After ISPs essentially ignored them completely, Minnesota regulators have given up on their attempt to force broadband ISPs to block access to gambling websites. In exchange for backing off their filter efforts, The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association has scrapped a lawsuit against the state filed shortly after the plan was announced. Minnesota regulators seemed unaware that they were trying to force carriers to adhere to "common carrier" regulations that don't apply to modern broadband ISPs (or the offshore gambling outfits), or that broadband users probably would have quickly found ways around the filters anyway.

Locks are for honest people

Despite the fact that this ban was asinine from the start, it will only stop the very casual gambler. The rest of people would use proxies, VPNs or encrypted tunnels.

It hasn't stopped the Feds. They just froze the money in 3 banks that are used to pay money to online gambling winners.
An advocacy group for online poker said Tuesday that the federal government has frozen more than $30 million in the accounts of payment processors that handle the winnings of thousands of online poker players.

The Justice Department has long maintained that Internet gambling is illegal, a view that the poker group challenges.

The Poker Players Alliance told The Associated Press that the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York instructed three banks to freeze the accounts.

Arlo Devlin-Brown, the assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York....asks that the bank treat the funds "as legally seized" by the FBI, saying that the government has probable cause that the gambling payments of U.S. residents had been directed to offshore illegal Internet gambling businesses.
There are many ways to get around the access to online gambling systems. But there are much fewer ways to get around the money trail. The Feds have found the weak point in the war against online gambling.--

You Betcha!

After reading a bit more into this whole ISP gambling ban agenda, it seems that it all comes down to money, as usual. The morality factor is nothing more than a front to gather support. This is all about the government trying to get as much money as they can from the people, and not about protecting Minnesotans from sin. Although, if they allow Brett Favre to be the QB for the Vikings this season, we might have to reevaluate the idea that they need cleansing of some sort.

• Gambling is a regressive source of revenue.

• The negative social consequences of gambling fall more heavily on low income people than on the wealthy.

• Social costs appear to outweigh the economic benefits, so gambling cannot be justified as a form of economic development.

• State revenue from gambling is unreliable because the amount fluctuates.

• It is difficult for taxpayers to hold state government accountable for gambling revenues, as they can for tax revenues .

The second part of this sentence made me giggle.

That bullet must have slipped passed the editor.

"It is difficult for taxpayers to hold state government accountable for gambling revenues, as they can for or tax revenues."

You *can* win

This goes to show you that if enough people stand up against the big guy, they little people can win.

If only more people would realize this, we'd be so much better off.

So much for the home of the "free.."

Yeah, You-bet'cha...

So much for the home of the free. So many of the state and federal laws go against the very tenant of freedom and liberty it's laughable.

If people want to "game" then the only thing the government should care (and regulate) is if anyone is cheating or not. Beyond that it's an affront.
