First phone for Verizon or Sprint to take full advantage of upgrades....

Both Sprint and Verizon have been upgrading their wireless broadband networks to EVDO Revision A. For Sprint, the upgrade lowered latency, and increased average downstream speeds from between 400-700kbps to 600-1400kbps, and upstream speeds from between 50-70kbps to 350-500kbps. So far, only PC card users for both companies have been able to use the upgrades, but Sprint says that's about to change with a software upgrade for the Mogul that was originally slated for late last year.

I have the original Q (Sprint) and if you go into the ##DATA# menu it gives you the option to enable Rev A. FWIW....

##DATA# [SEND] -> Advanced -> Edit -> P_REV

Default is "B 6(IS-2000)" but can be incremented to the next one. I don't have the MSL for this phone gotta call Sprint and get it tomorrow or find the paper where the service center wrote it...

Re: Other Phones

Motorola Q, Q9, Q9(c|m|h) physically do no have proper hardware to support evdo rev a.
just because interface has left/right arrows there, doesn't mean you can go any higher.

Sprint says the HTC Touch can get it too. I'm finally getting serious about replacing my landline and I'm researching the different plans and devices.

I'm split between the Mogul/Touch/Moto-Q on the SERO plan.

I had a Mogul and didn't like it. I'm a road warrior. I constantly make phone calls while on the road. I did not feel comfortable dialing and driving. I got a MotoQ and it's great.

They basically run the same os (my Q is WM5... I think the Q9 is WM6) Well Q is WM Smartphone and the others are WM PocketPC just go to a sprint store and try them out and see what you like best.

Right. Because you have a Q9 and are happy with it and do not want to replace it there's no reason to go see which phone you like best. That was more a suggestion for gaforces.

Re: Other Phones

Every time I have gone to the sprint store in the past there were lines. The reps are clueless and are just interested in selling something. They could care less what phones are best for the customer, they just want a sale of whatever is currently the top commission %.

Thanks but I'd rather find out from people who are using the phones and service.

It's About Time!

I've been waiting for this upgrade for months.

Now I'll upgrade my 6700 to the 6800 for sure.

Worth the upgrade

About two months ago I finally gave up and just bought a Sierra Wireless 595U card. Wow did it make a difference.

150ms vs the 400-500ms latency I was experiencing with my Samsung phone. Makes the $20 extra a month worth it.

Too Bad...

Too bad there's nothing posted on the HTC site for the Mogul yet.

@cox.net

Wait one sec...

Late last year, my employer provided Treo 700wx received a software upgrade when the EVDO Rev. A network in this area went live and, according to Sprint, was Rev. A capable after the update. To test this, we downloaded some large files from websites and were getting between 700 and 1200kbps. Unfortunately, due to the boss's pointless edict, I had to switch to the lovely hunk of junk called the 755p with PalmOS.

Re: Wait one sec...

The 700wx isn't capable of Rev A. There was a software update to fix bugs, but nothing with Rev A.

Yep, those in the know have had GPS and RevA on the Mogul for quite some time.

Rock and roll

SWEET! I've had my Mogul for quite a while now, and I was very disappointed when I found out it wouldn't support Rev A until an update with an expected arrival date of "sometime down the road" got released.

Now if only they could do something about the crappy WinMo 6 OS (as in, replace it with Linux)...

I have attempted to download from the link above TWICE and both times it says the file is corrupt. Does anyone have a good copy of this file? The download time is insane at 15K/s. It's kinda odd that it's not on the HTC site yet.

Re: welcome to last year Sprint.

That's exactly my thoughts. Sprint's EV-DO Rev 0 and Rev A are both widely available, across much of their network. HSDPA is mainly available in major cities only. I live about an hour west of Chicago and CDMA carriers are the only ones with high speed, all GSM carriers are stuck on EDGE.

ATT 3g Map (Please Click)
There is a reason ATT does not make a nationwide 3g map. Happy here in BFE Kansas with my Alltel EVDO.

EDIT-I have attached a nationwide map that someone on HOFO put together...It is a large file (1.5MB) but save it and zoom out a bit and it really tells the story.

That's the theoretical limit. In the real world, EVDO RevA is outperforming HSDPA. And what about that 7.2 HSDPA? If it's out there, no one is getting much over 2Mbps on the test sites.

Hats off. A nice reply without being a ahole. Unlike like the other guy living in HSPDA la la land.. Guess all that fast speed is great till you pass the city limits sign.

Yeah, they've rolled that out really fast, it's available in, what, just about all of the top 50 cities now?

They might even have it built out before it's obsoleted by LTE.

Report on How well it works

I have a Mogul, and I updated mine with this ROM today.

To say the least, it's awesome. I've definitely noticed a latency decrease and a speed increase. Also, the GPS feature is very nice (it works well with Google Maps).

Another thing it does is make "x-button" a default program...though it's a little different (and better) this time around.

overall, an excellent, excellent update.

Loving the new rom

All the features of the test 3.16 rom that leaked back in January except vastly improved. the radio is rock solid now, no more flipping between 1x and evdo like the test rom's radio. GPS does a cold fix now in about 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes like the old test rom...

I did a speedtest with my laptop using wmwifirouter and I got 1.5mb down, 450kbps up, with about 109ms latency. So about the same as the test rom.

So far I am VERY impressed.

EvDO Rev. A and official #s.

I'm still on the PPC6700 which is not a bad phone. I have been waiting for the EVDO Rev. A to come out so that I can move to the PPC6800.

Currently tethering I'm getting:

The million dollar question is, will get get better numbers with the 6800?

You'll have to get off bluetooth first, you nut. It's the BT that's limiting your speed there...

I just bricked my phone

After carefully following the directions... the application stopped and said that I didn't have the correct phone (but I do) and now my phone is stuck at a Red, Green, Blue and white screen. There is some cryptic lettering on the screen. I've tried yanking the battery to reset it and the phone knows the USB is plugged in because it says "usb" at the bottom of the phone screen when it's plugged in... but windows doesn't recognize that it's plugged in.

Problems Tethering Mogul with new Rev. A ROM Update 3.35.651

OK I am somewhat new to tethering, however I was running on the old ROM 2 ver before I upgraded last night and I was tethering over the USB cable and over Bluetooth with the greatest of ease. But when I upgraded to the new EVDO REV A. Update 3.35.651.2 it cripples my ability to tether over USB or Bluetooth. Is anyone else having this issue. It worked so great using the old ROM version...

I just downloaded and installed the latest ROM from HTC ( ......3.35.351.2...) today from HTC's website, but won't have a chance to see if I can tether from my Mac booted into Windows XP via Bootcamp. I found this thread:
