but there also are four former members of Congress: Reps. Robert Walker (R-Pa.), who is referred to as "Congressman Walker" on his firm’s website; William Gray (D-Pa.); Chip Pickering (R-Miss.); and former Sen. Don Nickles (R-Okla.). . . 54 former government workers list the Comcast/NBC deal as a specific lobbying issue on their disclosure forms, while 14 describe their activity ambiguously enough that it could include the merger.

Also working for Comcast now are former aides to Democratic FCC Commissioners Copps and Adelstein. Obviously a revolving door between regulators and lobbying is nothing new, but this is a particularly massive operation. Of course consumer advocates and others continue to argue that such a massive corporation controlling both pipe and content can only end badly for consumers and others in the content delivery chain.

Still, is there anyone willing to bet on this deal not getting approved?

LOL pic of Arnold as Rambo

But the prior to elected Arnold is now the wimp Ahnold:

But back on topic:
Comcast has also hired former aides to current and past FCC Commissioners:
At the FCC, Commissioner Michael Copps and former Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein have been the most visible and vocal opponents of relaxing limits on media ownership.

Comcast has hired two of their former aides: Jordan Goldstein, who worked for Copps, and Rudy Brioche, who worked for Adelstein.

Blame Congress

Lobbyists would all be out of a job if members of Congress were not making themselves available for sale.

It's called campaign financing. Make federal campaigns publicly financed and eliminate the majority of the corruption money in Washington.

We will be screwed. Copyright owners will now own the biggest broadband pipe. Say goodbye to the Hulu, piratebay, etc you know today

Re: comcast merger

Screwed and Piratebay in the same post.. hah! I love it.

From their site "Download and share anything you want anytime you want. We provide you access to the fastest and most reliable file-trading networks online."

What they're saying is "screw owner's rights... do it anyway"...

Oh, and the sky is falling.

Legitimate content is and always has been "for sale"... the stuff that people want to "pirate" and get for free may not be capable of being free or stolen.. boohoo.

Pirates everywhere will collectively cry.

Re: comcast merger

No... but I live by the law.. and if the laws are that YOU don't have the right to distribute SOMEONE ELSE'S CONTENT, then that's what I go with.

You don't like the way things are.. get off your computer, and go change them.

I'm sure it can be said that SLD, never met a law he didn't decide on his own to respect or not.. huh?

There are CLEARLY legal limits on what can and can't be distributed by people, yet Piratebay CLEARLY says "share ANYTHING YOU WANT"... so, I guess I can share a full ISO of Windows 7 if I want? I can go record the last Superbowl and share the entire event, IF I WANT? I suppose that's okay, huh?

...and you post what you THINK i believe.... funny.

The copyright argument aside, it could also be potentially dangerous, if not inevitable to the free, uncensored flow of other information, such as news. We already know that network news channels are watered down, focus on largely unimportant, non-events such as celebrities cheating on each other.

There has been heavy erosion of true, investigative journalism and integrity and I attribute a lot of that to the corporate take-over and consolidation of multiple channels of media. This consolidation would be (and probably WILL be) used as a great propaganda tool for the United States of Corporations.

That's what concerns me most, not so much any copyright infringement issues. I have no problem with people getting paid what they are owed for the material they produce.

As a DirecTV customer I do not like the idea of Comcast owning some major channels. Comcast and DirecTV got in a fight over pricing for the Vs channel and it was offline for a couple months for DirecTV customers. I do not know if conflict of interest is the right term but I do not want a major content provider like Comcast also owning the content. Comcast owning NBC Universal would make them extremely powerful.

But if Comcast promises to fire Jeff Zucker I may be able to change my mind about the merger.

Re: comcast merger

so it seems like the merger is a bad deal for consumers. I wonder what they are not telling us?

If they have so much money they should lower prices

If they can truly afford to buy NBC Universal, they can definitely afford to drop prices, or at the very least invest in their infrastructure to improve the quality of their ALL services massively, maybe even improve their customer service along the way.

Negro Please

"the significant benefits associated with the creation of this new joint venture far outweigh any potential harms." Ummm that would be benefits to the company and almost none to the customer. Hopefully this will be as successful as the AOL/Time Warner merger. Here is to new technology to come killing the blood sucking monopolies. here here!

not me

@comcast.net

What are the significant benefits?

I'm not totally against the purchase if there really are significant benefits to having Comcast purchase NBC Universal. However, I'm not seeing any benefits that would result from Comcast owning NBC Universal. Has anyone seen a description of what these supposed benefits are?

G Tinker

@65.202.26.x

Re: What are the significant benefits?

The significant benefits accrue to Comcast NBC Universal: greater span of control over the market, asserting control from production through distribution, preferential treatment options on video and internet distributions channels for their content, potential to degrade production and delivery of other producers / distributors content, reducing choices by limiting the market - your typical monopolistic stuff, nothing new. Must be HUGE sums of money at stake to throw this many buckets of money carried by this many lobbyists at the Congress. Taken to the logical conclusion, the video market starts to look a lot like the present cellular phone business.

have conditions with teeth

Make NBCast get rid of msnbc, weather channel, cnbc and usa.
Also make NBCast offer local content on a sub-channel and make NBCast offer 1 government,1 educational and 1 local access channel in every area they serve.
This won't happen as big money has our government whipped.

At least ask that NBCast provide one local access/bulletin board channel per area served.
