Motorola to Cut Another 800 Jobs
Will Take $31 Million Layoff-Related Hit
by Karl Bode Monday 31-Oct-2011 tags: business · wireless · wireless
Motorola has disclosed in a regulatory filing that the company will be laying off an additional 800 employees. The company, which is in the process of being acquired by Google, will have to pay $27 million in severance and an additional $4 million for facility closures related to the pending layoffs. "“Motorola Mobility continues to focus on improving its financial performance by taking actions to manage the company’s costs," says a company spokesperson.

That severance cost writeoff isn't usually just money to employees. It may include money for terminated employee health costs during transition; job retraining seminars; outplacement services; office space for employees looking for new jobs; costs of Motorola employees managing the severance & outplacement; etc.

That's not much. About half a years salary. But better then nothing.

Yes, and a $10 million bonus to the board members for "cutting costs".

800 jobs out of 19,000 employees not so bad

With 19,000 workers, Motorola Mobility’s work force

800 out of 19,000 is not so bad. But I expect this won't be the last cuts made at Motorola Mobility. Google bought them for their patents and not for their phone manufacturing or marketing or sales. I wouldn't be surprised if Google tries to spin off the hardware activities later on.

Google hasn't bought them yet though. And Google can legally have no control, as a separate public company, over what Motorola does as a company.

Laying off an additional 800 employees ???

quote:
the company will be laying off an additional 800 employees.

When did they layoff or announce layoffs for OTHER THAN these 800? I didn't see it.

Re: Laying off an additional 800 employees ???

Motorola has been laying people off for years without announcing it. Then they would rehire a few at a lower pay. Then lay them off again. These days there is no more loyalty one way or the other -- keep that in mind when negotiating for that new fancy job.

I know you and many people might hate this answer, but it's just business. The only thing I would at least want is a heads up of a layoff so I can actively search for another job. I would also like to sit down with a manager and see if my pay can be negotiated. I rather get paid less then not getting paid at all.

It's not ethical business. In European countries there are labor laws that prevent this sort of practice.

From what I've heard, the call center in Springfield, MO is already on the chopping block.

So, AT&T, no lost jobs? Really?

Once great Motorola

Oh how the mighty can fall as once there was a time when Motorola could do no wrong and now if it wasn't for their patents I think they would be folding up shop entirely.

Approved on the 24th, I know someone who got notified he was laid off on the 25th... they sure didn't waste any time.

Another case of...

Bunged updates

If Motorola didn't cancel the update for the CliqXT, I would still be a user of Motorola products. They did themselves in when they screwed over the many customers that were PROMISED an update for their CliqXTs from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1.

Not to mention many of the other hardware/software problems MMI has suffered through over the last several years.

Which Motorola is laying off - Mobility or Solutions?

Your article is vague. Which Motorola is laying off employees? Is it Mobility or Solutions? Only ONE Motorola is being acquired by Google as far as I know. It is confusing though because Motorola modems (that is what I care about as far as Motorola brand goes) are listed at both Mobility and Solutions websites. So, if Google acquires Mobility what happens to the modems since they are shown under both entities? Or is Google buying BOTH Mobility and Solutions?

Are you looking at the same article? This is the one Karl posted a link to: »www.businessweek.com/technology/···011.html

It's not vague who is laying off employees, nor is it vague that Google is buying Motorola Mobility.

Motorola Mobility does include cable products unit which makes the modem and CMTS equipment. Motorola Solutions makes the 2-way radio equipment.

Re: Which Motorola is laying off - Mobility or Solutions?

I didn't notice the link. I was referring to what Karl said in his "article". That is the "article" I was referring to. He has a bad habit of too many links and not enough information in his original article. I get tired of having to click to his links to get basic information that should have been in his article.

I am even more confused if Mobility has the cable products unit. How come I can access the cable products (including all the modems) from Solutions website where the modems are promoted to cable companies (as well as CMTS equipment) if the unit is in Mobility?

It looks to me like Mobility has cable modems for CONSUMER purchase and Solutions has the same cable modems for ISP purchases. So, does Motorola retain control of the modems or does Google get that and does one or the other get the modems for both consumers and ISPs? In other words, will Motorola as Solutions continue to develop and market cable modems? If not, Google is gonna kill that probably so what happens to all the ISPs who have Motorola modems in the field? They end up with the short end of the stick like with Toshiba modems?

I've been extremely loyal to Surfboard modems and won't use anything else. But the one I have is not IPv6 aware, nor is it DOCSIS 3 capable, and is no longer supported by Motorola so if I were to get a newer Motorola modem, or Oceanic were to provide one (if I could afford wideband), is that going to be Motorola Solutions retaining control or god forbid ...Google!?

Re: Which Motorola is laying off - Mobility or Solutions?

You're confusing yourself.

MMI (Mobility) has set top boxes (the previous General Instruments in Horsham, PA), modems (Arlington Heights, IL) and handsets (Libertyville, IL).

MSI (Solutions) is the old CGISS business mostly (Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector). They have everything else that MMI isn't keeping. They are in Schaumburg, IL

What Google decides to do with the hardware business only Google knows. I'd imagine a spin-off is not out of the question.

Solutions will not support your modem.

Can you post a link to Motorola Solutions website listing cable products like modems and CMTSs? I can't find any:

All the normal cable equipment is here on the Mobility website:

Yep. And that is what was confusing me. For the ISP it is on the Video Solutions tab which, because of the name, I was confusing with Motorola Solutions.

Maybe it is just as well that my SB 5100 is old and non IPv6 aware as I don't think I want a modem from a company owned by Google.
