AP dishes out Fios love...
(old news - 09:14AM Tuesday Jun 13 2006)
tags: Fiber · telco
Another loving tale of Verizon Fios adoration, today from the Associated Press, which focuses on a Massapequa Park, New York family that pays Verizon $220 a month for TV, phone, high-speed Internet service and two cell phones. As we've noted the report explores how investors aren't happy with the costs and lack of immediate returns from Fios, but customers (who can get it) are pleased with the service. "Customer reports [complaints] have dropped by a factor of four or five when we've replaced the copper with fiber," says a Verizon networking exec in the piece.

Stupid investors....

Instead of long term growth and stability, they want next day profits and roller coaster prices.

Obviously your not an investor. Investors want a quick return on their money so they can cash in and re-invest in another stock to make more money. The days of investing in a company for life are long gone.

Gotta love locust economics. It's why this country is being driven down the tubes: mortgaging the future for short term payoff.

I presume from that statement that you, and others on this board, pay cash for everything and have no debt whatsoever...that you keep a clean personal balance sheet....I mean, if you didn't and used credit cards on a regular basis...why, that would make you a hypocrite and that can't possibly be the case now could it?

Personal spending habits have far different impacts than investment habits/demands do. Me having or not having credit card, mortgage or other debt does not cause companies to forego long-term investments to meet the quarter-to-quarter demands of investors.

Re: Stupid investors....

Personal spending habits have _everything_ to do with investment habits/demand....it's obvious you don't have even the slightest notion of how a modern economy works - it's pretty evident by this thread that you aren't alone in this either.

Re: Stupid investors....

FerricOxide pay him no attention he's just another excited kiddie that has just discovered he can become a PHD by reading wikipedia. WTF do credit cards, etc... have to do with investors pushing companies to forgo future planning (screwing the company and the investor 5 years into the future) in favor of short term rises in profit. These profit rises aren't real as the company didn't have a right to spend that money in the first place. It's kind of like a human saying he is saving money by not buying food and starving himself/herself.

You action and your boasts say that you think you know something significant. Well: let's hear it. What great secret to the economy do you actually know. Please help enlighten those of us who are apparently so in the dark.

You my friend need to reed the book THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR! That is not in fact how the rich get richer on a broad scale.
The rich get richer because they have a long term vision and have the ability to deny themselves immediate gratification for a long term return.

Sure they will... When that becomes the all encompassing footprint of one large monopolistice telco called AT&T in about the next 5 years..

VZ isnt buying ATT, if anything ATT will buy VZ, and ATT never spends capitol. ATT buys VZ end of fios and investors will love fios ending and being fed fruity IPTV lines.

Re: Stupid investors....

AT&T is in poverty compared to Verizon even if Verizon spends tons of cash on FIOS there is no way AT&T will ever be in a position to buy them. Give FIOS 1 year after major city MDU deployment and then talk.

I guess it is sort of a fluff piece. I can't get FIOS myself, but it's still a good thing, not so much because of features but because it represents real competition for the cable co's, at least in the large urban markets. But, uncompressed HD content and good bandwidth are always a plus.

In the meantime, can we non-fios people get 20/1 ADSL2+ like the french have please?

when 60% or more of average internet users don't know what a firewall is, I really doubt they'll know about or love FIOS.

FIOS should get love

My parents recently got FIOS and I was blown away by the speed. But what really threw me for a loop was that they were paying less than I was paying to Comcast for less than half the speed. Too bad FIOS will never arrive in my area.

Gotta give them props

I agree that they should be given props for sticking their head out there and doing something different. The amazing thing is that while Cable & old Telephone companies are working with outdated equipment spending so much that bring it up to par with Verizon's fiber (that's laughable) when it comes down to it they can't compete.

Lets take OptOnline in NY for example:
If OptOnline wants to raise their speeds to compete they have to consider how the increase will affect their network. They mainly have to figure out how to squeeze the last bit of throughput out of those coaxial cables.

Verizon on the other hand has so much room to work. They are not even touching the total capacity.

More importantly with the increase of all this fiber being laid, other companies will start to come around. AT&T and the rest will see a major deficiency (hopefully soon) and start the same thing.

I predict a massive reduction in the cost of bandwidth in the next few years. Ten years down the road and Fiber will be everywhere. That will be a good day

pricewatch

@verizon.net

watch for lower prices ahead.

What's to keep customers happy? 20/5 is nice, but they better start crackin' on the Long Island deployments. Nassau and Suffolk are no where near 100% saturation yet, and less than 25% have franchise rights.

The problem

The problem on Long Island is that verizon doesnt want to make money lol. Many people would switch but verizon has been dragging lol. I thought NY is verizons home state . Wouldnt you htink we would get deployed quick ?

30Mbps Up 5Mbps Down for %55/month? Love It!

But this is just fantasy, because I live in BumkinSouth land, which will be swallowed up soon by the New Deathstar for thei Project Limpspeed. Costs more, does less. What else would you expect from Darth Whitacre & Company?
