If MS buys Claria, they may just be doing it to get the client contracts. They could then use any software they want to place ads on web pages. Even MS realizes that there is a LOT OF MONEY to be made in ads on the internet. And ads are NOT going away. Hopefully they are only made available in an upfront honest way and not placed on the computer thru subterfuge. God knows there are enough people who will approve ad generating software on their systems without tricking them into it. I won't be one of them, but there are plenty of people who will agree to anything to get some software for free.

| | Microsoft is Going the Way of the Dodo Why else would they buy a scumbag outfit like Claria? They might as well buy 180solutions while they're at it. And I thought Microsoft's reputation couldn't get any worse... I guess I was wrong. | |

Anyway's Microsoft shouldn't need claria, they if wanted could program their own spyware into windows and probably be able to get away with it/open Windows up to more infections.
I don't think theyre going to buy them then use the software... Or it's back to 100% mac os/linux for me!

How is this running things into the ground?

Then companies will sprout up bearing the worst adware you can imagine with the sole purpose to be bought out (and shut down) by Microsoft. It will turn into a nice way to make a few million dollars relatively quickly.
I'm still scratching my head over this one, but I don't think Microsoft would plan on buying Claria just to shut it down. Then again, have we heard anything besides rumors on this? It could all be one big unfounded rumor that just got passed around one too many times. -- -Jason Levine http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/ http://www.PCQandA.com/ http://www.urateit.com/

I love all these people that think Microsoft is going to start bundling spyware with their products. Comon, use your common sence. They have other reasons for doing what they are doing, but we wont find out till it is all done. So give it a rest and stop spiting bullshit. -- inc.ath.cx Have a Networking problem or question? They wouldn't be soo dumb to add spyware, and for what reason? Money??? Believe me, they have plenty of it. And I dont think they are that dumb to even consider that. They would lose no less than 60% of windows users to other OS's if they made that move. I would be one of them. -- inc.ath.cx Have a Networking problem or question? | | | | | | I dunno. Think about it. Windows is being used in over 90% of all computers in the world. It doesn't matter how much a company makes because they will always want to find ways to make more money since that's why stockholders invest in a company. Even if it was known that Microsoft has spyware in their machines how many of those 90%+ computers are going to switch to something else after they have gotten so used to Windows and how it works?
After all most spyware just looks at where you go online in order to send you advertising tailored to your apparent interests. Microsoft might see this as a cash cow in advertising. It's not much further from when they were loading up Windows 98' with various ISP offerings and links to specific commercial web sites. All Microsoft has to do is have a press conference telling everybody how their new "innovation" increases your "Internet experience" by having the web tailored to your interests.

1 edit | I can see it now... Just imagining a world where Microsoft releases two versions of their software: 1) The full, paid for software with no included ads. 2) The free software with ads (ad-supported, showing a banner or something wherever you go).
Go figure. | |
