Just make up what ever suits you story...

"the city sits in the middle of Tornado Alley"

What? I've lived here my entire life and Chattanooga has never been in "Tornado Alley".

The way the Smart Grid does not work the way the author says it does either. They didn't build it just for the VW plant and it's not so precise that it's controlled street by street. If there is a fault the power goes out in much larger chunks than just a single street.

I wish these people would do a little more research when they write technical articles. The guy that wrote this fluff piece is clueless.

Cool, dry air from Montana? Not this year! It's hot as hell outside and has been for weeks.

to be fair a lot of technical weather folks feel it should be...they even gave it own name...Dixie Alley

"Dixie Alley has nearly the same number tornadoes ranked F-3 or higher as Tornado Alley but there are more tornado deaths in Dixie Alley."

There is such a very loose un-verified definition of what tornado alley even is to be able to report on.

some of the largest super outbreaks of tornado's included much of TN.

Re: Just make up what ever suits you story...

I'm glad they're rare out west. Here in Mendocino County in Northwestern California, for example, the last tornado was in 1958, and it was a F0. I saw one while living in Pocatello in Southeastern Idaho from 90-97, it was just east in American Falls and the only damage was a mangled tool shed, I could see it from our place on the West Bench (Highland High area).

We had one here in Billings on Father's Day in 2010. Ripped the roof off MetraPark.

The last tornado to hit Billings was back in the late 50's.

But only one super outbreak has occurred (2011) in my life time (40+ years) and we're not in the orange or worse area on that map. The author of that story is just making shit up. Hell he can't even find picture of Chattanooga for the story?

Google Fiber

It also managed to get Verizon to flip the switch on gigabit on their massive FiOS network, and after a lot of foot-dragging, now has by far the largest gigabit fiber network in the US.

GF won while failing.

GF went well beyond some of the original stated purposes of the experiment. But they also failed to meet some of those stated purposes. GF fibered up a lot of KCKS and KCMO, but they failed to just fiber up some areas due to failures of those areas to.meet sales goals. When you say one of your goals is to ubiquitously deploy FTTH for an entire city, you do that, even if you do not meet sales goals on every area. When you say that small businesses being part of the FTTH experiment is important in order for the results to be valid, you do not fail to have business FTTH plans ready for sale at the same time your residential plans are ready for sale.

One big benefit of GF has been forcing cities to properly map utilities and properties. Another benefit has been pushing cities to streamline permitting. Both of those actions can help other builders of anything.

Re: GF won while failing.

It pushed att to speed up their fiber projects in Charlotte and Raleigh area. The best thing would be for counties to contract total fiber builds and lease the fibers to any company that can provide the content or internet connection. Having ATT and GF fiber both building a fiber run down the same street is a big waste of money.

Re: GF won while failing.

You mean it forced AT&T to HAVE fiber projects in CLT and RDU. Without Google, there would be zero feet of fiber in either city. They can appear to move faster because they already have infrastructure, right of way, easements, and detailed maps of the area. They don't have to file for permits to hang things from poles (or to place poles), they just do it.
