Mediacom Expands Gigabit Speeds to 1250 Markets

Mediacom continues to expand deployment of gigabit broadband service, and now says the company offers the ultra-fast speeds in more than 1,250 communities. A company announcement indicates that Mediacom has pushed gigabit connectivity into 27 additional markets across Delaware, Maryland and Michigan. Mediacom calls these gigabit upgrades its "Gigasphere" initiative, and says it will ultimately deploy the ultra-fast service to 3 million homes and businesses within its 22 state footprint.

In most of these markets, 1 Gbps down, 50 Mbps up service with a 6 TB usage cap will cost $140 per month, while a 500 Mbps down, 30 Mbps up service with a 4 TB usage cap will cost users $120 per month.

These markets are also seeing the introduction of a 500 Mbps tier, and the company is quick to indicate the DOCSIS 3.1 technology will pave the way for multi-gigabit speeds, eventually.

“In addition to enhancing speeds for residential and small business customers today, the Gigasphere platform we have deployed also lays the groundwork for offering multi-Gig services in the future,” says company CTO JR Walden. “This next generation technology is an excellent complement to the Gigabit+ Fiber SolutionsTM that Mediacom Business has been offering local businesses in our markets for many years.”

Users can check Mediacom gigabit broadband availability over at the company's website.

Mediacom may get low Customer Ratings...

but you have to give them kudos for pushing Gig speeds out to so many rural communities.

Data Costs

More metered usage that has no rational cost model. In Comcast metered areas I read they charge $10/50GB ($200/TB) when their 1TB cap is exceeded. Mediacom's 500Mbps plan provides 4TB for $120 ($30/TB) and a 1Gbps 6TB plan for $160 (~$25/TB) (unable to find overage fee info on the plan). Comcast's costs are loony and Mediacom charges less for faster data than slower data. I guess that's what happens when engineering tells marketing the incremental costs are almost nothing and marketing throws mud at the wall.
