Already having launched a 10 Gbps fiber to the home service ($400 a month) at the tail end of last year, Minnesota-based US Internet (see our user reviews) says it will soon be launching new 2.5 and 5 Gbps broadband tiers sometime in the first quarter of 2016. Granted there's not much you can do with 2.5 and 5 Gbps that you couldn't do with 1 Gbps, which already is more speed than any conceivable consumer-grade service could utilize.

More than a few companies note that while anything at 1 Gbps or higher isn't even technically usable, the marketing for such speeds drives consumers (the majority of which don't actually know what speed they have) to call in and see if it's time to upgrade).

In US Internet's case, its 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps and 10 Gbps tiers will be priced at $65 a month, $100 a month, $200 a month and $400 a month, respectively. The company says there's a $99 installation fee for any fiber service, though the company's website makes no mention of any usage caps.

"Our top local goal is to connect with the community and make the City of Minneapolis the most connected city in the United States," said the company in a statement.
