More And More Consumers Skipping TV, Going Broadband Only Monday Dec 15 2014 17:43 EDT The number of consumers that are skipping cable TV and only ordering broadband services from their ISP is accelerating, according to a new study by Marchex. In a survey of 500 customers of large ISPs, the company found that 27% are now ordering just broadband from their provider, while just 22% now order just television services. Sports -- specifically and especially ESPN -- continues to be the biggest thing keeping consumers from cutting the cord. 40% ask their provider about only buying for specific channels, suggesting that the interest in a la carte remains strong. The survey also notes that consumers are unsurprisingly interested in high-value promotional bundles, but are increasingly turned off by long-term contracts. "Cable companies are coming face-to-face with the threat of disruption. Our data shows that providers need to start addressing pressing consumer demands; otherwise, they risk losing real market share when people decide to cut the cord for good," stated Marchex Director of Analytics for Marchex. |

If TV were what it was back in the late 90s/early 2000s......I'd happily pay for it. I liked a lot of what was on History Channel and Discovery Channel when they still showed documentaries and had good series like Modern Marvels. Today we have shit like Ice Road Truckers, Swamp People, Pawn Stars (and now other shows with titles that play on the word porn - are History Channels producers a classroom of 12 year olds?), etc. TLC - formerly The Learning Channel - actually had some good content as well. Now it's one long circus - literally. There are shows about 600lb people, families with 19 kids, a family of midgets, and other crap like that, as well as shows where you can actively have your wedding judged. That's just what I want when I'm making eternal vows to someone - to have it judged by two or three assholes directly, as well as the rest of the country indirectly. I'll stop here, but I could go on.

I would happily loose the ......SPORTS content and COST from my bill. I enjoyed the Seahawks game, but I could live without it. 90% of my "TV" watching is because it IS live/near realtime or local. (both is better)
I separate "Video watching"(entertainment) from "TV" (news and local events)
