Tied to Windows Vista release

tags: competition · VoIP · software
The Wall Street Journal (registration required) is reporting that Microsoft is about to make their VoIP move. "We are going to enter the voice over IP market [in] the beginning of next year," Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said at a Microsoft conference in Tokyo. VoIP will be a significant part of Vista, Microsoft's new operating system set for consumer release sometime in January.

Another hole in Windows?

Applications do not belong in the OS. Having VoIP as a "significant" part of Vista will probably open up as many holes as forcing IE to be integral to Windows did. Of course, the fact that IE was forced in with no planning as a stop gap for the 'kill the competition' lawsuit and this VoIP should be better planned and thought out, MIGHT make a difference in how exploitable the VoIP links are.

Re: Another hole in Windows?

Bla, Bla.....

First, saying that is "PART" of Vista does not means that is coded into Vista. Altough, I have to admit I have not read the full article.

There are many VoIP programs today that run in windows... Take Cisco IPCC. In addition, they do not have to run in the OS itself, they can work aspart of the Messenger or other web interface.

Have not read it either, do not had a WSJ account, but the rehash on the DSL blurb did state "significant part". That brings back memories of the Kill Netscape Program and the resulting lawsuit and rhetoric and the result thereof.

Is this just MSN Messenger?

Since we can't see the article without paying, are they just talking about Messenger?

Re: Is this just MSN Messenger?

I think they are. Msgr already has VoIP functions, PC to PC and PC to Phn. The PC to Phn is billed by another company I believe.

Re: Is this just MSN Messenger?

The new messenger beta has verizon voip built in. I have used it to call to my family in the usa and it works pretty good. Of course over wimax here it tends to echo when lots of people use the system at nite.

Yes, it is part of Messenger. You can see how it works if you download

Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Beta
»ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?···7ccd5617

P.S. It is not built into Vista. It is just a product that will be rolled out around the same time. And it works just fine on XP.

P.P.S. The above link has all the Windows Live Betas listed down the left side.

Terms of Service

I can already see their "terms of service".

Microsoft VoIp can only be installed with one (1) phone in use. Usage of send (2nd) phone requires you to buy a second (2nd) Microsoft VoIp line or service plan. Microsoft VoIp must be used only with Microsoft DRM Certified phones. DRM updates will be uploaded to your phone automatically. Microsoft VoIp also will call home to validate (Genuine VoIp Program) your line as to having only one (1) Microsoft DRM Certified phone per line or per service plan. International rates may apply during validation.

Re: Terms of Service

Why??? MS terms of service are usually good. Take their Live OneCare.. you can installed in up-to 3 PCs... for the same price. Norton only one...

Fallouts of Microsoft on VOIP

While Microsoft does not get the first mover advantage in the VOIP marketplace, they would definitely be a formidable force because of their market penetration. An interesting fact to watch out for is how this affects the pace of innonvation in the VOIP world in the long term. this will also have far reaching consequences for penetration of VOIP in the third world.•Read my article here

You going to trust MS for fone?

If I plan to call a tech support, has to reboot my phone a few times, and install some crapola anti-virus and take 10 mins to boot the phone - I might as well use my trusty reliable analog phone.
