Morpheus Not 'Napster On Steroids'
...claims Streamcast CEO
by bskuared Tuesday 05-Feb-2002
At the Digital Media Summit conference, Streamcast CEO Steve Griffin tried valiantly to gain some wiggle room in the face of looming litigation, attempting to put distance between his product and Napster: "Morpheus is not Napster II," he said. "Nor is it Napster on steroids. StreamCast does not know what people are sharing...." Griffin went on to explain users could be exchanging "chili recipes", indicating that the company is still placing all its bets on the BetaMax Defense. More info can be found at Newsbytes.

Chilli Recipies??

Oh yea, I get all my gourmet cooking ideas from Morpheus. In fact, all the cooking sites I go to recommend getting Morpheus so that we can all share our gastronomical expertise with one another.........Please.

I think most of us know that P2P is never going away. The problem now is how do the companies that make the clients devise a defense that that will hold more substance than a soup sandwich.

Don't laugh but....

I actually have found useful "Documents" on Morpheus! Found a really good recipe for salsa! Can you say "Ring-o-Fire"?

Yea, I found all kinds of non infringing stuff to download. I got templates to make Fake Drivers Licence, I got doc's on hacking cable TV and Direct TV, I got a guide to lock picking, a recipe for making GHB, howto doc for makeing gun silencers, and even a doc for making 9 different blends of nitro glicerin. Oh, did I mention spud guns? I tell you, all this focus on movies and mp3's is just lame of those RIAA bastards. There's so much more going on here than just movies and mp3s. It should definitely qualify as betamax excempt.

The Gun Defence

They should employ the Gun defence as well.

To date there have been several trials on wether Gun companies should be held liable for what Gun owners do. I think the precedence has been set and Gun companies are NOT liable. Just as morpheus is not liable.

I personally do not pirate music or anything(though I do have that 1 song which is out of print). But I would not use the service for illegal activity. Just dialing into my home computer to get music to listen too at work.

Damned court systems

I use morpheus regularly for downloading totally legal media (mainly fan licensed anime) but legal multimedia uses don't seem to be enough (even though it was enough for vhs and beta) and that's the problem. There's no decent way to filter content on a system like morpheus, and much like vcr's some usage will be for pirating. However, to say that the service has no legal usage is absurd. I don't buy cd's now-a-days because no decent music is being released, not because I've got some napster addiction, RIAA. =(

How about we put the WestLaw archive into Morpheus

Seems to me that putting copies of every legal filing ever made into P2P would help these lawyers come up with some better ideas.

And, it'd throw the copyright holders over at WestLaw into a tizzy. That'd put a smile on a few faces.

Betamax defense worthless

If the Betamax case were to be argued today, it'd probably be decided the other way. I don't think stare decisis will be sufficient to extend the decision to digital media; the courts will point to the DMCA as clear evidence that the legislature didn't mean to extend those principles digitally, then claim that judicial restraint requires them to blow Morpheus (et al) away.

(the bags with the '$' on them exchanging hands will have nothing to do with it)

how many times

how many times have you gone to your local music store and not been able to find want? How much is your time, gas, etc. worth. If these RIAA idiots can't do there marketing and distribution correctly, why should I suffer?

This will be interesting

I think P2P will be around for a long time. I like the fact that I can d/l live cuts that will never be produced from bands that *encourage* tape trading. I would never d/l and entire album that I could purchase because I have respect for the artist and their time put into making his/her music. Heck, if I was starting a band, its the first place I'd put my music to create public awareness.

P2P certainly has a ton of great uses but the RIAA thinks it infringing on its monies that come in from selling records. I have no proof in front of me to back it up, but I believe that I read somewhere that album sales were greater last year than the year before. Regardless of the outcome, ultimately its the public that decides what it will or won't buy and what it will or won't tolerate. The public doesn't want to be indiscriminately accused of stealing music and that's what the RIAA is doing.

How can the music industry still be arguing? ok fast forward (>>)about 5 years from now....... Ok is the supreme court of the United States of America still debating??? you cant put a price on a sound or a sight... are we to pay for the sounds of birds chirping? the laughter of a baby?.. if I desire to watch a sky-diving accident in 640x480 divx quality, should I have to pay? or spend hour searching the polluted internet for my goal? the answer?

NO! in Fact HELL NO

If I film myself and my girlfriend passionatly dancing on Santas lap, I should at least be able to share this experience with all the other children... Morpheus advertised to place News and events into our shared file lists..... well then its freedom of the press.. If I have a news story that people have the right to hear, see, read, or otherwise view. Then it is written in the Constitution, and is the LAW.. to keep morpheus and all other File(not just music)sharing programs open and available to the public.
