Microsoft lists Vista minimum requirements
by Stooges Fan Friday 19-May-2006
May 18, 2006 (IDG News Service) -- Microsoft Corp. launched a Web site outlining the minimum hardware requirements for the next version of the Windows OS, Windows Vista.

The move comes less than a week before the company will host its Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Seattle. At the show, which kicks off Tuesday, Microsoft and hardware manufacturers are expected to show how Vista will run on a variety of machines, as well as showcase add-on technology built to enhance the OS.

On the Microsoft "Get Ready" Web site, the company outlined the requirements for running both low-end versions of Vista or higher-end versions that take advantage of the OS's new Aero graphical user interface capabilities.

The company differentiates between the two by calling the former a "Windows Vista Capable PC" and the latter a "Windows Vista Premium Ready PC."

Specs are understated for Vista

Minimum for a Vista Capable PC is a Modern 800mhz processor, with at least 512mb of RAM. For Ultimate it is 1Ghz Processor, and 1GB RAM, with 128kb of Video for Aero. Now double that to be compliant with your machine not huffing to run Vista.

Has nothing to do with bloat. It has to do with Hardware manufacturers needing sales. Linux has the same specs for their newer distributions, so it has nothing to do with OS or Software bloat.

Re: Specs are understated for Vista

Think what you want, but even Linux can be made to run on an older system that is not spec'd out for the OS if you trim it down to the point that you have crippled it, such as people do with XP to get it to run on a older system that is out of date.

Sorry, but anyone that cannot afford a 1.2ghz or better system needs to realize that you can even get a baseline 2.xghz system for under $500.00 nowdays (eMachines has a system for under $400.00 that is over 2.4ghz, and loaded).

Vista could possibly be made to run on a sub-par 800mhz or lower if you trim it down to the point that it will do nothing more then boot and crawl to get on the Internet, but that is not what the OS was created for.

That is being discussed in the Beta thread. Most likely there are some changes being done, and we will probably see a different version of the beta in the next week or so.
