NEW YORK Jan. 28 The sculptor and painter must have had artistic differences. The figures carved into the Egyptian tomb of Perneb were, perhaps, a little too wide for the painter's aesthetic sense. The carvings weren't completely filled in when the time came to paint them, making them look that much thinner.
It's the kind of detail visitors to the Egyptian exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art might never have noticed because of the glass barriers that kept them from getting too near.
But now visitors have a rare opportunity to get close to the walls of two ancient tombs. The glass coverings have been removed as part of a major renovation project, and new ones won't be in place for six weeks.
