Microsoft Wants ESPN On Xbox 360
But can the console handle live sports streaming?
by Karl Bode Tuesday 19-Jan-2010 tags: Video · business · alternatives
"Cable guys" like HDNet CEO Mark Cuban frequently argue that Internet video will simply never replace cable TV, specifically because the Internet (at least currently) can't handle live broadcasts to millions of people (well, that and they have homes and boats paid for by the traditional cable business). According to the NY Times, Microsoft apparently isn't listening -- and is working on a deal with Disney that would bring live ESPN sporting events to the Xbox 360. While Microsoft says they have seen 2.2 million concurrent users globally, those users aren't all watching video at the same time and live events like Microsoft's 1 vs. 100 trivia game sees just 100,000 concurrent users. Still, with 360's in 39 million homes world wide, it's the opening salvo in a much broader battle.

How about a widget/app for Espn360 on Xbox360?

That would be a start. HD would be nice too.

Why bother?

My current ISP Charter gives me ESPN360. I don't need to buy a $50 per year "gold" subscription and I don't need to pay some extra fee to get it either. Now if this had stuff that was on regular ESPN and ESPN 2 like MNF then that'd be different.

No it's not actually. We have Metrocast.

I already pay for the Gold XBL subscription so depending on what the monthly fee is I would consider it.

You're paying it as part of your monthly internet bill. It's just included as opposed to being listed as "some extra fee".

yes my ISP pays 5 cents per sub per month. So my share is 60 cents per year. And as long as I'm paying that 60 cents anyways I might as well use my ISP to access it.

I agree. But that doesn't change the fact that you're still paying for it. Just because it's not an extra fee doesn't mean you're not paying for it.

While you THINK you have access anywhere you might be by logging in, you can't access ESPN360 from any ISP where ESPN doesn't have a agreement with the ISP/Cable operator. So it won't work with TWC or Cablevision as examples. And if you have a wireless data plan they won't allow it there either even with a approved carrier (ATT Wireless vs ATT U-verse).

You can access it. You just have to set up your account while on your "approved" espn360 connection. Then when you're away from home, go to espn360's website and log in. You'll be able to watch, even on ISPs which don't pay for it.

Sorry, wrong! I've tried, I have lot's of friends with Verizon DSL and can watch 360 at their homes using a account they setup for me but I can't on my home ISP which doesn't have an agreement, they literally block the IP addresses for the streaming part of the service. I can log in, see my profile name, post etc but not watch games.

Meh, I won't argue with you. I'll just laugh as I watch ESPN360 through my work's QWEST connection.

You'll notice that QWEST is not on that list. When I try viewing while *NOT* logged in, it won't work. When I view after logging in it works just fine.

Momentum is clearly building

Xbox is being positioned as a clear rival to a subscription video service. Consider that Xbox LIVE is in 20 million homes. Compare that with Comcast, the nation's largest MSO, which has 24 million video subs. If Microsoft can figure this out, they may have a true contender

The other things Microsoft needs to figure out are how to make a box that is not fugly and noisy like the XBOX 360.

The media center extenders were really nice but I simply don't understand why they killed them off. Now the only real media center extender is the 360 and you can hear the fan from a mile away. Not to mention the whole game console look doesn't fit into every entertainment cabinet.

Even if they just gave us Softsled I'd be happy...

The newer 360's are much quieter than the others. I have an Elite that is about 1.5 years old and bought the new MW2 360. It is much queiter than the other one.

Are you saying the ModernWarfare 2 Special Edition 360 is quieter than your 1.5Yr old Elite? I didn't know that..(as I have the 1.5Yr Old Elite as well).

Still, electronics like the 360 should be as quite as most AV components...and it is not. PS3 is quiter than my Elite, but still noisy in relation to my AV rack (though my UPS will fire up a fan now and then).

That MW2 edition have the 250GB drive too?

