Motorola, Verizon Plan Android Tablet For FiOSTV
10 inch screen, will operate as a mobile hotspot...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 04-Aug-2010 tags: Video · business · wireless · cable
According to the Financial Times, Motorola is working on an Android-based tablet that will be tied closely to Verizon's FiOSTV service. According to the Times' sources, the device will have a ten-inch screen, and will be able to operate as a mobile hotspot. Motorola, who also builds set top box units for Verizon, hopes that by working closely with a TV provider they "will not be seen as upsetting the lucrative business of pay TV" (we certainly wouldn't want that) says the Times. Apple of course has quickly come to dominate the tablet market, though their TV ambitions have yet to fully materialize.

Looks interesting

Of course, it begs to ask, why not get the other tablet PCs? You know, the ones that run Windows XP Tablet edition. From 2003.

Because they were overpriced even when new, and had really awful hardware that could barely handle the 'experience'.

I'd hate to think of what it would be to try to get one of those seven-year-old tablet pc's to do anything relevant now.

back burner plz

I'd prefer to see DVR's with larger hard drives and/or external storage support and IPTV implemented first before this. Those are my two gripes with the TV side. I love me FiOS interwebs.

sounds like a fancy remote control. What's the advantage of it also being a wifi hotspot? Is it going to run on 3G to access CPE ??

Sounds promising

Doubt the content owners woul all be on board yet... but could be cool if they let their dvrs act as slingboxes with a LTE/3g 10 inch tablet. Through in video out, and you basically have a portable stb that you can take anywhere. Of course slingbox/android phone pretty much does the same already, but it would still be a pretty cool device.

Interesting

Interesting if you are into watching TV on a tablet. So its obvious this device was created to directly compete with the iPad (with flash and two cameras, which the iPad lacks), but many buyers of the iPad just get it because they have iPhones, are used to the iOS and apps.

Personally, I think tablets are a niche market that Apple has basically cornered. Will people buy this tablet? Absolutely. Will it move 3-4M units in the first few months (or ever)? Probably not...

Re: Interesting

Agreed, I don't really believe there's much of a "tablet market" to begin with.

I wouldn't be so sure on that. Apple has brought new awareness to this market. Other companies would be foolish to ignore this potential cash flow.

Re: Interesting

I think Apple pretty much brought its own market to this space. I doubt that anyone else has the power to do that.

never again

i spent $250 for their "revolutionary" verizon hub, only for them to discontinue it a few months later. well, this sounds like verizon hub part deux. never again.

Re: never again

It's first and formost a 3G android pad, I'm sure any integration will just be some android apps

I don't think anyone will be buying at purely for this integration but as a nice android pad with some extra apps

I myself am very interested in the upcoming android pads, the ipad is too restrictive for a laptop estc device for me, even though I love my iphone I don't want an ipad
