Multipath Router Will Bond Multiple Broadband Connections
by Karl Bode 09:45AM Friday Oct 04 2013
An Irish startup by the name of Multipath Networks is crowdfunding a new router they claim can combine up to four broadband connections to create a faster and more reliable broadband experience for customers. According to the company's ongoing IndieGogo funding effort, Multipath Networks and creator Justin Collery is hoping to get $30,000 in funding by the end of October in order to fund production of the unit.

According to Multipath, they hope the device will retail for around $200, though users will also need to pony up $5 a month to pay for the cloud services that help power the unit.

For that money, you'll get a device that can bond your sluggish DSL line and your mobile LTE connection (up to four connections are supported), creating a more reliable and faster line.

The idea certainly isn't new, though this implementation does WAN aggregation and appears to be a step up from most comparable efforts. Still, most users with speedy, uncapped connections probably won't see the benefit. Multipath hopes that they'll be able to see decent adoption among those struggling with a variety of more sluggish or capped connectivity options.

"The router sends traffic down each interface to our array of aggregating servers," notes the company. "These then put the packets back in the right order and send them on their way. The net result is that data, even a single stream, is sent across all your links -- the combined links appear to connected devices as a single, fast, reliable internet connection, with the speed of all links combined."

The underlying software powering the technology is Multipath TCP, which is already being used by Apple to fuse 4G and Wi-Fi networks to power Siri. The company aims to have testing completed and hopes to begin preparations for shipping by January of next year. All donors will get some version of the company's technology, even if they're not willing to shell out the full amount for the hardware.

"At the lower levels, people will receive the software on a small flash dish which they can then use on hardware they can purchase separately. At the higher levels we will ship a full kit which people can use straight away. As well as getting our software, pledgers will also receive at least 3 months free access to our aggregating service."
