Minneapolis Wi-Fi Network Stuck At 82% Complete
Run in with Minny Parks & Recreation board stalls project
by Karl Bode Friday 26-Dec-2008 tags: business · wireless · alternatives
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Minneapolis citywide Wi-Fi network is stuck at 82% completion. The privately owned, anchor tenanted network appears to have run into some opposition from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, who won't allow the project developers to mount access points on and around park property. According to the Board, The city and US Internet of Minnetonka, the builder of the network, didn't follow proper channels when attempting to get approval for the network.

Higher ups

This is when the Mayor and the city council needs to step in and overrule the board. If the board has that much power that's a black eye to Minneapolis. It's like the PTA overruling the school for putting up lights in the hallways because they were not consulted.

Theses people need to be told the take a hike and if they don't like it disband them and start fresh. If this had been a private concern doing this work for profit then that's a different situation. This is a city funded project they are just the contractors and service people for the network.

Green space

Does the Park & Rec Board really control 18% of the green space in the Minneapolis area? That 18% seems high but I'm not from the area so I donno.

Re: Green space

I'm not sure if its a full 18% but your never more than a half mile away from a park in mpls. I'm pretty sure we have the highest % of parks for cities over 150000 people or something.

So far i've been pretty happy with the network, its no wimax but it's nice to be able to grab some directions or movie times when your out.

I've hit ap's 2-3 blocks away (and they usualy have them every other street) with just a little 6 db directional and easily pull 5mb+ on the 3mb package. The routers they sell are pretty good they have a RP-SMA port for an external antenna and are pretty user friendly when it comes to set up and troubleshooting.

Not everyone is going to be able too have a great signal but if you can get line of sight you should be able to get a nice yagi and just mount it and be done with it.

p.s. it says redwing.net because i'm down at the in-laws.

Park and Rec

The article makes it sound like the Park and Rec board took some action to block the installation of the wireless equipment. They did not, they already had policies in place which preclude the installation. No one at the City or USI bothered to check for permitting or to consult the Park board. Now the city and USI are pushing the park board to make a contract with USI in a hurry.
This is an over-site in planning, at the first moment they considered installing equipment in the parks, they should have engaged the Park Board.
The wireless is doing fine without the rest of the covereage, but to complete the project to its goal, they parties involved will have to work something out. In addition to the installation of 42 more Wireless Access Points, a lot of those light poles will also have to be replaced in order to be strong enough for the equipment.

Delays?

This project was supposed to be done a year ago. We just got the service in my area in the last month or two.
