By ALISA TANG, Associated Press Writer - 08/11/04

BANGKOK, Thailand - Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday that it will offer a low-cost, stripped down edition of its Windows XP operating system in Asia starting in October, as it strives to fortify market share against erosion from the open-source Linux system and software piracy.

-Microsoft's Third World Donation-

Why not just "donate"...(not sell) all of those dusty, factory sealed Windows 98 Second Edition CD's and ship them off for free to Asia with a MS Security Update CD?

A fully patched Win98SE machine is just as good.

Re: -Microsoft's Third World Donation-

Naw, the lack of security fixes for W98 isn't because it is so secure -- it is because it is security is no longer being upgraded for it except if a dire circumstance occurs.

Microsoft can't ship off old unsupported software and give it away. Not to Asia, not to Africa, not to Antartcia. Not for networked computers anyway.

Even if Americans didn't care about the folks there, consider the open spam relays they'd be creating and the effect that would have here.

This is a retartded approach by MS

Networking is VERY limited, can't do home networking nor sharing printers over the network. Can only run 'three programs concurrently' and max. resolution is 800x600. So let me get this straight. You can get linux free with none of these limitations or you can PAY for a crippled version of XP. Hmmmmm, that is a though decision.

Linux is only free to download.

The support isn't free. You pay with your time.

That isn't 'crippled',

Looks like a boondoggle on consumers

Initially I thought it was a good idea, but after reading here
»www.microsoft.com/presspass/pres···otPR.asp

I think it *sounds* like a boondoggle on Asian consumers.

Still, Microsoft has to react to Linux in the region, it has to do something.

What MS should consider for old PIIs

What MS should consider doing is creating a stripped down version of Windows XP for old PII class computers, and retailing that at a competitive price that would be attractive for computers that will only last another 1-3 years.