Yes, that is correct. I noticed that the MW2 version is one of the Jasper units as I think most new Xbox's are. My PS3 is quieter than the Xbox also, but I am very impressed with the MW2 360.

Yep, it also has the 250 GB drive which is very nice.

20 million WORLDWIDE. Not US. Also at least half only have silver accounts. Like me. Stuff like his will only be available to gold accounts.

Would Love to See My 360 Do More

I already use the heck out of my Xbox 360 playing games on Xbox Live, watching Netflix, and streaming music from Last.fm. I would love to see the Xbox 360 add additional features such as this. It's already practically the centerpiece of my home entertainment center, and any additional content that Microsoft brings to the table will only further solidify that.

Why cable isn't dead

Who owns the pipes? The cable companies and telcos. And the telcos are entering the cable TV space, like Verizon with FiOS TV and ATT with U-Verse IPTV.

Traditional cable TV isn't going anywhere. It will be supplemented by internet video sources, but cable TV isn't going nowhere.

Some of my neighbors are even on analog cable!

It may not be going anywhere, but if they plan to screw over their internet subscribers by raising rates to subsidize the TV viewers, I will happily begin subscribing to a growing number of wireless providers with high speed internet. WiMax is now peaking in the 14mbps range with 80-90ms pings. That makes it faster than my current internet, and the pings are now good enough for gaming.

I don't think they'll raise rates. What they will do (or are doing) is cap usage to make video less attractive, and also because everyone streaming video at the same time will bring the network to its knees.

Only wirleess internet in my area is Verizon 3g and that's $60 for a max speed of 700 kbps and a 5 GB monthly cap and $51.20 per GB overage. No thanks I'll pass.

Re: woooo

I'll explain for him.

Red ring of death affected as many as 50% of early xbox 360 owners, by some estimates.

The machine has been revised several times since then, and failure rates are MUCH lower (but not publicly known).

I would guess that of the 39MM xbox units sold, ~25MM are in service still.

In glinc's expert analysis, I'm certain he has full understanding of the GPU and CPU load (and subsequent thermal impact), and thus he must have inside knowledge of the codec ESPN would use to stream, the bitrates, and how much of the load is distributed between the hana, gpu, and cpu....and very quickly formulated a theoretical failure rate for us..."even more" as he puts it.

Cuban is right

quote:
"Cable guys" like HDNet CEO Mark Cuban frequently argue that Internet video will simply never replace cable TV
Internet-based video delivery is about 4 legitimate and 1 questionable thing:

1) Time shifting (watch what I want, when I want it)
2) Place shifting (same as #1, but not primary viewing location)
3) Archived Content (watch past episodes / missed recordings)
4) Niche content (Limited distribution, ie: Revision3)
Questionable) "Free" programming

Tme shifting is by far the largest driver towards Internet-based delivery, and it also represents the most inefficient use of network resources. You're taking content that is already being digitally delivered to your house via OTA ATSC feeds, cable QAM feeds, and satellite QPSK/8PSK feeds.... and transferring yet another copy of the same content over the network. Time shifting is better accomplished through local capture and playback using an already established stream as the source.

As for "free" programming -- Disney currently gets approximately $3.65/mo in subscriber fees from 100.7 million viewers thanks to forced channel subscription packages that won't let viewers opt-out of channels. Is anyone really naive enough to believe that ESPN is going to make a move that threatens their $4.4 billion a year money train? The executives that run these companies are stupid, but not that stupid. Expect to see services like this as a companion offering to already existing subscription packages.

Internet-based video has a huge future, but not as a replacement technology.

Online video streaming

Indeed the move brings video gaming consoles closer to what tv cable providers are offering. I assume that tv cable will not be replaced by online tv so fast but the trend is ascendent. ESPN on Xbox can expand Microsoft's potential clients if we read the numbers: 39 million Xbox users who may sign up for the service. You can read this article for additional information: »www.thehdstandard.com/hardwareso···on-xbox/
