Motorola Still King of the Cable Modem
Though the company plans to leave the handset business...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 30-Jan-2008 tags: business · hardware · stats
From July to September last year, cable hardware vendors shipped 8.2 million Docsis cable modems, embedded multimedia terminal adapters (E-MTAs), and integrated gateways -- a 10.5 percent jump from a year earlier. While the newswires are full with reports that Motorola will be quitting the handset business, their broadband business is booming. According to Cable Digital News, Motorola continues to rule the cable modem roost. The company shipped 1.9 million data-only modems, up 28.5 percent from the prior year, giving them a 43.4 percent market share.

I hope they do quit the handset market. Yes, they have amazing design which consistently changes the form factor in cell phones (StarTac, RAZR), but they can't make a quality working product to save their lives.

Motorola phones suck huge. I wouldn't mind if they continued to design phones, as long as somebody else made them. The failure rate on Motorola is ridiculous.

Motorolas I wish I had never sold:

V120
C333
Q
RAZR
KRZR

Re: razr

The Motorola handset business has too problems. Firstly, they are revolutionary rather than consistently evolutionary. They do indeed come out with amazing new styles from time to time, but then they milk them way past their shelf life, whilst the likes of Nokia keep rolling out incremental, but market catching, changes. The second problem, as you say, is quality. Poor quality kills a company at every level without fail - period.

Are you serious ?

Manufacturing is the issue not the mobile designers.

One point in case , the Moto E815 , a rock solid handset made in central China , the same same plant that made the pebl (which I own 2 of as well as the e815 and wish verizon would carry). These phones are rock solid performers and the failure rates were below 1% which is really a feat all in itself.

Most motos are made in coastal china with cheaper parts and cheaper labor. That is the real issue. The same issue plaguing other makers except LG who makes it all in Korea.

The failure rate of even the iphone is up near 9 % but they have very tight quality control and they barely ever leave the factory.

Also take a look at who was the chipset owner in most cases. Those phones that bombed constantly were almost all GSM and almost all coastal china assembles , where the pay is horribly low and they don't care about quality just quantity.

Moto makes some damn fine phones. The UI needs some work , but the hardware is some of the best and toughest you can find. Look at the Nextel lines. All moto and some of these absolute toughest phones I have ever seen.

Re: razr

Love my E815, awesome reception, tolerates many falls, and keys haven't snapped yet. Although its sad the power connector doesn't have a bridge rectifier (playing around with broken charger tip), had to buy a new phone.

Don't get me wrong, Moto does make some damn fine phones. When they work, they are easily the best phones on the market. The problem is, they have a very high failure rate, and every model has a consistent issue with that one particular model. Voice quality and feature set is hardly ever the issue, its other junk. Screens on the RAZR series go blank a lot. They also crack more easily than other thin phones. Battery charging has always been an issue with Moto's. Their older proprietary charging port on phones like the e815 was junk, and would stop working period. The new usb design is good, but batteries aren't holding a charge as well anymore.

And I just have to mention one of my Moto pet peeves; arrogance. They try to move certain proprietary stuff on their handsets in the vain belief they're better than everybody else. Up until recently, Motorola was the only manufacturer who put the send key on the right and end on the left, completely opposite of every other phone on the market. Drove me nuts.

I could go on and on, but like I said, if they wanted to stick to designing phones, I'd be okay with that.

Re: razr

I would tend to agree... I've had Moto gear back when the menus were cr@p, but the phones were built well:

Moto Star Tac/Micro Tac (AMPS/CDMA)
Moto Timeport P7382i (GSM 1900) build in Germany!
I still use my Moto V505, and I do like the V3xx
House phone: cordless Moto

Positives:
Design has improved
Audio quality is good
Standardized USB charger (why can't all phones use this!)
Phones are great for Modding

Negatives:
Overall physical durability/reliability has gone down
Can be paired with a bad network (AT&T GSM) to make you think the phones are bad.

I personally disliked the 'accidental' ringer change settings on the side... too many missed calls.

I hate to see them go. While I agree that their quality has been consistently crappy, their push for the next best thing/ coolest new design has helped push the OTHER companies to make better products.

Shaner's post was dead on, where would we be without Motorola pushing the field? Talking on field radio sized bar phones, thats where.

I've used Motorola phones for about 5 years now, with no issues ever. Dropped, thrown, sat on, they still worked. They make very durable stuff.

As for their cable modems, my trusty sb5100 is nearing 4 years of constant use and it still runs like a champ. I would never use a modem that wasn't a Motorola.

I take it you don't own a razr or any of their v-series phones...

Good riddance to Moto in the cell phone sector.

Re: razr

I have a 1st gen razr and also a v323i. Both still work and are excellent phones. The razr survived an accidental drop from a second story motel balcony-only minor scratches. So, they are durable.

Re: razr

I've got a Razr V3m that is 2 years old and still going strong (with a fresh new battery). My only complaint is the buttons are too small for my fat thumbs.

