Blog 'newyork' » Met Offers Close-Up of Egyptian Tombs

NEW YORK Jan. 28 — The sculptor and painter must have had artistic differences. The figures carved into the Egyptian tomb of Perneb were, perhaps, a little too wide for the painter's aesthetic sense. The carvings weren't completely filled in when the time came to paint them, making them look that much thinner.

It's the kind of detail visitors to the Egyptian exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art might never have noticed because of the glass barriers that kept them from getting too near.

But now visitors have a rare opportunity to get close to the walls of two ancient tombs. The glass coverings have been removed as part of a major renovation project, and new ones won't be in place for six weeks.

I'll check that out

When I go to work this friday I knew that section reopened this week, but was unaware of that it offered such a major change. I knew that it was going to be a hell of alot different from the last stuff they had up there before. But that sounds good.

Definitely check it out and let us know what you think... if it really does enhance the experience, I will make it a point to go see it

Alright I checked it out and the area looks awesome. I didn't get on the line to check out the inside of the tomb and stuff cause I only have a certain amount of time as a break, but i'll try this friday since i get to work way too early to clock in. But the rest of the stuff they have put up looks amazing. Seriously a must go see.

Is that the one where you go in

Is that in the area right near the enterance. It was pretty cool to see. I like that part. I went into an area facing Central Park with a wading pool and some Egyptian scarcoughus thing. It said I could touch it which was cool. Doesn't the oils from people's hands damage the artifacts. They should close off that section while they renovate. I haven't had a chance to really go through the Met and I probably never will again. I did that for a World Cultures project while I had night classes at the time so my schedule only allowed a 2 hr window to look at the stuff. It was hard to get to for the first time. I brought my digi cam and took some pics but I didn't get a chance to develop them.

It was really cool though, when you get the little green button thing. I had to run back to the train to make it back to LaGuardia at 5:45 pm. In fact, I have night classes at 6 right now and I am at home. So I actually have to leave here too. Damn I have no time anymore, which really sucks. The only time I have is to sleep.
