Says presidential candidate pandered to telecom lobbyist....

Political gossip hound Matt Drudge is raking the muck this afternoon by reporting that Presidential candidate John McCain is trying to squash a NY Times story. That story apparently involves McCain giving preferential treatment to an as-yet-unnamed telecom lobbyist who was trying to get certain legislation passed.
Click for full size
Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist! McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee.
McCain, who has spent 20 years in the Senate, has spent ample time on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, overseeing new technology laws. McCain tried to kill line sharing before the FCC effectively did it for him, has loudly supported the "a la carte" TV pricing model and has fought against network neutrality laws, arguing that "when you control the pipe you should be able to get profit from your investment."

McCain denies giving anyone unfair treatement, telling the Associated Press "I do find the timing of this whole issue very interesting." There's not much more to say until the Times report surfaces (if it surfaces) but we're sure you're as shocked as we are at the mere possibility that telecom companies have any control over the nation's government.

Update: More at the Washington Post.

Juan McCain Trying to Save Himself

Juan McCain knows that being in a fight with the New York Times over any matter whatsoever will help to endear his candidacy to conservatives who hate the New York Times.

The only problem is, his record on the issues turns off many primary voters, regardless of what the polls say. He's running the same campaign that he did in 2000, only worse, and he will have the same result.

Re: Juan McCain Trying to Save Himself

There's no one close to the calliber of #43 running on either ticket. McCain will lose to a better candidate this time..

In fact it will probably be a long time before you see another presidential candidate who has failed at everything he's attempted in his life. At least he's kept his track record in tact..

If you are referring to Bush, then we need to ask the question, why is Mrs. Bill Clinton running on the promise to fix the same things her husband promised to fix back in 1992?

Re: Juan McCain Trying to Save Himself

Why do we need to ask that? Are you suggesting that the Clintons have not had success in life? Little Bush, on the other hand, has destroyed everything he's laid his eyes, but has been fortunate enough to have a successful father to drag him up after each catastrophe.

John McCain not Trustworthy

He divorced his first wife after returning from vietnam for a rich girl Cindy Hensley.

He had an affair with this woman while he was married to his former who was physically messed up from an accident.(what a nice guy he was...)

Can you trust a person who had an affair while his physically injured wife stays at home with another person, and then has the audacity to marry the other one shortly thereafter ????
not a trustworthy person..........

A person's character defines his future intents when he's confronted with unforeseen circumstances.

Chicken or Egg ??

Which came 1st? McCain support for telecom, which then garners lobbyist support. Or lobbyist support for McCain, which then garners telecom support.

And that answer isn't as obvious as it seems. No matter which side of an issue a Senator decides to support(especially a member of the Commerce committee), he can find plenty of money to back his election campaigns. Many times a Senator will take a side on an issue and the money THEN just naturally follows.

I know that goes against the standard thinking that a Senator is for sale, but there is so much money on BOTH sides of every issue, that a Senator doesn't HAVE TO sell his vote. He gets the money in either case.

I agree. I admitadely did not read the whole article, but from the is listed here I don't see anything other than John McCain supported an issue that lobyists also supported. I'm sure within a year any Senator supports a measure that happens to align with special interest, regardless of the special interests.

I think their point is he cherry picks the items and like Haley's Comet you will get even the NY Times to point out liberal lunacy from time to time.

Meanwhile, he also go after idiots like McCain. Being a war hero doesn't excuse idiocy and selling out the American people nearly 4 decades later.

In this instance Drudge is pointing out that the Times has learned being locked in a box and beaten doesn't inoculate you from being a typical political whore who should be thrown out of Congress.

If anything, this article in the NYT is more of a whitewash. Most Americans couldn't care less about politicians having dealings with lobbyists. That's like saying the sky is blue.

If someone really wants to legitimately trash McCain, one need only point out his support of civil rights for the illegal enemy combatants in Club Gitmo, as well as his undying support of shamnesty for illegal aliens.

Both are very conservative slanted. One (Colbert) is satire and the other (Drudge) wants to be taken seriously. Matt does more than just link stories. Often times he either misrepresents the story or point with his own commentary, chooses those articles that show only his point of view, or simply makes stuff up and says something like, "more details to follow."

The guy is a conservative hack and Colbert is pretending to be a conservative hack. Thus the comment I made.

have you ever read his site? he picks and chooses stories and links to them. start observing WHICH stories he picks and chooses and then maybe you will understand.

Drudge is not an idiot. he serves a purpose by putting this story out there---the purpose in this situation is to give an extra push to another Republican candidate.

Re: drudge is a right wing joke....

Yeah, I've read the New York Times, articles from the AP and that HDNet show with Dan RaTHer. None appear to be part of a right wing anything. If anything, the opposite is true, which is why RaTHer is now with HDNet instead of disgraced CBS News.

Meanwhile he also links (every day) to everyone ('s columns) from Rosie O' Donnell to Eleanor Clift and Pravda to Islamic Rep Wire.

You only see what you want to see but it's ALL there for anyone who bothers to look.

We need to have some right wing media out there to counteract all the left wing liberal media propaganda. If it wasn't for Fox (which, BTW, is fair and balanced) then we would have nothing other than a sea of reporters who feel justified in pushing their own leftist socialism down the throats of America.

McPain

Leave it to the Times to wait until the absolute last minute to drop a bomb like this.

That being said, McCain deserves what he gets. Idiot.

I don't think he needed to give anyone special treatment - I think he was already in bed with the telcos long before any of this started.

This is news?

McCain just gone done pandering to the entire country of Mexico. You think for 2 seconds he wouldn't pander to a telecom.

Hell, all of Congress kisses the ass of corporate America which is largely why Congressional approval ratings are near their lowest in history.

He is just one of many whores in Washington for sale to the highest bidder.

F*ck McCain and the rest of the pseudo-Republicans. It's hacks like him that are the reason the nation is in a tailspin.

Imagine! Far Left-Wing NYT Holds Damning Story Till Election

What a big surprise!

The far-left nutjobs at the NYT holding a "damning" piece until just before the Iowa caucuses. This is clearly meant to stop McCain's momentum and smear the GOP overall.

They're (NYT) firmly in the bag for the Clintons. Always have been, always will.

What's wrong?

If McCain is negotiating with the NYTimes behind the scenes to sit on a story, I'd like to know about it.

And I'd like to thank Matt Drudge for letting me know about it.

The story is either accurate or it's not. McCain should be able to withstand the story if he's got nothing to hide. He definitely shouldn't be working behind the scenes to squash a story. If he's the national hero that he paints himself to be, then he should have no problem explaining why the story is wrong in public, rather than having his team suppress it. Why the hell would he need to suppress something that's not true?

"Matt Drudge Launches Telecom Bomb At John McCain
Says presidential candidate pandered to telecom lobbyist...."

And what of the name-calling here about Drudge ("launches bomb" "gossip hound" "raking the muck")? And what of the sub-headline here that says that Drudge is the one saying that McCain pandered to a lobbyist? Isn't it the NYTimes's sources that are saying that? Drudge is reporting on the alleged attempted coverup of the Times story by McCain's team. Why such stilted reporting at Broadbandreports?

Thanks Drudge.

Fools will follow

Let morons continue to follow the ultra right wing radical conservative, Matt Drudge. I think people get it that the right wing spin machine has come unraveled...Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Coulter, and all their ilk don't enjoy the same kind of bully pulpit today that they enjoyed through the war-mongering early years of the Bush administration. There are SO many outlets for accurate information on the Internet today, that these people are turning entirely irrelevent to public discourse.
