Microsoft Unveils Kinect, New Slim Xbox 360
Also strikes broadband video content deal with ESPN
by Karl Bode Monday 14-Jun-2010 tags: business · hardware · gaming · bandwidth · caps
Microsoft held their E3 keynote in Los Angeles this morning, and as expected the primary focus was the company's "Kinect" motion-sensing camera. Though the company also announced they were expanding the Xbox360 video lineup by adding a significant amount of sports content through a deal with ESPN, including not only ESPN shows -- but also some live sporting events in HD (NBA, MLB, college football and college basketball). Said events include some interactivity during events with other Xbox 360 owners (polls, trivia, etc.), and both voice and gesture remote control via Kinect, which goes on sale in November at $150. Microsoft also introduced a slimmer version of the Xbox 360 with integrated 802.11N. There's no confirmation yet of a lingering rumor concerning Hulu integration.

Natal/Kinetc Demonstration

Was clearly a guy trying to fake act along with a prerendered recording.

The picture on the screen was moving before he started moving.

So... lol

Leo LaPorte and his crew got in there early yesterday morning and got mess with the Kinect system. They thought it was pretty cool. Becky Worley and Leo both played a couple of games and it worked fine for them....

I watched a video on Spike HD that specifically said it was a video of controller free gameplay of the StarWars game. Not live play. On Spike HD, It did not show a person live controlling the demonstration like with all the other games with Kinect.

After finding that video online, That video referenced above shows a person jumping infront of a screen that is showing a prerendered video. The person was not using the Kinect Device like with the other demontrations.

The above picture is taken out of context.

ESPN is cool and all, but the gesture based interface of "Kinect" seems more interesting to me...

Except this isn't the launch system crammed into a smaller box. It's a redesigned and re-engineered system on a 45nm process. Heat buildup and heat output is reduced. You're not going to see solder contact fatigue and board warping.

Lets hope not. I might actually buy a "next-gen" console.

Does it play Blu-Ray's?

Integrated wireless...

About time they began integrating that. I kept hearing complaints about people being unable to use their 360s on the Internet either because the Microsoft wireless adapter was too expensive, a Bridge adapter was too expensive, or they had no access to Ethernet with no Wi-Fi. There are some who have asked about using their laptops to serve the Xbox 360 Wi-Fi which worked flawlessly, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

ever notice the extra 40 ms of lag on a wifi connection ? me neither but some gamers will kill for that 30 to 40 ms. I don't get it but to each his own.

I bet the "slim" comes in at a heftier price tag.

Or maybe this will solve their over heating issue , by maybe using the metal case as a heat absorption device?

I just want to see the tear down, Im interested in if they solved the over heating.

And I will note I still have a first run 360 that runs literally 60 to 80 hours straight without over heating at all.

40ms extra lag? I get less than that total over a 100mi+ connection. Your wireless connection shouldn't be adding more than 2 to 4ms at worst.

considering my connection is already under 40 ms then if I had a wired connection that means the internet would travel backwards in time then.

I bet the "slim" comes in at a heftier price tag.
I bet you don't pay attention because they've already annoucned it's $299. Look for it thursday in your favorite store.

each successive motherboard they've had has used less and less power. RROD hasn't been much of an issue for well over a year maybe two. The new motherboards have CPUs that are 45 nm. The new xbox has one huge fan instead of 2 small fans. If you see the pics it has huge vents too.

Don't live in a big house with a lot of neighbors eh ?

My neighbors have every channel covered, and even some of them have n using multiple channels , and they all compete for the channels, adding 50 ms or more while it has to keep trying to send the packets.

Beisdes surely you must notice tongue in cheek humour also ?

Well technically MS hard drives are laptop hard drives. Honestly 250 GB and the ability to add 32 GB more is probably enough for most people at this point.

There are ways of using your own drive... and they do use laptop hdd's... though they must be Western Digital I believe and formatted with M$ filesystem... Though when you do something like that with the hardware it then violates the EULA (which can cause your system to be banned). So, thus rendering an upgrade pointless... as well as the filesystem limiting you to 120 GB's (mybad they upgraded the fs for 250 gb hdd's now anyways...) anyways...

Nope! I see it's been said already but my 360 purchased back in early 2008 had a 20GB WD SATA drive in it.... I know cos I popped it open and did my own HD mod and saved a good chunk of $$$ Only mod I have done and will ever do. Been running on it for 2 years now. It's not going to be banned.

Nice but most people can get ESPN3 through their ISP. If I wasn't already getting through Charter I'd be a bit more excited. I'd be even more excited if ESPN3 would broadcast MNF games.

Re: Awesome!

the difference being that they can watch ESPN3 on their TVs instead of their laptops.

For me, that is a very, very big difference. I cut cable years ago. The only thing I miss is the occasional sporting events. I have ESPN3, but a laptop/desktop just aint the same as a nice big TV.

And in 720p "HD" to boot? It'll probably be 3mbps highly compressed HD, but that's still better than what ESPN3.com is streaming.

A) you can hook your laptop/PC to your TV you know.

B) The ESPN3 you're getting on XBOX is the same as you are getting on the PC.

a) Yep. I share a TV with my girlfriend. If I'm watching sports, she wants to get on the laptop to do her thing. And I like looking up stats and info while i'm watching too. A solution which takes away those options isn't a solution for me.

b) even then, it'll still be more convenient than the alternative.

Does the PS3 have wireless N? I've never used the wireless on my PS3. I'd rather they leave out wireless and charge less for the people that don't want to use it.

No, the PS3 came out before wireless-N adoption started cranking up. But I'm talking about having it built-in from the get-go, not as an expensive add-on.

You will be waiting a long time. 8-10 year span with the 360 this gen. Between the redesign and Kinect. They are basically relaunching the 360. MS is banking on this Kinect. I personally hope it falls flat on its ass. I have no interest in it. 15 launch titles of nothing but shovelware.

Re: It's only a matter of time

Ugh, I know. It's disappointing, honestly. The hardware has made such bounding leaps ahead, yet there aren't any worthwhile games being released. Games aren't intuitive anymore, simply too straightforward. Maybe it's this reason that I'm discouraged from purchasing goods from these companies.

I say, move onward! I know Microsoft made leaps ahead with Windows 7... now why can't they do the right thing, and produce a new and upgraded platform -- that would HOPEFULLY be backwards compatible!

I'd love a PS3 -- Except the new ones aren't backwards compatible. That, honestly, is my entire reason for not purchasing.

Sad... competition isn't working.

Nintendo has targeted the families, as always.
Sony & Microsoft aren't adequate competitors, as, (in my humble opinion) xbox live is superior to PlayStation Network. It's sad. I say we need more competition!

I can't believe MS didn't put a blu-ray player in the new 360. That would have made it nearly perfect.

360 Arcade systems for dirt

The best thing about this annoucement is dirt-cheap XBOX 360 Arcade systems.

The Arcade is $150 now, but Target has it at that price PLUS you get a $50 gift card.

I just walked out of Target this morning with a brand-new 360 Arcade effectively for $99 (since I buy stuff like food and home supplies there anyway).

ya
for those of us that have(had) a 360 without an HDMI port the arcade is great

I traded in my old 360 and got one with an HDMI port (out of pocket cost was $60) and now if I play my HD DVD's or downloaded 1080P video it plays at 1080P (I hate HDCP with the fury of 1000 white hot suns)
