Gotta love modern patents.

I think maybe I should patent "The process of evacuating solid waste from the human body"

That way I can get a license fee every time someone takes a shit.

Yet there being a patent on this emoticon thing does not surprise me at all. Because rounded edges and sliding to unlock and using icons is also seemingly valid to patent.

Surprised nobody has patented the act of posting on the internet yet and then tried to sue every single website with forums.

Sprint to go bankrupt within the next few years?

The article is very unprofessional written with one big paragraph in mind and in some sentences, there's no space after a period. It's like I'm reading the sentence until I encounter a period and space and not realize there is a period which is read as space between two words. If there isn't a copyright notice below the article, I could easily publish and rewrite it here for anyone to easily read it.

RE: Aereo likely to lose suit by networks

Not actually much of a leap by Moody's Investors Service to figure that Aereo will lose.

Moody's said Aereo is "unlikely" to succeed in the wake of the legal action. The firm added, however, that if Aereo could figure out a model that "more passively" delivered TV signals to viewers -- one that wouldn't involve rights licensing -- the service could disrupt the pattern of rising fees paid by cable operators to programmers.

Microsoft Said to Finish Windows 8 in Summer...

Is it just me, or does MS remind anyone else of a little kid who starts something, gets halfway finished and then drops whatever he's doing to go start something else?

Instead of sticking with one version and patching all the bugs, they release a whole new version, with a whole new crop of bugs that will only ever be about 75% fixed before they release the NEXT version. And so on, and so on...

An operating system used to be something you needed in order to be able to run other programs. Updates were usually incremental to fix bugs. Now, MS has turned the idea of an OS into the star of the show, the bit of software that everything else revolves around. They want it to be the center of everyone's (computer) world, and everything else is secondary.

I know two people with Windows 7 and they have tons of problems with it. Confusion over the changes to the UI, old programs that will no longer work, etc. I've heard that Windows 8 is an even bigger pain in the ass.

Re: Microsoft Said to Finish Windows 8 in Summer...

A) MS wants those tablet sales, windows 7 just doesn't have the right interface to do good in a tablet.

B) Windows 8 has better security. For example it not only offers a firewall but anti virus too.

C) Just like when we went from 16 bit computing to 32 bit computing we had software that was not compatible. The fact is 16 bit software will NOT run on a 64 bit OS, people just have to face the facts and get software that works.

D) There is no such thing as being 75% fixed then they release a new version, holes and bugs will be found forever it just the fact.

I do agree, the metro interface will be hard to adapt to, thats the reason I installed the Consumer Preview of Win 8 in VMware so I can have the opportunity to try it out before I buy. Ill probably wait 6 months to a year before I go to Windows 8 just because I like 7. I wasn't expecting Windows 8 till end of the year to early next year I hope MS doesn't rush it.

I thought the metro interface could be turned off?

From what I understand it can. I read posts where people tested the Developers preview on a domain environment and metro is turned off by default if windows is on a domain.

Are you really going to trust any security software from MS? After years of good third party firewall software being available, they included a firewall with XP that was virtually useless. Any program could just add itself to the list of exceptions without the user's knowledge, or approval.

Yes, because it's not like anyone has any significant amount of money invested in their software collection, nor would anyone have a reason to want to still be able to run old programs/games...

Also a fact that if you're devoting a significant portion of your company to working on a different product, you're not exactly giving the current product the attention it deserves.

In a few years, the time between Windows versions will likely be down to a year or less. MS's entire business model depends on people re-buying the same product over and over.

How many times do you see apple fixing bugs on ios 4? Snow Leopard? Or how about older versions of Android?

And they are supporting an OS that was released in 2001 (Xp) until 2014. No other company does that for OS releases.

So I don't know what you are rambling about.

has MS ever actually built a new OS yet?

by new I mean no recycled code and a truly new OS from the ground up. No legacy support just a plain new OS.

I know it would be a poor seller but at some point a company has to put its foot down and stop holding onto the old crowd.

Apple pulls this off mainly because they also design the computers, they do not have to fear someone trying to install OSX on some oddball machine with something like a crap network card someone got for $10 from radio shack.

MS is stuck with people expecting their OS to work on everything from the latest most shiny new PC with top end parts to something hobbled together from spare parts from the basement.

Good point. A lot of people were bitching about no Legacy support for the ARM version of the OS. Well the fact of the matter is you have to go with the times and Upgrade.

Windows 8 isn't really a new OS, it's a radical redesign of basic function, but not a new OS...

The new OS's that Microsoft wrote were...

Windows 1.0
Windows 95
Windows NT
Windows Vista

That I know of at least..

Re: Microsoft Said to Finish Windows 8 in Summer...

By that list, you should include Windows CE and WinPhone 7.

However, IMO Vista isn't a new OS. NT is inside. Was Windows 1.0 an operating system? I thought they called an "environment" since it sat on top of DOS.

Re: Microsoft Said to Finish Windows 8 in Summer...

From what I understand they rewrote the os from the ground up for vista, and that's why their was a lot of incompatibility with xp. I could be wrong though

Re: Microsoft Said to Finish Windows 8 in Summer...

You are right. I did some quick searches and that seems to be what is said of Vista. I guess it doesn't seem like it would be a total rewrite since it still runs old Windows programs. The Win API is obviously still there and it seems daunting to hand developers the API specs and say rewrite all of these. If they started at the ground up, perhaps they rewrote the RING 0 stuff and then reworked the API to sit on top of a new core. Maybe they rewrote everything but man, that seems like huge undertaking.

I guess it could explain why Vista was sluggish, Win 7 is better and Win 8 is faster yet.

Emoticon Button Prior Art

I recall that AOL Instant Messenger has had a button to let you make Smilies for quite some time. Definitely since before 2005.

If this patent is upheld, are those emoticons on the side of the BBR posting window a violation of this patent?

LTE Hotspots

This sounds like an advertisement for mobile hotspot manufacturers. Some of the points make sense but why do I want two devices and two plans? Then I noticed that the author worked for a company that made wireless gear. Hmmm...

Re: LTE Hotspots

I purchased a prepaid t-mobile hotspot for a trip up north recently, it was useful on the r0ad, but I did not recharge it afterwards because of too much $$$ for limited value.

And keeping around for daily use is by FAR too EXPENSIVE. I.E. $50 for 3GB.

Meanwhile my slightly slower 14Mbps HSPA+ android verses 22 Mbps hotspot gets me 5GB -4G and 2G after+100 minutes of phone service+unlimited sms that for 30$.

So this will be a no go for daily use. until Wireless Co's can learn to price the service within reason..

Survival of the fittest?

Seems like the 28 households of Darwin, California, are failing to thrive.

If you look at Google satellite photos, you can see that the entire town could be painted by one or two wireless routers. T-1 service is available.

They don't suffer for lack of capability - they're unwilling to pay the overhead.
