60 more employees to be trimmed...
(old news - 12:30PM Friday Sep 26 2008)

Tipped by fatmanskinny See Profile
In what's not particularly surprising news, Earthlink today stated that the struggling internet service provider will be cutting more jobs. After cutting 900 jobs last year, the ISP has informed "less than 60" employees they'll be terminated sometime in the next four months. The company lost $80 million on Muni-Fi last year, their investments in broadband over powerline (BPL) have gone nowhere, the government says they can't share access to next-generation broadband networks, and their effort to run an MVNO (Helio) flamed out spectacularly. Their CEO's survival strategy? Try to focus on long term customers and re-focus the ISPs efforts on dial-up connectivity.

With this economic financial mess.......

All CEOs are trying to figure out survival strageties.
I'm shocked the number wasn't higher

You think...

They should at least try and have a fire sale, dump all the dial-up business and invest what little is left into a sustainable business?

Like buying up failing banks? It is working out well for Warren Buffett.

Warren Buffett is my hero.
All these people who play the markets daily just got skull-f***ed and Warren Buffet, who they laughed at for his long-term investments is snatching up all the free money.

Re: You think...

Boy I agree with that. They should eliminate day trading. I think there should be some minimum time period during which you must hold shares.

The whole stock market is the idea of raising what is essentially free capital. Folks buy a piece of the company in exchange for what? There's no guarantee you'll make a profit and there is no guarantee that the company will survive. For that risk, the rewards can be high if the company grows and makes a lot of money. But where did this idea of "day trading" come about? I don't see this as much different than playing the odds on a football game. In most places it's illegal. Why is it legalized by the stock market? How is it different?

The real crime is the genius behind 401K. We're incented to pay into this game and people get to gamble with our money.

The system needs a few new rules so the players don't hurt themselves. I'm a capitalist but it seems that we removed too many rules and a lot of folks are trying to cheat their way to the top.

They have people left to let go?

I remember back in March of 2004 when they laid off a ton of people, including myself. Glad to see the place sinking like a titanic.

Enjoy investing into a dead technology. I'm sure that'll get you somewhere. Pay off all the small ISP's who are losing money, give them a return on their investment and just take all the failure of the dead technology and die as one single entity.

Re: They have people left to let go?

Archivis, I was lucky to get out of Earthlink on my own terms(I walked out before my shift started one sunday morning and never came back). I agree with you that the place is sinking like a titanic, but I think it was on its way down when Earthlink took over Mindspring.
As to the topic, I am shocked to hear that Earthlink still had employees working for them. Last I heard, they just about outsourced everything, from their NOC, sales, you named it they outsourced anything and everything they could all in the effort to try to "save money". In the end, it cost them customers and a whole lot more then what they expected. I remember when we had a floor meeting and they announced they were going to start outsourcing dial up tech support, a lot of us techs told the VP at the time that it was a bad idea and told him horror stories about the outsourced techs. All we got told was to shut up and not talk about it.

Re: They have people left to let go?

First of all, wanting to improve you're dial up service as a result of failed broadband tactics...is certainly a step in the wrong direction (AOL/Time Warner). Where they messed up as an ISP, they didn't strike any deals with major telecom or cable providers that provide broadband.. now they're stuck with their dial up and have no money to advance other technologies.

LOL, FAIL.

Wow. Are they seriously trying to refocus on dial-up? Dial up should been dead along time ago. Every one would rather have a high speed connection then a dial up connection. Also, I bet alot of people can beat there prices for dial up. Im only paying $9.99 with juno. I just use it so I can dial w/out all those programs they have that dials for you that takes up the little bandwidth you got. If DSL or cable was available, I would drop juno in a second. I think the forecast for earthlink is an extreme chance of FAIL.

I would believe this, except my brother and his wife won't drop Earthlink dial-up and get broadband, even tho he lives in downtown Boise. He can even upgrade to Earthlink DSL, and he won't change. They make plenty of money, he's just afraid he will spend more time on his MAC than he already does.

While I agree with you, I believe there was an article that said that there was like 62% of dialup users have no plans on switching. I would have to also agree that they will probably have to lower their price down to the $9.95 mark unless they offer other services that they know people will be willing to pay the extra $10 a month for.

I'd be willing to wager a good portion of those users are elderly as well, and wouldn't know any better, or even care to get faster internet. See: Slowskis.

IT also has to do with a good number of people who truly do not have any other choices other than dialup.

The old adage "why fix something that ain't broke" may come into play. Ther are alot of people that flat out don't know what they're missing. Theres also a significant number of people that are just out of reach for broadband. So they just keep it simple.

Bill and Evelyn Slowsky would beg to differ.

Maybe they just use it for email and small pics. For me, I would be on youtube, xbox live, online games, downloading music, etc.

What's that? Is it kinda like those black disc's the aliens left?

el csr is a joke

Earthlink customer services is a joke. There is none. They are absolute useless. They once locked up my email account, and I took me a week, about 10 hours with them to get it unlock. Best they can do is point you to the cable provider, in my case, it's TWC.

Earthlink is out of touch...

I called Earthlink about their cable Internet. They were offering service at a GREAT price (6000 for 30 dollars a month), unrestricted newsgroups, etc....I was ready to go, until they told me the upload-384 kbps!

6000/384 Internet. Can you believe it? You figure they'd have 768 kbps or at least 512, but 384?? That was two year old upload speeds!

I walked.

I'm sorry, but a 16:1 D/U assymetry is too much. Network engineers don't recommend more then a 10:1 assymetry.

They need to come into the present.

For $30? Not bad. I am paying $50 for 5Mbps/512Kbps. I don't mind getting 384Kbps upload for $20 less.

It is nice to see there is/was some left

Charles sold Mindspring at just the right time to a company that was more concerned about squeezing out money through corporate mentally vs lowering cost through customer relations.

Nice to see some familiar names...
