| Re: 'Essentials Broadband' Service Capped at 5 GB Monthly for $5 I'd say so. In December, they actually boosted the speeds of the two lowest plans they have, Basic and Lite, from 768kbps/128kbps and 1.5Mbps/384kbps respectively, to 1Mbps/1Mbps and 3Mbps/1Mbps respectively. They didn't say in the article whether or not this was also being applied in Buffalo, but I know of a few people who use those packages who would not be pleased with the data allowance. | |

But for TW, it locks in an opportunity to make an additional $25 more a month in overages. According to TWC, you can switch back and forth between the limited and unlimited plans as many times as you want. So, at least for the time being, there is no "locking in". They also give you 60 days of a grace period before you get hit with overages.
The more interesting part, to me, is that they're promising to continue offering unlimited internet. They even admit that they've been profitable doing so.
While that is great to hear, I have to wonder where they plan to take this. Seems like way too much complexity to save a few people $5 and possibly charge them an additional $20 if they're not paying attention to their usage (overages are capped at $25).
This would make more sense if low cost packages were stuck with tiering, while the more expensive packages had the unlimited "feature". That would force heavy users out of the cheap tiers, which seems fair enough to me.

For the rest of us, TWC has higher-tier plans. And TW is only offering her a $5 discount which is why it's fail. If she so happens to go over she can be charged up to $25 a month. Being that granny probably doesn't know a gigabyte from a dog bite that could easilly happen.
Also just leaving the PC on like I do 24/7 can use a few GB a month in upload not to mention auto-updates from MS.
I says 15 GB cap, $15 discount and $1 per 5 GB over not $1 per 1 GB over

| There is nothing wrong with the concept, only the detail.
When they initially offered UBB last year, it was a $15 package, before the peanut gallery of "consumer activists" shouted them down.
If it were a cheap base package, i.e. $15 for 1GB, plus $1/GB, that would sell like hotcakes.

| Meters are Step 1 What concerns me the most is that TWC in order to introduce this brings in meters.
That's how it starts. Ask the Suddenlink crowd. I tried telling them caps were coming, and they got even worse than that.
A $5 savings for a 5GB cap is just a total joke. 5GB is nothing. Absolutely nothing. And they're imposing overages.
The people who are going to be told they should choose to cap have no idea of bandwidth limitations and what they're actually getting. This is just predatory, not helping anyone.
| | | | Re: Meters are Step 1 Yeah, their last attempt at a tier-pricing plan was pitiful too. Definitely shows how crazy the thinking is at these ISPs. | |

| | Re: New Samsung Galaxdetails leaked online Even if it's just a rumor, I'd want one instead of Galaxy Nexus even though I still want a pure Google experience. I could root S III if I could and just install a stock ROM in there and only if I can find one that's compatible with S III. Once that's successful, I'd just be glad I have held out in getting Galaxy Nexus.
Mind you, changes and improvements in technology is fast. Bet I won't see prices of Galaxy line of phones go down, huh?

I'm in heaven with VoIP except for 3G wireless.
| | | | Re: New Samsung Galaxdetails leaked online said by GraysonPeddi:A 4.8" is great for the visually impaired. as a legally blind person whos mom is also legally blind, what would be greater would be text to speach, got a couple samsung solstice II's, the screens nice, but even with a 10X mag she cant see caller i.d. data fast enough to tell if she should answer or not, texting takes her forever to read.
sad thing is, it has "voice recognition" yeah, except, you have to go in and turn it on to use it, every time, and i do mean every freaking time. talkd to them (samsung) about it, theres apparantly no way to have that on automatically, nore is their a way to make it one button push, and honestly the impression i got from them was they really didnt care.
and that ticks me OFF. finding standard "dumb" phones is freaking difficult, especially for flip phones. the only one i found at the time i was debating about these, was the samsung rugby II, at $100.00.. a bit much just to get a phone we can "feel"
there frankly making it harder and harder for those of us with severe vision problems to even USE a phone any more. at least with landline we could get special services to help us out, as far as im aware att offers no such services for cell's
what i would LOVE to have is cheap data and no freaking monthly bill for GPS, they have no idea how much of a help GPS would be for finding our way to stores instead of us having to call up and ask them for directions, and not normal directions either, i mean "think like you cant see signs" kind of directions. at least some of the app's ive seen have "walking gps directions"
i just wish some genius at att would figure that out and figure out how much of a good PR move that would be. but alas, itl never happen. i mean come on, its att...
note: both of us have 20/400 vision, farsighted, nearsighted, and color blind.
| | | | | | | | | Re: New Samsung Galaxdetails leaked online no i havent, thanks for that. now if only att would get rid of mandatory data for smartphones, or lower the costs
really all mom needs is talking caller i.d. , talking txt messages, and maybe a GPS app. thats really it, we wouldnt use all the other features of those phones.

| The flood gates are opening... This "optional UBB" scheme is scary, seriously. I have two choices here, AT&T and TWC. I hope, that this doesn't set a precedent for UBB to be industry standard.
Do not rationalize this; if we let this happen, and TWC gets a taste of the overage dough, I am afraid that UBB wil move from optional to mandatory.
Just look at our Canadian friends, they may have options, but one day we may be right there with them, clinging to IISPs for unlimited pricing.
I don't like this. At all. Call it fear mongering all you want, but logically this move will only go in one direction. -- Do or do not, there is no try! - Yoda
