| Re: RE: Verizon FiOS, AT&T U-verse lead latest Consumer Reports said by LiamJunket :Here are triple play survey results: [att=1] Strange that Verizon Fios was rated 1st by READER SURVEY, but also rated so bad in every category of service and fees. What's so strange about that?
Historically (since GTE went to national management, Ca. 1998) Verizon has been the most expensive phone company, whether wired or wireless, but has delivered better service than its "competitors".
Today, we can get Fios, which is BAR NONE the highest quality broadband available, while the best the others can offer is about 15/2, on a shared cable. But 50/20 costs $150 a month, since no one else can touch it.
Verizon took the Powell Fiber Monopoly Grant and ran with it, like a "Greedy" telephone would be expected to. AT&T went conservative and decided profit margins were better milking the copper. ("We're the phone company, we don't care - we don't have to!"). The result is an inferior offering, with the illusion of a slightly better price.

| Why so strange? Fiber is reliable. Verizon's management is not.
In point (while I rant) explain why a communication company as big as Verizon, that has services that run 24/7 (phone, cell, internet, TV) can't support those services with 24/7 customer support (8-5pm? wtf!) Can't actually have billing that makes sense? Can't understand that the minus sign is not the plus sign (I suspect Verizon's programmer is a control freak. And one, greedy, snotty, overweight, programmer) -- Weeeeeeee!

| Microsoft made $1.5 billion from Vista incapable PCs I wonder how much they made off of the US Gov? We have been buying vista machines (I think mine is a year and half old now) for well over a year now and putting XPPro on them, now the pentagon or some other idiot group has mandated we all go to vista soonest. We have a lot of legacy software that is broken under the vista rules, so we have to buy new stuff for that, as well as pay for new licenses on all the machines that had vista to begin with (so the local admin group says, but they hate vista too, so it may be bias).
Your tax dollars at work, don't need Obama to spend more money that has not yet been printed yet, the current structure is doing just fine . -- I am not lost, I find myself every time.

| Re: Microsoft made $1.5 billion from Vista incapable PCs I may be crazy, but I have always believed that every Microsoft OS upgrade has been, in part, to help sell new hardware along with the new OS. I think that's one reason that they have these marketing arrangements with the hardware vendors. Of course, I could be wrong. It could all be just some sort of amazing coincidence. | |

| No different than when XP first started out really. My cousin still has a Dell Dimension from years back that was XP Home preloaded with only 128MB ram which is around the equivalent of 512MB for Vista. Runs, but just barely. And don't attempt to run anything but Wordpad or any other smallish app. And my old Gateway came with 256MB with xp home.
I don't know why people keep forgetting that XP was just as bad during it's infancy as Vista (well, Vista might be worse, but not these huge margins that most are claiming).
And I don't know where you're reading into the idea of a Govt. entity of mandating people use such a relatively new OS such as Vista. And I'd find it even harder to believe someone such as the pentagon would be involved with that considering the extremely strict security guidelines they have (Not saying Vista isn't secure, it's the uncertainty involved in comparison to say Win2k or XP which have been out long enough to a point they can locked down tighter than fort knox if so desired.). -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. | Re: Comcast early termination fee. I dunno, I haven't seen any of the cableco footprints out here messing with contracts/ETFs. Usually it's only been the telco/DSL providers from my experience.
Though Time Warner is now doing this price lock thing which might be introducing contracts to their business. But that is purely optional and I don't think I've seen too many other providers following a similar plan. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. | Re: Comcast early termination fee. I'm talking specifically about Comcast.. and yes, some systems in the east coast do have contracts with ETFs.. few, but they do exist on SOME of the promo offerings.
But, you are right, it's LARGELY been a telco ploy to keep customers.
Keep in mind, however, cable has changed its ways over the times. Example: They USED to bash satellite for their PPV being only in 1 room / 1 box at a time while cable was per account. Was supposed to be a great benefit. THEN cable moved to the same scheme for years, only to RECENTLY start moving back, some of them. They also talked about how you didn't have to pay any mirroring fee's for additional boxes.. and, to this day, there are still cable companies (Comcast, Charter, Mediacom to name a few) that still charge for the box rental AND a "mirror" or "gateway" fee on additional outlets bringing the fees upwards to about $13 per additional room.
So.. things do change. | |

| Re: Comcast early termination fee. Fair enough. Times change as do business practices.
And yeah, Time Warner's recent 'price lock' is essentially the same where you get the promo price (or something lower, I forget) for like 2 years under contract. But it is purely optional and for new customers only IIRC. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. | Microsoft made $1.5 billion from Vista incapable PCs And how much more they are taking in from the $50 Extra fee if you want a Pre-install of XP with Vista? (Or the $50 Extra fee to remove Vista for XP Pro...depending on how you look at it)
"Hey Bill and Steve, what should we do with all these millions of copies of XP Pro we thought we were gonna sell to China? You know the 999 million copies?" "Hmmm, well since the anti-piracy feature in XP isn't working, lets charge extra for this when folks realize our Vista sucks!" "Wow, you guys are the best!" -- Weeeeeeee!

...but still very valid.
There seems to be a flood of people here bashing cable for marketing but rarely ever those pushing phone into the same corner for doing the same.
Verizon's ads are deplorable and if I were in charge at sprint, I'd go ahead and launch a law suit against Verizon anyway. Why not? Play the same games they do.
The law suit would be rather cheap compared to a national market buy. The press would pay 10-fold to Sprint/Nextel in attention to the product, and, at the same time, would also do some part to embarrass Verizon's, to be honest, crappy push to talk service that they should NOT be proud of.
I was going to post on this last night but didn't have time. Personally, the ad SHOULD go.. its worse than the fight between TWC and Verizon FiOS. I say its worse becuase Verizon is out and out pronouncing a product dead.. like or love your competition, you don't slander them in public and I find this ad slanderous. The fact they used the yellow and black phone, a NexTel icon, they might as well had said "Nextel".. They are basically saying that this company is dying and on its way out which is just not where you want to go as a competing business. It's not even true.. people called DirecTV dead years ago becuase it reached its potential and cable had more to offer.. but they never called Satellite DEAD. There is something called decorum.
Push your ads based on price comparison and savings.. push your ads on YOUR reliability.. push your ads based on excitement to your own product and superiority over others.. but NEVER call your competition basically "Dead" which is far from true.
VZ should reconsider and pull back.
