story category Mediacom: 20Mbps Coming?
Also: 7 Free HD channels moved into basic tier
(old news - 05:13PM Monday Jan 28 2008)
tags: competition · business · bandwidth · cable · HDTV · Mediacom
Local Illinois websites report that Mediacom has been giving customers seven free HD channels (ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, Discovery Theater HD, TNT HD, TBS HD, CNN HD and Fox Sports Midwest HD) under the name HD Family Basic. The seven channels will be incorporated into the company's Family Basic plan at no cost. Users in our Mediacom forum have generally been unimpressed with the company's HD lineup when compared to other providers.

As an aside, we're starting to see some unconfirmed rumbling in our forums that a 20Mbps Mediacom tier should pop up next month for some, something we're trying to confirm with the provider. To temper enthusiasm some, recall the company recently informed investors they'd be taking a "back seat" when it comes to deploying DOCSIS 3.0.

Sure

Mediacom is giving customers seven free HD channels (ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, Discovery Theater HD, TNT HD, TBS HD, CNN HD and Fox Sports Midwest HD) under the name HD Family Basic

For the first 6 months. After that you will incur normal HD programming costs.

Comacst already gives them for "free"

I have the "digital silver" package and a Tivo-HD with a cableCARD. ($1.95/mo for cableCARD)

Besides my local networks HD feeds I also receive

173 ESPN HD
174 ESPN2 HD
660 Universal HD
661 MHD
662 TNT in HD
663 HD Theater
664 MOJO / Select FSN HD Events
665 Versus / Golf Channel HD
670 A&E HD
671 The History Channel HD
672 USA HD
673 National Geographic HD

With no additional "HD programming" charge

Comcast not charge extra for anything
I guess they must be charging high enough for the tier, or there's good competition in your area.

Re: Comacst already gives them for "free"

Well normally they would charge the $8 HD converter box plus the $2 "advanced" remote control fee to get these on top of having a digital package.

Definantly worth getting a cableCARD compatible TV or DVR

Directv is the way to go!!!

If HD is what you're looking for then Directv is the best option.

Re: Directv is the way to go!!!

I'm not sure... I think I'd want to see a picture comparison of each:
Cable HD (Time Warner), DirecTV and Uverse to see which would be best for me.

There will be no 20/2 Service...

As it was announced here:

I'm sorry to say there is no testing of a 20/2 meg service, nor will any launch of said be occurring in Feb or any time in the near future.
Apparently Mediacom does not plan on a 20/2 service release. Bainch works in Mediacom's corporate office in Middletown NY so this is as solid confirmation as you will probably see.

I'll vouch for Bainch too. It doesn't get any more official than that.

Why?

Why would MediaCom do a 20/2 service when they can't even get the 15/1 service anywhere near what's it supposed to be running?

I usually get 5/1, but I pay for 15/1 (a tremendous amount of money each month).

They say there's no problem, and the tech always remind me when I call for support that it's "up to" 15 megs down.

Follow Cablevision..

Cablevision does 30/5 (which is really an uncapped ~38/15 but averages 27/4.X based upon node congestion & overhead). Comcast and Time Warner can learn a thing or two about how to do high speed right.

That'll be the day.

Its good to get History HD too...but lets see how quickly this materializes.
It took 5 weeks to get a HD receiver anyways so I don't mind waiting for another couple weeks....

I called Mediacom last night

Complaining about the lack of HD offerings and the slow speed of my 8Mbps Internet connection. The rep I spoke with confirmed that new HD channels are available in a free tier, and that some of their current HD offerings like HDNet and Mojo would become part of the $7/month HD tier.

In fact, she said it was effective yesterday, but as of now I have yet to see anything.
