The Microsoft Corp. pay-as-you-go personal computing initiative aimed at developing countries, which the company has been testing in Brazil, also could be a boon for VoIP in those territories.
However, whether or not these computers can be used for low-cost VoIP communication, one of the important benefits of computer access, will depend on whether local incumbents allow VoIP to pass their networks.
The programs, which will vary by country and partner, will provide consumers with computers equipped with Windows XP Home and basic productivity software at a low upfront price. Customers can sign up for a monthly subscription or buy prepaid cards of computer minutes to use the machine. After a certain number of minutes, the customer will own the computer.
