Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Company says they own half the code...
(old news - 10:17AM Monday Dec 20 2004)
tags: software · spyware
Microsoft's purchase of respected anti-spyware vendor Giant may have hit a snag, according to Eweek.com. A Florida company by the name of Sunbelt Software Distribution claims they own half of the Giant code, and all future definition updates. A Microsoft spokesman says the company is stretching the truth, and issued a press release stating in no uncertain terms that future releases "will be owned solely by Microsoft, and in no way will be co-owned by any third party."

Re: lol

Wasn't this covered pretty heavily in the security forum and a certain blog post? The forum thread would be worth having a look at in this regard.

Re: lol

Are they (whoever "they" is) going to keep release weekly spyware definitions. I bought a one year license of Giant and now i'm worried i just lost my money.

In other words...

Look for Sunbelt to be in court spending all their money until they are bankrupt or see them in a month or so being bought put by Microsoft.

And for Microsoft to say that Sunbelt is "stretching the truth", isn't that kind of of an irony?? Seems Microsoft does the exact same thing with all their frivolous patents.

This shouldn't be an issue

Microsoft has already said that they'd provide definition updates to Sunbelt for the remainder of the contract term, but apparently that's not good enough for them. They're just being greedy, and attempting to cash in on this publicity.

why do you want people to use IE? You must be one of those virus writers! you want people to use it because IE is easy to use for worms to sneak in!

Why do this? He likes one browser, you like another: why make it a religious war?

And you also evince a certain lack of awareness for "context": neither the posting tag nor avatar you were responding to are preserved over time, so if either one of them changes eventually, your flame will be seen as devoid of any context whatsoever.

I thought he was responding (admittedly off-topic) to the sig, which is permanent (unless it's edited later to remove the context).

Besides, with some it *is* a religious war as far as Microsoft is concerned.

Of course the irony here is that Jeremy speaks of Sunbelt: "They're just being greedy, and attempting to cash in on this publicity." Many would agree that Microsoft is in this same category of corparate behavior. Hey, all they're trying to do (Sunbelt) is make a few bucks.

Said elsewhere, accurately, "Pot. Kettle. Black."

The sig (which won't be showing up in future posts) says nothing about using IE.

Re: This shouldn't be an issue

BUt in the current posts, as they are right now, combine the sig with the avatar and you can immediately see why it was taken the way it was.

When the sig says "I do not trust Firefox. Spread anything besides that horrid piece of crap." and the avatar states to "Spread the world's most popular browser", one can see just how easy it is to link the two.

Lol! One of "those virus writers?". "Easy for worms to sneak in?" I think you're "one of those" people who needs a license to use the internet.

Back to the subject of this thread...
I totally agree with Jeremy. Sunbelt is just going for a payday on the wings of some publicity or a judge that's about as informed as alien9999999. Leave it to some idiot company to try to ruin something that could be good. I was anxious to see what came of this great tool after Microsoft got hold of it. Now I guess I'll have forgotten about it by the time the courts finish dragging their asses on it.

And if some other company had bought something that Microsoft had a stake in, Microsoft wouldn't do the same thing??

Maybe they would, maybe they wouldn't. But that's not what's at issue here, so it really doesn't matter what Microsoft would do.

So I guess we are being censored on our opinions now too. I see that DSLR is getting to be a place where you can only say what other people think you should.

Hardly... They are simply attempting to protect their intellectual property rights... They've already invested quite a bit in to this project and apparently are making money off of it. If that's the case, you can't blame them for trying to protect that investment.

Now, where I have heard that come from before?...

Hi All:

Alex Eckelberry of Sunbelt has posted in the Security forum thread devoted to this issue:

»Microsoft Acquires GIANT AntiSpyware

Best,

Eric L. Howes

You Suck

But the REAL Question is...

If M$ has it's fine cast of programmers involved with coding.. can we actually trust the code to work for our benefit or will it be more likely to be bug riddled that exposes us to more problems than we already have?

Re: But the REAL Question is...

Tell you what.

You write XP so it runs perfectly. THen come back and maybe then you can post about bad programmers.

You Suck

Re: But the REAL Question is...

Tell you what... it's snot my job to create a perfect XP.... I didn't create it,and I have no involvement with its archeicutre, design, implementation or testing.. I only get the final products. I know there's no such thing as "Perfect Code", but this just looks to be another opportunity for us (the end user) to get another series of attacks on our systems, that we may not have any opportunity to stop. I admit, I have written tons of code, and my code has, on occasion, had some errors, but once I fix them they don't open exposures in other systems components. I have written tons of "System Level code", it takes forsight and experience... something you don't get fresh out of school...

From the article

"While Microsoft's product will be free through the beta period, the company has dropped hints that it plans to charge for a final version."

Thank you Microsoft. We buy your OS, bugs, security risks, and all, and you want to charge us a 2nd time to protect us from your flaws.

Wow... some of you guys (and gals?) need some chill pills.

'm running off back to Wilders, where the conversation is never allowed to get quite this heated.

I'll still pop in here for the odd bit of info, though.

Enjoy.
