If you come out and say "Mobile Music sales are going to grow xxxx zillion dollars by xxxx" then you've set up your argument.
Now, if sales DON'T reach the arbitrary numbers they made up (let's say 4.8 billion instead of 7.3 billion) they can scream "We lost 2.5 billion due to piracy!!" when in fact, all the numbers are made up. -- "Regulatory capitalism is when companies invest in lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians, instead of plant, people, and customer service." - former FCC Chairman William Kennard (A real FCC Chairman, unlike the current Corporate Spokesperson in the job!)

hep catdo da dirdy bird join:2001-02-17 Decatur, GA | ok here may be why It is near impossable to find a "real" record/cd/tape store. If you want music you have to go to places like Amazon,CD Baby, Tower Records online (really miss Tower Records real store). Also with things like "Pepsi Stuff" you can get DRM free mp3s, downloads increase alot. I was the type of person that would walk into a Tower Records for 3 hours in the store and spend roughly $200 on music. There are more like me out there , ohhhh well that's life. -- Bowling: It's cleaner than baseball.

| | Say What? For this increase to happen, the equipment must get better. We have two different kinds of music-centric cell phones in our family. My kids have a Chocolate (LG VX8550) and I have the Moto Krzr K1M. Neither of them are better than an MP3 player IMHO. It's much easier to transfer songs to my MP3 players as I can just plug it in, then drag-and-drop songs to it. With the cell phones, I have to buy a special cable which is only $5 to be sure. Then I make sure the proper drivers are loaded, put it in sync mode, fire up the special program, and I forget the rest because it's been such a pain to do.
I'm sure most of you have read that Verizon is now promoting the Rhapsody service. This MAY take off, but I doubt it. So far I haven't even been able to get the program to run reliably on my Vista machine.
In order for mobile music sales to increase, I think they need to make multimedia capable phones better and easier to use.

They are now selling 8GB micro sd cards. So all they have to do is pop that baby into a card reader and transfer the songs that way. I will agree with you that cell phones are not even in the same ballpark sound quality wise as the great majority of mp3 players. -- Bowling: It's cleaner than baseball.

| | | | Re: Say What? I don't have Moto Phone Tools, but I do have BITPIM. Normally if I want music on my phone I just take the microSD card out of the phone and insert it into the card reader. I guess the point of my original post is that they have to make things easier and better for non-techies if they want to capture a bigger share of the music audience.
I haven't spent much time trying to get the Verizon/Rhapsody program to work. This is mostly because of my work schedule. So far every time I scan my library for music it crashes. Plus, it won't automatically load the proper drivers for my phone but I do know where to find them. I already had them loaded with the old VCast program and BITPIM, so I don't see why there is a problem. I just haven't been persistent enough to work out the problems yet. Maybe tomorrow when I FINALLY have a day off work.
I also have a question. Can you use the Verizon/Rhapsody subscription service with your MP3 players also, or do you have to hold a separate Rhapsody subscription for that?

I really don't see the point when a phone is supposed to be a PHONE, not an all-in-one media device. I have custom ringtunes on my phone but that's just about it....and it's not any of the nonsense the Verizon/Sprint stores are offering..
I'll leave CD/MP3/other audio players and computers to play my music, TYVM.

Why carry a laptop computer, PSP, Ipod and cell phone if you can get it all in one?
edit: I forgot TV. | |

i could kind of see it growing, esp. with ringtones, but 7.3 billion is a very optimistic jump. the main age groups doing the downloading, at least for something that gets old as fast as ringtones, are going to grow up and get bored with it. that and like digital music downloads, eventually get most/all of what you want and plateau off from constant downloads.
it'd also be interesting to see what/how much of it is from new "artists" and how much has been attributed to existing bands/acts.
