Same as the old Qwest boss?
(old news - 11:11AM Monday Aug 13 2007)

Edward Mueller will be Qwest's new CEO, and will start with a salary of $1.2 million and a minimum bonus of $947,000 (plus stock-based incentives). As expected, Mueller won't be changing anything when it comes to Qwest taking a wait-and-see approach to next-gen broadband and IPTV deployment:
Click for full size
Mueller told analysts today that he likes Qwest's strategy for video sales to consumers. Bigger phone companies such as AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. have spent billions of dollars to upgrade networks to carry TV signals, while Qwest sells DirecTV Inc.'s satellite TV service to phone customers.
Qwest plans to offer limited cherry-picked deployment of both VDSL and FTTH, but lacks the assets to dive head first into the IPTV market. Instead, they'll continue to rely on bundled satellite and portal video for their broader userbase.

buyout material

They are just waiting on the new AT&T to dangle an attractive buyout offer in front of their face.

that's pretty much what I think.....Will the FCC and government allow it? Of course! They'll play the "oh, it might be bad for the people" game, then, just like the AT&T+Bellsouth merger, they'll let them both merge....after all, it does profit the government in NSA heavily...

I really don't think an AT&T/Qwest merger will ever happen. The feds most likely would oppose this next telco consolidation and I also doubt AT&T will even want them.

Given how the US dollar is beaten down, I expect a foreign entity to take Qwest over. Possibly someone like Deutsche Telekom, the parent of T-Mobile wireless in the US. That would get Deutsche Telekom even more in to the US marketplace. And it would get T-Mobile access to Qwest's national fiber network and allow T-Mobile to more easily expand nationally.

This will hurt in the end

there (S)tragedy is a joke and I'm mad because Comcast and qwest are the only two options and I thought maybe qwest might step up their game but I guess they don't have the balls to compete with other ISPS like Verizon to offer next gen broad band services instead rely on aging technolgy.

Old News

We have heard this all before in 1990. What have they done since then? Nothing! Besides, Comcast is way ahead of them in Denver. FTTN is already a reality and FTTH is an obvious next step.

Wish I could get a package like that

Does not matter what happens, you get a MINIMUM bonus of $947,000 *PLUS* stock-based incentives. Sounds like incentive to run the business into the ground and get the stocks as high as possible, then dump.

Oh well, better than the $4,400,000 bonus than the last one had.

Overcompensated vulture...

$947,000 minimum bonus ? Sorry, but I thought bonuses were always granted based on performance or profitability. According to the news, the guy gets a guaranteed bonus with this minimum bonus crap ? Man, I'd like to have a minimum bonus for doing jack squat like these executive guys. $deity knows I've got more marketable skills than most of them (considering theirs usually are the ability to play golf and to sit pretty for investor press conferences).

Anyway, the only upside is that this guy HAS TO BE better than Nacchio was.

You're misinterpreting the typically yellow journalistic headline. The minimum bonus number is the minimum amount he will be paid IF bonuses are paid out at all.

For example, he may have a target bonus of 100%, but a minimum bonus of 75% and an incentive bonus of %125

Now, defining the trigger level for bonuses for the guy is a different question for a different day.

That clarifies it. It sounded like he was getting a bonus of $900+k regardless of performance from the wording in the article.

Now, defining the trigger level for bonuses for the guy is a different question for a different day.

Yeah, the minimum bonus language is a little misleading.

I'll be CEO..

Just give me a salary of $950,000 with no stock-based incentives and no bonus and I'll be CEO of Qwest. I'm sure I can do better than what they already have.

QWEST DSL

Qwest users be careful of your billing. mine has been changing for a year now. Surpose to be $82.10 per month they have it over $200.00. needless to say I have had a few words with Qwest, I'm not sure but I think their hard of hearing. So watch your bill closely. And they will even be nice enough to bundle services for you. All I ordered was DSL, but they were nice and added other changes, such as my Directv, without me knowing or giving my ok. Now we know how the bosses get so much money.

Re: QWEST DSL

YES I ALREADY HAVE DIRECTV ,AND HAVE HAD EVER SINCE DIRECTV HAS BEEN ON THE MARKET, QWEST MAKES THESE CHANGES WITHOUT YOUR OK, I FORGOT TO MENTION THEY WERE ALSO NICE ENOUGH TO HOOK MY LONG DISTANCE UP ON MY HOME PHONE, WHICH WE DO NOT USE, JUST OUR CELLS, LOT CHEAPER. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM, THEY ARE JUST HOPEING THE CUSTOMER WON'T CHECK THAT CLOSE AND JUST WRITE THE CHECK OUT EACH MONTH. GET THIS, AFTER THEY FOUND OUT I HAD CELL PHONES, THEY MAILED 8 CELLS, AND ALMOST 400.00 BILL, NOW THAT WAS SOMETHING TO WORK WITH. GENE.
