Things keep getting worse for anti-piracy outfit...
(old news - 10:45AM Friday Sep 21 2007)
tags: legal · Fileswapping · business · trouble
Tipped by Tsume See Profile
We're still digging through the leaked MediaDefender e-mails and are pretty astounded by how deep the rabbit hole goes, including plans for a version of their "MiiVi" honeypot for Mac, some ARIN abuse complaints and discussions with the New York Attorney General's office about handing over user data to law enforcement.

As if the 700MB of leaked mail didn't do enough harm to the Torrent polluting anti-piracy company, hackers this week also released the company's source code -- which includes the tools the company uses to place dummy files on p2p networks. The nfo for the pack, now circulating via p2p, says someone employed at the company released the tools:
The source is complete for their operations regarding Kazaa, bittorrent, gnutella etc. This system is now released for the public in order to identify the decoys they set up. A special thanks to the MD employee that gave this to us.
The applications in the pack have such names as BTPoster, BTSeedInflator and BTDecoyClient, and all are focused on disrupting BitTorrent or other p2p network use. The hackers in question, who call themselves the "Media Defender Defenders" continue to post new information about the company at this website, including legal threats, e-mails from the MD CEO, and the hacker's response to said threats.

MediaDefender a victim of the Streisand Effect

From Wikipedia:

The "Streisand effect" is a term used to describe a phenomenon on the Internet where an attempt to censor or remove (in particular, by the means of cease-and-desist letters) a certain piece of information (for example, a photograph, file, or even a whole website) backfires and the information receives extensive publicity on the Internet, often widely mirrored, or distributed on file-sharing networks in a short period of time.

»yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=···/1237203

This is exactly what has happened to MediaDefender.

More like never piss off your employees. This is obviously a gift from someone either unhappy about their job evaluation at MD, or an internal disgruntled one.

Gotta love the reply this guy gives MediaDefender's law firm:

Re: Funny

Here's my question.

So these guys (not just MDD, just smartass hacker guy in general) are basically fighting an information war with some company and his hired lawyer.

So they get an email from said lawyer and their immediate response is to fire off a smartass email; wouldn't it be better to just keep your mouth shut that way the lawyer sees his client as just a job, instead of risking him taking it personally and coming after you for revenge; with the added benefit that you deprive the enemy of more information?

That's what I'd do, then my adversary wouldn't know if he had even hit me or if I even really exist in the form he thinks I do and the lawyer remains basically a mercenary with little allegiance to his client beyond what he is paid; they just keep firing into the wind.

Re: Funny

Naw, it's much funnier to ridicule the idiot lawyers on a a website.

Honestly, having known more than a few lawyers over the years who have highly inflated egos, I do find it amusing imagining a bunch of suits sitting in an office somewhere plotting their next move against a few twenty-something hackers who are safe and sound in Norway. For some reason, the rest of the world doesn't seem to give much of a crap when US lawyers start throwing their weight around (for obvious reasons!)

Well it may make for interesting reading, but it's just not wise.

Maybe they are right now. What happens if they have to go to the states for some reason? What happens if Norway law enforcement has a change of heart? What happens if they don't actually live in Norway and the lawyer gets smart and hires his own hackers?

It's just not smart; keep your cards hidden and you have more options than if you sound off just to stroke your ego.

ARIN abuse complaints?

I've never heard of ARIN going after someone due to abuse. I would imagine you'd have to simultaneously be serving child porn, hacking government computers, sending many megabits of spam and of course have an upstream provider that really, really does not care.

May be backwords here but...

It's getting old hearing about how all of these "hackers" try to save the planet like in that stupid movie.

So let's start, first p2p was created to share stuff. Well that's nice and all but it now it gives morons the ability to share their legal stuff to people who want illegal copies. And of course, lets not forget people that just don't give a rats ass about legality so they share everything because it's just "bits" right? Anyway, so MD comes along and decides to cramp the moron style and clog up even more bandwidth by sharing garbage. I could care less as I'm not interested in p2p but it is a neat idea, though a huge wasted of bandwidth and only increases my gaming latency.

So now, we have MDD. They scratched the protocol a bit and post information about MD (now that's REAL hacking)a. Now they think there all bad-ass because they are serving leaked content, wow. Oh and then there's the "you can get me because I'm in Norway" crap. Ohh, they can use that 12yr old internet anonymous stuff in real life, impressive.

Lame.

Learn how to spell. It isn't "there" it's "their."

Also, you got your tenses mixed up: "They scratched the protocol a bit and post information about MD..."

That ought to be "posted."

Lame - the Norwegian writes English better than you.

.

Actually it's 'they're' which is the contraction of 'they' and 'are'; as in, "...they're all bad ass..."

And if you're (contraction of 'you' and 'are') going to play grammar cop, at least know WTF you are talking about.

Re: May be backwords here but...

You are correct - I thought it was the possessive, but it's the contraction.

Actually, it is still extremely awkward with "they're." "They are all bad-ass" isn't a real elegant clause either.

Lame car you have as an avatar.

And before you write anything about my avatar, yeah, I know - lame too.

It's lame that you actually posted a response to your incorrect usage of grammar. Face it, it's the internet, where millions of people type in lowercase all day long and nobody cares unless YOU TURN ON THE CAPSLOCK KEY, THEN THEY THINK YOU'RE YELLING AT THEM...

The best part is MD working with the AG of NY though! (I guess we use the same "If you have nothing to hide then why be concerned?" excuse again just like with the NSA wiretapping stuff? I guess my point is simply this: No oversight of the system leads to abuse of the system every time.

While I don't support any type of crime, I have to say, it all seems a bit like a natural checks and balances to me. None of the parties involved seem to be in a position to claim innocence anyway.

Nice, the only response was grammar correction; now that's a comeback!

By the way, nobody likes grammar police on the internet but after the responses to your post it should be obvious.

Edit: Figured I'd change BTW to by the way since you aren't fond of 'texting' style. Don't need to get harped on for that too .

Go Foreign Countries!

I always get a kick out of all the companies in the US wasting their time and money trying to sue and/or shut down sites that are located abroad. Granted, the US is the "most powerful nation on earth" but our laws mean nearly nothing elsewhere. Silly American companies thinking they can control the world.

what a bunch of scumbags...

From reading through it some, those idiots even used Tor and anon proxies in order to do their deeds...for the record labels...jeez.

Comments like this are just repugnant:

Package the decoys well. Make album art and nfo files if you need to. Make them look real. The music labels will be looking at them and will be pissed if they are obviously decoys.
