RIP WebTV

It served me well from December 1997 to mid 2000. I went through hell and back with that machine, saw many great web pages and made many friends in the Talk City chatrooms.

If I had known about DSLR back then, WebTV would've been what I used to originally join the site back in 1999.

After 16 years, the lights on WebTV get turned off this September 30th. It had a great run.

RIP WebTV

It served me well from December 1997 to mid 2000. I went through hell and back with that machine, saw many great web pages and made many friends in the Talk City chatrooms.

I remember that there used to be a couple WebTV users in one of the binary Usenet newsgroups I followed. They were always complaining about people who posted large videos in Rar/Par format because they couldn't view them.

One of them actually thought that the newsgroups were set up and run by Microsoft for WebTV and he couldn't understand why people would post incompatible files to it.

Then one day I saw 2-3 WebTV users talking amongst themselves and saying that all the "jerks" must have left because nobody was posting any files any more. Since the group was very much still active, I guess MS stopped fetching outside messages, while still sending out any messages posted to its servers.