I don't have any plans right now to upgrade. The Razr A10 or 9 or whatever it is, is neat. But only because it has bigger buttons.

The RAZR design also begat some clunkers (the W385 blows because of some features it lacks that the RAZR has, and it commits the additional sin of costing more); however, the RAZR and W385 are both solidly constructed (both the models I am referring to are VZW CDMA models). The very reason the RAZR is still around is because it's still in demand (not to mention that it still holds up to heavy use (I'm also glad that VZW *didn't* carry the ROKR; instead, it opted for the KRZR K1c and K1c Fire, CDMA variations of the K1 and K1 Fire that are wildly popular with the GSM crowd). I have the SB-5120 cable modem (which replaced my SB-4100 due to tier upgrades; I purchased the -5120 like the 4100 it replaced) and it's heading into its third year of use (the 4100 lasted four years). Reliability, thy name is Motorola.

I sure hope that's not true. I love my Moto. The call quality is superb and they are super easy to mod.

I don't have a Motorola cable modem though. Comcast supplied me with an RCA modem.

Aw man!

So my Razr2 might be my last Moto handset? That's unfortunate. I always found Motos to have the best call quality of any handset out there.

I always did wish they would diversify their lineup, though; not very much variety.

Ironically though, I don't have a Motorola cable modem...mine is a Scientific Atlanta.

The same I have found. I have 2 voyagers from LG now and the call quality is horrible compared to the e815 and e315 that I had. Im actually thinking of selling my voyagers and finding new e315's on ebay.

moto's have great reception as well.

Ditto on the reception. I'm in a fringe area, but I never drop calls on a Moto handset. I had an E815 previously as well and loved it. In fact, my wife loved hers so much that when I renewed our contract, she kept it...

iden

So if this is True who would make iden handset cell phones for Nextel? All I ever see they have are Motorola's.

Re: iden

I think by the time they actually stop making phones you won't be able to get a strictly iDEN phone anyway. Have you noticed how Nextel used to have new phones out pretty regularly? Now they they are a part of Sprint I have seen two or three new phones that operate solely on the iDEN network. On the Sprint side of the house (I just switched to there from Nextel) I could have gotten a phone that was a hybrid using Sprint's cell network and Nextel's iDEN radio network. I didn't use the radio much anymore so I opted for the Q instead (and I wanted something running Windows). I had various problems with it but was able to "replace" the Q with the Q9c within the 30-day period and have been pretty happy since. I don't know if the hybrid phones would fully failover to Nextel's network in the event you had Nextel service and not Sprint service though.

Average americans are too poor, and too much competition from China to sell them anything. Real money is in B2B, since business fee, tax, and charge their customers, deliver shit, and pay their employees shit, so they keep all the money in the economy.

In terms of revenue maybe, but what's the point of taking in loads of money if you still operate at a loss. The enterprise side (police radios etc.) is a very steady, albeit rather boring, cash-cow.

nothing new in years

There has been no real innovation in the handset division for years! The iphone was evidence that handset makers were not innovating and stagnating. Also, nothing new for their biggest supporter, Sprint.. all their high end phones were overpriced for years which hurt them in the market. I would have bought an upgraded Sprint phone, but the prices are too steep given the other products in the marketplace which didn't fully meet my needs either (missing at least ONE feature that kills the deal)

Not everybody likes Motorola

The Hauppage WinTV-HVR1600 doesn't support the Motorola QIP2500 which is only the main STB for FIOS. I guess FIOS is such an unheralded, shocking new developement it's not worth keeping up with.

Does it support the DCT2500? If so, then it most likely will work with the QIP2500 too.

Misleading numbers?

I think that 8.2 m includes many many many cable boxes with DOCSIS and an Ethernet port (hence the e-MTA ref) which will just sit and sit in people's homes and never be used. The MSOs IMO are ass-backwards.

I had a Phase III DCT box and it has a DOCSIS modem and Ethernet port. It has a DOCSIS MAC address. Can I just activate it and start paying comcast $50/month for their HSI? HELL NO.

Wow E815 Users unite

My goodness...there still a bunch of E815 users out there My E815 is starting to have problems cause the antenna came off the phone. The fact is that there is problems charging the phone. My Brother in law also got an e815 and it was an awsome phone, Verizon needed to stick with it longer. But charging on an E815 is a pain. My Contract is up soon, and im looking at getting a Samsung Flipshot.

Motorola is going to have a hard time competing with LG , Samsung and Nokia is really trying to get into the market.
Motorola stock as drop and dropped lately, and while EMTA 's are good. Motorola just lost a lot of creative edge I have these wonderful cordless home phones that they make 5.8 GHZ phones, but it never really took off. Nothing is in the pipeline for Motorola in 2008.

Miss my E815

That was the best phone I have ever owned. I literally cried when it died on me, just wouldnt charge anymore. The port died. Other than that I never had a problem, it really was a tank. But Verizon gave me a razr for free as they were no longer giving out the e815, a real shame. I would have kept that phone for VERY long.
