Mobile Music Sales Expected to Climb Rapidly
$7 billion business expected by 2011
by KathrynV Sunday 06-Jul-2008 tags: business · wireless · stats
With the release of an increasingly large number of multimedia-capable devices, sales of mobile music are expected to increase rapidly despite a general decline in music sales. General music sales over the next three years are predicted to decline by $5 billion. However, mobile music sales are expected to climb from $1.7 billion last year to $7.3 billion by the end of 2011. Likewise, online digital music sales are expected to grow from $1.9 billion to $7.5 billion. This growth is due in part to deals like the recent agreement between Warner Music Group and Nokia to make the Warner music library available on Nokia’s wireless music service.

To hear the RIAA racketeers tell it

No one is buying music...we're all thieving pirates who should pay $20/mo music taxes and $220K fines with no proof of wrongdoing.

Ah, see you don't get the agenda.

If you come out and say "Mobile Music sales are going to grow xxxx zillion dollars by xxxx" then you've set up your argument.

Now, if sales DON'T reach the arbitrary numbers they made up (let's say 4.8 billion instead of 7.3 billion) they can scream "We lost 2.5 billion due to piracy!!" when in fact, all the numbers are made up.

Absolutely correct.

ok here may be why

It is near impossable to find a "real" record/cd/tape store. If you want music you have to go to places like Amazon,CD Baby, Tower Records online (really miss Tower Records real store). Also with things like "Pepsi Stuff" you can get DRM free mp3s, downloads increase alot. I was the type of person that would walk into a Tower Records for 3 hours in the store and spend roughly $200 on music. There are more like me out there , ohhhh well that's life.

Say What?

For this increase to happen, the equipment must get better. We have two different kinds of music-centric cell phones in our family. My kids have a Chocolate (LG VX8550) and I have the Moto Krzr K1M. Neither of them are better than an MP3 player IMHO. It's much easier to transfer songs to my MP3 players as I can just plug it in, then drag-and-drop songs to it. With the cell phones, I have to buy a special cable which is only $5 to be sure. Then I make sure the proper drivers are loaded, put it in sync mode, fire up the special program, and I forget the rest because it's been such a pain to do.

I'm sure most of you have read that Verizon is now promoting the Rhapsody service. This MAY take off, but I doubt it. So far I haven't even been able to get the program to run reliably on my Vista machine.

In order for mobile music sales to increase, I think they need to make multimedia capable phones better and easier to use.

Re: Say What?

jhacker that relly depends on the phone you have. A lot of phones have an micro sd card slot. They are now selling 8GB micro sd cards. So all they have to do is pop that baby into a card reader and transfer the songs that way. I will agree with you that cell phones are not even in the same ballpark sound quality wise as the great majority of mp3 players.

Man! You're having it rough!
No idea what your phone interface looks like, but this Motorola V3(NOT exactly an MP3 player but...) shows in it's own window(Bluetooth Information Exchanger)
Drag n drop works - even over Bluetooth.
Motorola Phone Tools makes it have a GUI.

Rhapsody on a Vista Machine? Works fine on this VAIO(Vista Home Premium).

Re: Say What?

I don't have Moto Phone Tools, but I do have BITPIM. Normally if I want music on my phone I just take the microSD card out of the phone and insert it into the card reader. I guess the point of my original post is that they have to make things easier and better for non-techies if they want to capture a bigger share of the music audience.

I haven't spent much time trying to get the Verizon/Rhapsody program to work. This is mostly because of my work schedule. So far every time I scan my library for music it crashes. Plus, it won't automatically load the proper drivers for my phone but I do know where to find them. I already had them loaded with the old VCast program and BITPIM, so I don't see why there is a problem. I just haven't been persistent enough to work out the problems yet. Maybe tomorrow when I FINALLY have a day off work.

I also have a question. Can you use the Verizon/Rhapsody subscription service with your MP3 players also, or do you have to hold a separate Rhapsody subscription for that?

Why?

Why are people bothering with music on mobiles now? I really don't see the point when a phone is supposed to be a PHONE, not an all-in-one media device. I have custom ringtunes on my phone but that's just about it....and it's not any of the nonsense the Verizon/Sprint stores are offering..

I'll leave CD/MP3/other audio players and computers to play my music, TYVM.

Re: Why?

The question is why not?
My cell phone is already an MP3 player, internet browser, video game system and phone all in one. It's only going to get smaller and better as technology advances.

Why carry a laptop computer, PSP, Ipod and cell phone if you can get it all in one?

edit: I forgot TV.

I'm waiting for them to add Phazer, stun gun, and wormhole teleporter to the phone before I buy....

Re: Why?

I think you can get a stun gun that looks like a phone. Not sure if there is a real phone with stun capabilities. Would be convenient but probably cut battery talk time considerably.

The thing is, as you get start getting into your 40's and beyond, you'll find you simply can't SEE all the data on those little screens and buttons for all those wonderful options anymore. So their existence becomes meaningless.

You still have to be able to see both the screen and the letters on the keyboard clearly.

And when you add hand tremors into the mix....

Yeah my car has a few hundred mp3s on CD - Then again going out and buying a nice headunit IS BETTER than a phone that will only last you 4 years tops...haha.

meanwhile

parents everywhere will regret giving their kids a phone too soon.

i could kind of see it growing, esp. with ringtones, but 7.3 billion is a very optimistic jump. the main age groups doing the downloading, at least for something that gets old as fast as ringtones, are going to grow up and get bored with it. that and like digital music downloads, eventually get most/all of what you want and plateau off from constant downloads.

it'd also be interesting to see what/how much of it is from new "artists" and how much has been attributed to existing bands/acts.
