I would bet if the phone companies decide this a service they can make more $$$ on, it'll soon be coming to an idiot near you. People are so adicted to this stupid text BS, I dare say, typing a web address should be no problem at all.

| Re: Voice based? Agreed. Another reason I've never understood voice-dialing. I've had quite a few phones that did it and never found it any easier than speed dialing (and quite a bit more likely to make a mistake when you have a person with multiple numbers that you frequently call). | |

2 edits | I think voice prompting on cell phones has a very promising future and I see Google taking the lead on that. They've already got a voice-prompted 411 directory service, GOOG411, which not only provides a phone number, but can also send an SMS with a URL to a location on Google Maps. They just need better linkage between GOOG411 with the downloadable version of Google Maps on my cell phone, GMM, to sew things up, such as:
•ability to use GOOG411 to add a new destination to my GMM "favorites" on my cell phone with whatever new destination I was asking for
•ability for GMM to send my GPS location to GOOG411, so it can do proximity searching (right now GOOG411 is limited to proximity searches based on city name).
•ability to use Google Maps from my home PC to edit my "favorites" destinations in the GMM app in my cell phone.
•ability for GMM to give me GPS-triggered directions by voice read-out, just like GPS car-dash systems do now.
The above would satisfy 90% of my needs in using a cell phone beyond just voice calling. It frees me up from having to do any real typing on the cell phone and fully leverages the information that I need from the web. Google has all the pieces to this puzzle - it's just a matter of time before they bring it together.
P.S. I typed this using my home PC.

| A reasonable browser would help I preface this by saying I have a Windows Mobile Smartphone. The degree of "suck" is unparalled. It is not all Microsoft;s fault, but even if phone providers opened up and allowed freedom for development IMHO Microsoft Windows is not the OS to build a mobile platform. Even though there are reasonably good browsers available (i.e. Opera Mini) my telco provider will not support them. Opera Mini needs java to work; I think Microsoft also has an offering (I forget the name).
Internet connectivity on Sprint 3G is quite good. Phone technology has not yet caught up. iPhone looks promising; however no 3G or Exchange ActiveSync supports mean I will wait.

| Re: A reasonable browser would help said by raye :Phone technology has not yet caught up. As far as I can tell phone technology is fine as it is, the problem is mobile web is expensive and providers give us sucky browsers.
I can't think of any reason why my Samsung SCH-u740 can't view many of the pages I can't view; it's got a decent sized screen, a full keyboard, plenty of memory, and the thing can play video so processing power shouldn't be a problem; the problem seems to be the crappy web browser Verizon stuck me with doesn't like large pictures and copes with pretty much any error by just not displaying the page at all (rather than falling back to text). -- Mooooooo!!!

| Making Excuses to not have a full browser is lame Now the cell phone industry is trying to say that we do not need a full browser because the mobile internet will be different.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall to listen to these strategy sessions these companies have. -- Mac Chatter »www.macchatter.net

| mobile internet i have a sprint mogul (htc titan) and i use it more then i use my desktop any more. almost all sites are rendered correctly, none of them are unusable, and with evdo surfing and downloading is no problem. makes it nice to check email, check auctions or keep you busy on long trips. hopefully things will only get better for mobile internet and not follow the in the path of this article. | |

| Re: mobile internet sites are not rendered correctly on your modified hermes aka titan(not in true desktop form)...unless you are using opera mobile with desktop view and desktop computer option enabled..not to mention flash player etc with it...dont try to lie on forums sir..i owned your said phone as well as a brand new kaiser. Evdo is impressive on sprint but thats about it..it comes with wm6 with pie as default browser and we all know thats no way to browse the web...in the end iphone isnt perfect due to edge/lack of flash/inability to dl linked files etc and wm6 only real option to browse (like your desktop) is opera mobile(not mini)so i welcome a better way to browse but the ideas above dont sound great....how about more ram, more bandwidth, and a browser like the iphones with flash and streaming support thatll do for now | |

dont try to lie on forums sir..i\ lol right, an opinion is a lie, grow up. yes, the way a mobile browser will render and display a page is differnt then a desktop. is this wrong, no not always. would you rather have over lapping text and photos then a slightly rearranged display, not to mention that alot of sites are redirected by some providers proxies to mobile sites which are differnt to start with. i meant rendered correctly as in a easy to view, usable page that works, not a bunch of useless jargon because the full size page does not fit. also there is ways to make flash work within pie, and no pie isn't the greatest but it works. i have tried a good number of the 3ed party browsers and wasn't all that impressed. i do not expect my phone to be a DTR, its a PHONE, but it does a decent job of filling in as a internet ready device when i am not at home. i know it may not be the iphone, but the iphone is not by any means leaps and bounds better then alot of the newer devices out now.
