More T-Mobile Dream Details
Free biz gmail, screenshots, etc...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 23-Sep-2008 tags: business · wireless · T-Mobile US
With T-Mobile's launch of the Android-equipped HTC G1 (aka Dream) looming, bits of information are starting to leak out ahead of the company's press event later today. Plenty of screenshots have surfaced, as has data on where precisely the phone will be sold (obviously marketing efforts are geared primarily at those 21 markets they've promised to have 3G-ready by mid-October). It also appears that business grade-GMail will be free on the Dream. Still no word on T-Mobile's new wireless data plans, but they should be revealed soon enough.

Business Gmail?

I would not be too keen on having my business emails scanned by Google.
I guess I am just a bit leery of Google right now. They ARE an advertising firm.

I hope they don't expect tons of sales the first week

I don't hear the same level of excitement that I heard for the iPhone. It's not going to be something that people are lining up for. If it's a great product, it will catch on like Blackberry did.

I should mention that I use T-Mobile and have a crappy phone, so I'll probably get this if the reviews are good.

Still want to see the data plans.

Still want to see what the monthly cost will be before I jump ship.

From HTC press release:
The device will be available at select T-Mobile retail stores and online in the U.S. beginning Oct. 22, for a price of $179 with a two-year voice and data agreement.
From that I assume that the std T-Mobile fees will apply to whatever T-Mobile is now charging for 2 yr voice/data plans.

Cheapest 2 yr voice plan is 300 minutes; unlimited weekends for $30/mo. »www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/cell···al-Basic

The G1 data plans are as follows:
What types of plans are available for the T-Mobile G1?
Once you’ve selected a specific T-Mobile voice plan, you must also choose a data plan in order for your G1™ to work. You can choose from a data plan that offers 400 messages and unlimited data access for $25 a month—or add unlimited messaging for just $10 more a month.
So, combined, it looks like cheapest is $55 & $65/mo, depending on which data plan you chose. Of course, you would have to add on all the usual fees, taxes, USF, etc that add about $15 more to the bottom line.

Currently a T-mobile user

I currently use a blackberry on T-mobile and could definitely see switching to this.

The only thing I really don't like about the iPhone is the lack of a true keyboard, a problem which this "Dream" phone seems to rectify.

Assuming the total plan cost is comparable to my blackberry, I will likely be one of the first in line to jump ship.

Likewise. I dislike touch screen phones. The option to have physical buttons is nice. Something about being able to push a button and have that 'click' seems much more natural. When a data plan fits my needs, I will get a BB, or possibly a Dream if it ever comes over to Verizon.

I still think a lack of Exchange sync is a deal breaker for most users.

Opening Screen

That first screenshot - of what I assume is the home screen - looks like a 5 year old's mashup of Google Gadgets and the bottom half looks like it was pulled off a early 90's electronic gadget. Yuck. Awful.

introducing the G1

I just logged into my t-mobile account and guess what? There's a link to the new G1, otherwise known as the Google phone. It comes in black or brown (uh oh, shades of Zune anyone?). Physically not the most beautiful phone I've ever seen and it won't make iPhone lovers envious, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Re: introducing the G1

HTC has made better looking phones in the past, I wonder why they chose this odd design for the G1.

It also comes in White, but that won't be available until October 22nd.

Brown is nothing new for T-mobile. They've always had that color for phones (Shadow, Sidekick).
