Microsoft Tests Version of Tuneup Service
(old news - 06:02PM Friday May 13 2005)
(AP) - Microsoft Corp. is rolling out a test version of an all-in-one subscription service that aims to protect computer users from viruses and spyware and give them tools to make machines speedier.

The Redmond-based software company is distributing Windows OneCare to its 60,000 employees this week. It plans to run a larger invitation-only test this summer, then launch a full-scale test by year's end.

Microsoft hasn't set a price for an annual subscription, but has said it would include unlimited phone, e-mail and chat support.

Not the solution I had in mind...

I'm not paying Microsoft additional money to fix all "THEIR" original mistakes. Provide it free of charge or don't provide it at all. This is garbage. One thing they did right was by deciding to provide MS AntiSpyware for free to it's customers.

How are viruses and spyware a Microsoft mistake?

I don't think he was referring to the viruses and spyware. I believe he was speaking of all of the hotfixes and security updates that plague Microsoft products.

But I could be mistaken.

This service has nothing to do with OS vulnerabilities. They are going to compete with other products and services that protect users from themselves.

What MSeng See Profile just said brings a tear to my eye. That is, sadly, why viruses and spyware are a problem. I have yet to find anything that doesn't require user intervention (i.e., clicking Yes to everything).

I agree whole heartedly that the average user does need to be protected from themselves. I have 5 computers sitting on my bench that have software problems because the owner of the computer decided not to read the "click Yes or No" completely, or at least they didn't understand it.

And now they're all being scanned for spyware and viruses. Once they're all clean from infection then I'll have to update with the latest MS patches to try to prevent this from happening again on their PC's.

A better question is why did Microsoft fail to deliver such products to their customers AGES ago?

Because someone would have sued them. It's the American Way, after all.

But seriously: Google keywords: anti-competitive; anti-trust
