Misleading iPhone 3G Speed Ad Banned
Apple: Ads 'relative rather than absolute in nature'

Apple has been pretty soundly criticized for a series of worldwide ads (see this one from the UK) that are a little too generous in demonstrating the speed of the networks the iPhones are running on. In the U.S., this video comparison particularly highlights the disparity between HSDPA 3G speeds in Apple/AT&T advertising land, and in reality, where you may even be stuck on slower sub 200kbps EDGE networks. In the UK, the ads have been banned by the advertising regulator for misleading consumers. The UK's Guardian offers Apple's defense:

quote:

Apple UK said that the claims made in the ad were "relative rather than absolute in nature".
You'll have to remember that one. "Sorry honey, that lipstick on my collar is 'relative rather than absolute in nature.'" Apple does seem aware they were stretching the truth, most of the ads containing fine print highlighting the limitations of global 3G networks. According to the ASA's website, seventeen people complained about the ads, which could indicate people really weren't all that bothered, or that consumers are simply oblivious.

A report this week issued by UK regulator Ofcom reported that 55% of UK consumers were unaware of their current broadband connection speed. We're not much better in the U.S. -- a recent survey suggesting that 83% of consumers don't even know what a gigabyte is. In other words, when it comes to broadband advertising, you probably can fool most of the people, most of the time.

17 complaints is a big deal

A single phone call is comparable to thousands that won't take the time to complain.

You're correct.

I checked around and it seems it's closer to 26 more unhappy customers who do not take the time to complain.

You can look at it in two ways:

1. For every complaint you get, there are X customers who are completely happy.

2. For every complaint you get, there are X customers who are just as unhappy but have better things to do than complain.

Which is right?
Both.

Actually there is a #3 - For every complaint you get, there are X customers who are just as unhappy but don't know who to complain too or are too stupid to realize that you should complain and just think that its normal service.

Why don't people

use phones for the usual: like bitching and fighting with your husband in the grocery store on a cell because neither of you could cobble together a damn list of crap to stuff down your cake holes. I see (hear) this on almost every visit to buy groceries.

Or giggly young women talking gibberish walking to and from classes at the UNI. You can't walk and think about the last/next class? You have to call your flibbertigibbet friend to tell her "how totally awesome" something was for a total of five minutes? Technology ...

As for Apple's ads, since when did any company advertise truth?

That's the best you can do? I stood in line at Costco for 20 minutes the other day listening to the guy behind me talk to someone on the phone about his pending divorce and how his wife screwed him over financially.

How about a moron going on forever with some other moron (could be an idiot, I'm not sure - or an imbecile, for that matter) about the WWF! As if the WWF was real! No sh*t, the guy went on and on and on about how so and so was joining forces with this guy, and some tramp was going to do this to this other guy and ... my head nearly exploded.

That was a great video!

I had tears in my eyes watching it. That minute of silence after the Apple ad ended was priceless!

Storm Ad

Speaking of cell phone ad reality, in the Verizon Blackberry Storm ad, is there a reason that the guy doesn't need to press the space bar when typing the "See you at" message?

Is that some sort of predictive Blackberry thing?

Really Fast!

What's the big deal! No product is ever as good as the advertisements! How is a company supposed to sell their crap if they can't stretch the truth?

Re: Videos taken down?

They're both working now. Strangeness.

G3 speeds in general aren't impressive. Twice as fast as very slow is still quiet slow. And finding a decent signal on AT&T network around here is just about impossible. A guy that works downstairs in my office has to put his iPhone against a support column just to txts and go outside to make calls.

Business as Usual

I compare these ads to broadband providers who advertise "Unlimited Usage" and then put caps on the line, or Vonage advertising "No Contracts" and then lock you into a 2 year "agreement". Same ol' same ol'.

At least in the verizon storm ad

They state that. "The Screens are simulated" so this proves one thing, they are more truthful than APPLE. Apple lies, lawyers lie, Microsoft lies, what else is new, advertising lies to sell to stupid consumers, BBC is right in banning but local networks will not want to lose their cash cow, however if every iphone user complained to the FTC maybe just maybe that ad will be pulled.

We are living in the age of the "BIG WHITE LIE" everyone lies to get what THEY want its normal after all this country was founded by a bunch of liars. Lied to the Indians and took over the lands and about ran them all out. I'd say enough is enough.. Let the truth come out.

But
CAN YOU HANDLE THE TRUTH?

THe term "3G Speed" is misleading itself. THREE GIGS? REAL

I didn't realize the ads were called misleading because of this. I find them misleading because they talk about "3G speed" knowing DAMN well that "3g" means THREE GIGABYTE.

You hear "3G SPEED" and it's like "wow, super-fast internet. Three gigabytes!"

THen, as with diet sodas marketing with TASTE, you realize it's just hype, but not after they get your attention.

I don't think 3G is termed to mean 3 Gig.

Maybe 3rd Generation...
