This just illustrates why ISPs should just stick to the "dumb pipe" business model. There are so many sites from which users can get free email, why does any ISP in this day and age need to even offer it? -- "Net Neutrality" zealots - the people you can thank for your capped Internet service.

For me personally, I just pay for separate email hosting for my own domain. I've lost count of how many times I've switched ISPs in the past 10 years and I couldn't imagine having to switch emails each time. Though had Gmail been around back in 1999 or 2000 I might have just gone with them and them alone. -- "Net Neutrality" zealots - the people you can thank for your capped Internet service.

True, but why pay for an email system with problems when you can get it for free? Because free providers will eventually sneak in more and more "targeted advertisements". The next step is that they start scanning the contents of the email for keywords so that they can deliver the right ad.
Nothing is ever "free". If you don't pay with it through money, you are likely paying with some privacy, or the false expectation thereof.
Google and its products is one of the greatest example of a major company who doesn't deal in selling a product, but in selling information. Information which partly comes from you, the consumer using it.
If you want to have a relatively secure, private email that you can also move around with at random, register your own domain, and host it with a good POP hoster. Will cost ya $25-30 a month, including the $10 a year it costs for the domain, and you are free to move your email anywhere. On top of that you can move the physical domain to a hosting provider in Canada, Europe, etc.... just in case you start to feel unsafe in the way the government is snooping on you thanks to the Patriot Act and such things.
In any case, in this case "free" isn't always better, it just doesn't cost any money. Privacy issues however is a whole different ballgame, and companies like Microsoft, Yahoo en Google - the three big "free" mail providers - are quickly becoming Information Dealers. Your information. -- "I reject your reality and substitute my own!"

| | | | | | Re: Ugh GMAIL uses the email addy and header to advertise to you. I see that all the time. It is at the top and I don't even see it anymore since I know to ignore it.
Comcast is worse. My mother wondered why she was getting ads at the portal so I told her. She wasn't happy. She called Comcast and nicely told them about it. She said she doesn't see them anymore. So, Comcast does have an opt-out. I was there a month ago and didn't see them.

| | Long ago Email hosting was a necessity for an ISP back in the day, when squawking modems and a Mac Performa were hot new items. The service, while antiquated, probably grabs a few customers, but I'm not sure it's worth it these days. | |

CMTS join:2005-01-25 Canada | Mediacom Email Issue Well like all others I am a satisfied subscriber of Mediacom from a pretty long time.I understand that the Email issue which is on going .I have read almost all the forums & find people are getting impatient & angry .Well the fact of the matter is no need to get impatient because this is just an email issue. Not am emergency .That is why the free email are there on the internet as ones backup eg,HOTMAIL,GMAIL,YAHOO,MSN and so many others .Like all of you I am getting emails here & there but am not impatient I immediately jumped on my backup email & am good to go ,no worries at all. I am pretty sure the engineers or the tech staff are working to get the problem fixed ASAP, but again try to understand this is IT world it takes some time to rectify these kind of issues .We are not talking of one or few computers ,they are dealing with millions of emails .So all of you my friends kindly be patient & see what happens .Happy Holidays to All.

| | Very Frustrating I wish Mediacom would provide truthful accurate info about what's going on and when email will work. They are telling the media everything is working now.
It looks like my incoming mail is working but outgoing is still not. It can take 8-10-12 hours to reach the intended receiver - or not at all.
I called tech services about something and found out we are no longer mail.mchsi.com, but are mail.mediacombb.net. Why has this not been reported to members?
I'm just awfully frustrated - like about 700,000 other members.
|
| | | Re: Very Frustrating
so did you go in and change things from mail.mchsi.com to the new mail.mediacombb.net ???
|
| | | | Re: Very Frustrating I changed the settings in my Outlook per the migration info webpage and no change... no new mail getting out (or in from other email clients/accts that I have).... arrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!! | |
|
| | | Thank you sooooooo much!! I haven't had my emails since last week12/7/2009...When I read your post and notice that Mediacom changed the server name and change that information my emails came through all 156 of them. THANK YOU once again! | |
|
| | No mail I can't even log in on e-mail--- yet I'm told all is up and running. what gives. | |
|
| | it's all at&t's fault! a group within at&t used to run mediacom e-mail ... this is prolly ALL their fault.
Way to go Darth Felo! | |

| | Mediacom email Add my name to the growing list of unhappy customers who pay m'com well over $150 month so that we can neither send nor receive our e-mail--FOR OVER 6 DAYS!!!! Dish--we're well on our way... | |

| | Entourage & Mac Does anyone know what mediacom email server the Mac running Entourage should use??? My current server POP name is mail.mchsi.com and it isn't correct with the upgrade.
Thanks! | |

| | incorrect information I would really like some accurate information, as well. Mediacom has an automated message on their tech service line, which is very annoying. They did tell the media that everything was fixed when it was not. As a business owner with Mediacom e-mail, this has greatly affected my business. Especially when everyone had ben told that the problems are fixed. I have sent out several "test" e-mails and they are taking 24 hours to be delivered. They say that no e-mails have been lost. This is not true. I have several e-mails that have been sent to me that I have not yet received (from 5 and 6 days ago). One thing that I am able to receive now on a regular basis is junk mail. Before this 'upgrade' I was receiving maybe 5 a day. Now I would estimate it to be 50 a day.
If anyone has any updated information on when this will be fixed please advise.
|
| | Spam after update After that mediacom update my spam has increased 200%! I think they broke the spam blocker. | |

BS @mchsi.com | Ridiculous and Wrong I have a friend who is missing around 1200 e-mails because of this! This is her business e-mail account and the missing e-mails contained crucial information. She is about to lose a $30,000 account and may have to shut down her business permanently if she does lose the account and doesn't get the information back by next week. She has been told two different stories: the first being that the e-mails are on a different server and all they need to do is retrieve them, which they haven't. Someone else there has pretty much told her the e-mails are just missing, period. I would say this is Mediacom's fault and hopefully she will have some legal recourse. This is someone's livelihood they are messing with here! I hope she sues them. They were the only ones that had the power to delete them permanently and if that's the case, I would say she has cause to do that.

| | | Re: Ridiculous and Wrong I am missing email, my email is coming back as Mail Delivery System error and it's just a mess! Some people have called and told me thier email to me is coming back saying i've blocked them!! Mediacom better get some fixes in place. I can't believe they consider this email upgrade done as of 10 Dec!! Then if you want help watch out they may charge you for it and not tell you which just happened to me. I didn't know about the charge until i called. ANY time a man comes out you get a 25 buck charge on your bill so watch for it!! Up until recently i have been totally satisfied with mediacom, i have all 3 services but i am getting to the point that i'm ready to look for another provider. | |
|
| | No service I am still without-mail service on Tuesday, 12/22
No one at Mediacom is helpful.
I am forced to leave and go to another server.
This is ridiculous.
