FCC approves takeover of DirecTV
(old news - 04:45AM Saturday Dec 20 2003)
The anticipated FCC approval for NewsCorp's acquisition of DirecTV is finally a reality, reports Reuters. Despite the concerns of consumer groups such as Consumer's Union, and the fears of the cable industry, Federal Communications Commission and antitrust enforcers approved the $6.78 billion plan. The deal was brokered with conditions designed to allay the fears of opponents that News Corp. would strike unfair deals with many of the channels owned by the media giant.

There goes the neighborhood!

This turn of events makes me even more glad I chose Dish Network over DirecTV all those years ago...

Re: There goes the neighborhood!

well,I also prefer DN because their program menu is better than DT,in the DT remote you search for channels pressing the up arrow and the list go down, stupid, also the DN system respond is faster than DT,I mean when you are checking every single channel.
I know.,those negatives comment about DT are very easy to get use to,but I don't understand why they design a remote control, which is so obvious to press up and the channel list should go from channel 1 and up,but is not.

Re: There goes the neighborhood!

lol

This is true. I get caught everytime I want to go up one music channel. I do have a question for you since you have DISH. Do they have a same canned music that is looped? I dislike hearing the same songs over and over till they put in a new loop.

I should of asked Santa for a 6 CD changer.

I fully agree about the DTV remote being upside down!
However I find DN response time to be horrible compared to DTV. DTV tunes a channel almost as fast as analog cable while my DN takes several seconds before video is available.
This is not true with the very old DTV receivers from several years ago. They were really slow but the ones DTV sells now are very fast. I did just dump DTV for DN and was very disappointed by how slow the DN receiver responds. Other than this I'm very happy with DN.

Anticipated????

Anticipate is an interesting word.
quote:
an·tic·i·pate v. an·tic·i·pat·ed, an·tic·i·pat·ing, an·tic·i·pates v. tr.

1. To feel or realize beforehand; foresee: hadn't anticipated the crowds at the zoo.
2. To look forward to, especially with pleasure; expect: anticipated a pleasant hike in the country.
3. To deal with beforehand; act so as to mitigate, nullify, or prevent: anticipated the storm by boarding up the windows.
4. To cause to happen in advance; accelerate.
5. To use in advance, as income not yet available.
6. To pay (a debt) before it is due.
It will not be something to look forward to with joy or expected happiness for the customers. This will certainly mitigate, nullify or prevent competition.

I convinced my husband to go with DirecTV eight years ago. He has been very happy. We did not have local channels but one before we went satellite. We had shut off the cable four year prior despite losing all of his news and sports due to raising costs two and three times a year.

It looks like we will head back to that again.

Wonder if antennas have improved since I was a kid.

Why start planning to head back before the ink is even dry on the deal? Nothing has changed yet, and you don't know if anything negative will happen. I have heard some of the positive things News Corp. is planning for DirecTV, and they really make me want to stay on as a customer.

Re: Me to

well,here is the true:

I used DN for a while,I liked a lot,but if I wanted to watched other programs in other room,,,the first reaction is: heeyyyyy,I'm watching that, puted back!!!! and this is a seriuos situation, because they are watching SpongeBOB,je je!! I'm seriuos,if I have to choose just 1 cartoon that my kids can watch,I would said"spongeBOB" I love the part when spongeBOB is on stage singing some kinda rock music,is very funny.
Anyway, now I have cable, just analog, the picture is just fine not complaint about,I don't have menu to check for programs, but I don't care,we don't watch too much TV anyyway.
The thing that I like most is: "WE CAN WATCH 4 DIFFERENT PROGRAMS IN 4 DIFFERENT ROOMS" with DN you need to pay extra,I think is 5.00 extra per receiver, with my cable is "0",and i have like 10.00 discount if I have broadband,so I pay only 45.00 for internet(comcast)
Rigth now I am watching some commercial while typing and the picture is just like DN.
yap,,,I am happy with cable.
No more dishes for me.
I was reading few weeks ago that the cable company has like 70% of subscriber in all the USA,I was very impress that they still are the giant in this aspect.

All the dishes charge extra for an extra receiver whether you OWN the unit outright or rent it. What a RIP OFF!, Digital cable does this too and they even charge for the remote. geez!

While with regular cable you don't have to pay extra for receiver, digital cable is doing this.

It harks back to the old days of cable TV when they claimed it was an extra load on their system. They were lying then, and they are again now. The dish companies are too, but as it seems, no one has yet to call them on their bluff.

Cable companies also charge extra for the stinkin remote!!!

Amazing.

Dr. Frankenstein, I presume ?

As a former DirecTV DSL subscriber, looking with sad, teary, solemn, yet hopeful eyes at the last statement of account status sent to him by DirecTV DSL Broadband Division and, at the top of his lungs shouting with a deafening wicked roar - so loud, it would wake the dead and make them deaf, all while having a classic madly insane Dr. Frankenstein moment during a ferocious night thunder and lightning storm... upon hearing this late breaking news, throws the switch that sends the spark of life through the carefully placed (+) and (-) electrodes that fires up his old DirecTV DSL x2 Telocity issued modem, as he awaits for the signs of life to eminate from the eyes (5 healthy-status green LEDs):

"Live - - Live! - - LIVE! - - - LIVE !! - - L I V E ! ! !. . . YES!. . . YEEESSSS! ! !. . .M U H A H A H A H A H A A A ! !

I'm just glad SBC didn't buy the damned thing. I'd rather the devil himself buy it than them.

I didn't, but I'll take your word for it. This does mean however that DirecTV is a good acquisition for him. When I got DirecTV USSB (remember them!) the picture quality was great. Year after year DirecTV used up more and more of the same limited bandwidth for more channels and other purposes. This means very noticeable compression artifacts, abbreviated instead of full titles and descriptions in the program guide, no descriptions at all when trying to look for programs more then a couple of hours ahead, no program guide at all for the next day (let alone a whole week as it used to be). When I hear people use the words satellite and HDTV in the same sentence I always think that someone is trying to make a really bad joke.

this will be good

They can do the same thing SBC did with DSL. SBC dropped the prices and cable companies respond by upping bandwidth. When DTV drops prices because they will get newscorp channels for free, other networks will be forced to drop prices also. This will be a good thing.

I don't know if it matters at this point but

Personally, I think DTV looks better plus it loads very fast, I can go to the menu and view my channel at the same time. Oh and I can have a small guide, that is transparent, oh and if I press select I have 9 channels that I can have fast access to by choosing it, rather than remembering the channels.

I thought the original plans was the DN would buy DTV and then merge the channel and issue everyone new hardware?

Fcc

I think the FCC should have allowed the EchoStar merger to go through if they really cared about consumers. With that merger the bandwidth per video channel would have increased since we now have two satellite systems broadcasting the same content. Which by the way is the FCC's current philosophy with the cable industry: not deploying more than one cable grid in a neighborhood that broadcasts the same content.
